The Elephant in the Room - the two boarding schools
cbg replied to MoonDogRex's topic in Division II
Since FR is not a boarding school students must move a certain number of miles to be immediately eligible at FR. As the transfer rule currently reads a student that has an established athletic record at another school or schools may transfer to a boarding school, become a boarder and become eligible immediately -
The Elephant in the Room - the two boarding schools
cbg replied to MoonDogRex's topic in Division II
I have absolutely no problem with what The Baylor School and The McCallie School are currently doing with regard to winning in football as they are not breaking any rules. Let’s all remember that for years the boarding schools played in the old Mid-South League which was designed for both the prep schools and military academies that had boarding schools. The schools also offered a post graduate year of eligibility for students. The only change that needs to be made is for the rule to state that if a student becomes a boarding student after they have established an athletic record at another school they will be ineligible for one season. The loophole to this rule that would also have to be closed is for international students because they participate in club sports as schools in other countries do not sponsor athletics. When you have kids transferring to a boarding schools at the beginning of the academic year as sophomore students, junior students or senior students, participate in football and then transfer back to their home school on the Monday after the state championship football game you have a problem. My suggestion to the D2 schools that do not like how the TSSAA is applying the rules for their specific division is to leave the TSSAA. -
It’s MNPS own fault that all but a few select programs are horrible at football. When Davidson County annexed all of the various communities into one government system in the 1960’s they were hiring coaches/teachers that had played college football at places like MTSU, Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech. Today they hire a teacher and then beg them to coach. The day’s of the former high school football coach retiring from coaching to become the principal are long gone. In most instances today you have someone that has never participated in athletics as the principal and they couldn’t care less about athletics. MNPS also has little if any community support due to being a large government agency that does not ask for or wish to have any input from the community leaders. Let’s not forget that it’s the attitude of “WE HAVE ALL OF THE ANSWERS AND DON’T NEED ANY HLEP” that has caused MNPS to be on the bottom when it comes to both athletics and academics.

It’s tarnished in all division if you have less than 75 teams in a division. Look at most of the top football playing states and most have over 100 schools playing in each division and the private and public schools play each other.
-
As of now the teams that Mt Juliet has played are a combined 2-14. The teams that Cookeville has played are a combined 6-10. The cold hard facts are that neither team has played a team with a winning record or for that matter a team that is any good at all. My personal opinion is that this game should be over by the middle of the 3rd quarter and Mt Juliet will be the winning team.

Purely based on numbers the private schools do not need three division or even two divisions for that matter. However, you will never get all of the private schools to agree on less than three division and the TSSAA would have to force the D2 schools to play in two divisions. The public schools truly do not need more than three division but again I don't ever see them agreeing to less than four divisions. When someone wins a state championship in a division with less than 75 teams it is completely tarnished. If the public and private schools were placed back together (this will never happen) they should only have 4 divisions.

Lineup or are they still begging kids to participate

Completely agree with everything that you are saying! I will add that FR also has not had a top flight coach and a group of really great assistant coaches in the past 25 years.
-
When is the last time FR won a state title in soccer? I have absolutely zero confidence in this current administration and board of trust hiring a great wrestling coach when Patrick Simpson retires.
-
Again, place a great priest in charge at Father Ryan and watch the improvement take place immediately.
-
FR is so far behind with the entire athletic program that it would take several years of making the necessary changes to fix all of the issues. Again, the right priest that values Catholic education running the school would be just the beginning in fixing all of the athletic department issues. FR must first get a firm grasp as to whom they are and stop trying to be someone else.

31-2 is horrible. It’’s completely the fault of the administration and the board of trust. They in conjunction with each other allowed this atrocity to take place and all of them should be provided with a pink slip Monday morning. It’s past time to go old school and put the right priest back in charge that values Catholic education and knows what it takes to win.

Just a quick question: Other than Alcoa does Maryville ever play a really tough out of region opponent? Have they ever played one of the top teams from North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia.
-
They may have hired the wrong staff! When it comes to high school hiring practices, I have found that in most instances those that are the decision makers and responsible for hiring the coaches don't have a clue as to what they are doing. The days of a former successful football or basketball becoming the principal and knowing the traits needed to become a successful head coach have long passed us by. Now most principals have a PhD (Pile It Higher and Deeper) and have very little if any experience with what it requires to have a successful and well-rounded athletic program.

TSSAA Changes to Tournament Format for Basketball
cbg replied to YAIMountainTop's topic in Boys Basketball
Several years ago, districts had between 8-10 teams. Of those teams the top 2 would advance to the regional tournament. I see no problem with eliminating the district and combining everyone into a regional. -

Out of curiosity why would Shad not have success at Blackman against Creasy? As long as both schools are allowed to recruit (yes, I said it) all of the kids out of Rutherford County by using the IB Program I would have to assume that Shad would be successful.
-
Strength can be corrected in the weight room and you must recruit size & athleticism. All of those things are coaching problems.
-
It sounds like it’s time for Goodpasture to find a new coaching staff and allow that staff to go out and get some talent. Look at what has happened to BGA when they decided to hire a great coach with proven results against good competition.

That is funny! I would put my money on the one that is jacked up and super strong!

Equal enrollment or not the best teams in Texas are superior to the best teams in Tennessee. In Texas many of the communities with great football programs refuse to build other high schools because they want to win the state championship in the top classification. Unlike most schools in Tennessee that want to avoid moving up in classification. With regards to high school athletics, Tennessee and Texas have a completely different philosophy.

It was two (2) bad D2 teams playing against each other.

If Oakland is getting killed by Anna I can only imagine what would happen if they played Southlake, North Shore, Westlake, Lake Travis, etc…
-
The last poll that I saw did not have them ranked in the Top 25. Having spent a lot of time in Texas (Lake Travis) I can tell you that Anna would get drilled by the top teams in Texas. Yes, they won their division but there is a lot of difference in the division they won and the top division.
