not to bash on the topic or the bench press (im at 205 at 125 lbs btw) but does having a strong bench really help ya at all in a match? just curious....

Your bench and squat numbers are pretty but you have to admit that wrestling is a sport where a one rep max is almost completely useless. Yes, it is nice to be able to say that one can bench 500 lbs., but the most important strength is muscle endurance. Any engineers out there want to come up with a formula on this one because there is no way that anybody can say who is the strongest wrestler. McCallie always seems to have very strong wrestlers, but I rarely ever see many Father Ryan guys gassing or fatiguing. MBA seems to be very well conditioned and seem to have good muscle edurance. Does any of the Baylor wrestlers lift weights? Just curious because they always seem very slim and not too strong. Forgot about Clarksville. THey are always very, very strong but always seem to be gassin.

Bench press is just an easy number to throw around. I think that the power clean is the best wrestling lift to develop overall body strength and explosiveness. I just read an interesting article in WIN magazine that talked about a research paper that is out concerning the effect of a two day tournament on upper and lower body strength. The article talked about the % decrease per match over a two day tournament and how many wrestlers were at their weakest during the most important matches. It wasn't long enough to go into much detail but was very interesting. Basically.....

Wrestling training should be performed in 40 second effort with 20 second rest. This included lifting and in-season wrestling efforts. This mimics the effort/rest cycle in a college match - review your own team's tapes to find out what is optimal for your team.

I just thought this was interesting.

    • I didn't make it up, I was told that by another coach.   I was just passing along what I was told.  Keep your shirt on there tough guy.
    • I see them and Oakdale struggling quite a bit the next few years. I see OS to be the powerhouse of the area for awhile. It all depends on how much Coalfield can recruit.
    • How did the scrimmage with Central go?
    • I’ve said it all year coalfield isn’t the same team as the last couple years. They have 3 really good players and another pitcher that throws low to mid 80s. Other than that, everybody else is average at best. You could make the argument that their lineup was the worst out of the 4 teams in their region tournament. Oakdale is really hot right now and playing well. Greenback was the second best team there. Wartburg was hitting it well but limped into the tournament with their center fielder being hurt and their best pitcher not being able to go on the mound for them was killer.
    • Upperman White County both will be loaded. Dyersbirg and South Side will be a handful as well. Getting about that time in about 3 weeks we start watching summer scrimmages. Dyersburg loaded loaded loaded with talent. Most talent ever I have seen in their program.
