Rape Charges Dismissed Against UTC Wrestler

posted January 24, 2005

Rape charges were dismissed by motion of the state against UTC wrestler Justin Otis on Monday morning in General Sessions Court.

His attorney, Jerry Summers, said the dismissal came "after a thorough investigation by the district attorney's office and the UTC police."

Attorney Summers said the charges "should never have been brought."

He said the alleged 17-year-old victim had gone with an 18-year-old female friend to a liquor store and used a fake ID to buy vodka. He said the two females then went to the UTC dorm room of Otis and his roommate.

Attorney Summers said the friend of the alleged victim had sex with multiple partners at the dorm room.

He said the alleged victim stated she had one drink, but he said a urine test showed a drunk level of .20.

He said the wrestler had suffered unfavorable publicity here and in his home town, had to make a $50,000 bond, and to pay considerable legal fees.

Justin Otis, a sophomore, was suspended from the wrestling team for five matches, but he has returned for recent matches, attorney Summers said. His wrestling coach was at the court appearance

So, so sad that a girl considers it to be an okay thing to charge rape against someone for her own loose morals. We are talking about a young man's life, HIS LIFE, as opposed to her maybe getting in trouble for drinking and having sex. By the way, would she have even been in trouble of any kind if she hadn't opened her mouth ? This really, really aggravates me! I think for her falsehood she should suffer in some way - payback of attorney's fees, payback of bail money; and maybe even community service such as speaking at school about how/why it is wrong to charge someone falsely with rape!

Amen to that!!!

She should be held accountable for making false charges!!!!

Have her go to jail and spend time with the real rapist and then she would think before she tried to get others in trouble agin.

Is this a trend? A younger brother of one of UTC's basketball players was charged with a similar type of accusation recently. Of course, it was on the front of the sports page in the paper. Funny how after it was investigated and the young man was cleared by the police I never found that article in the paper. Shouldn't there be a moral obligation by the news media to not report these types of claims until it is investigated by the police to determine if there is enough evidence to substantiate the claim?

I agree she should have to pay all of his fees and he should be able to file suit for pain and suffering. I hope the Times Free Press and the University Echo make a point to put this revalation on the front page of the paper. That would be the fair thing to do for this young man.

    • They did a 10 play series deal instead of down and distance. LC scored twice but if it had been an actual game neither would have mattered because they turned over the ball twice with Sweetwater forcing fumbles both times. LC only scored on the 2nd stringers as well. Defense is looking solid and the offense has a good running back and receiver who did not play last year but made several great catches during the scrimmage, I believe the cats had some key pieces missing with baseball and track still being in season at the time. Considering the wildcats were matched up against a 5A school the cats held their own and forced multiple turnovers while also creating scoring opportunities against the LC defense.

I spent 27 years, faithfully in the United States Military. I don’t know if it was because I am Black or an easy target”
    • I don’t see any of them guys why leave programs to go there with no community backing or anything. Word up here on the hill is davy and veto into it over whose kid should be q b for jr high. Tough times in tc hope it all changes with a new face. And once again we aren’t giving up shoulders. And he doesn’t want that crap down there lol
    • They had the toughest bracket last year and no one said a word. You will never make everyone happy. Someone is always complaining.
    • Whoever gets hired I don’t think they will be there long, they’ll get ran out of town because they can’t win a tough region with a pee wee team.
