It doesn't matter when people get hurt in a sport. People don't play to get hurt or hurt other people. People play a sport for competition and to win by scoring points. This requires some sort of athletic or generally a strenuous activity to achieve to score points and band doesn't do that. Band requires playing notes and being in sync with one another while playing an instrument. It is a performing art, not a sport. It doesn't require athletic ability, therefore it's not a sport, because athletes play sports. Band requires musical talent and practice. It's not taking anything away from band by saying not a sport. It's an important part of athletic and high school events.

I like the point you made about a few players on the team giving the whole team a bad rep. I agree with this, but it is the coach's responsibility to correct this problem. No matter how good a player is, unethical play shouldn't be tolerated.

I don't necessarily think that a large number of 2A teams could play a 5A schedule and win. There are too many barriers to overcome. The most important is depth. Most 2A teams rely on a few star players, where as 5A teams have many more good athletes.
