I believe it was about a month or so after the season ended. She said she wanted to play for a program that could get her national exposure so she could continue her career in the WNBA.

Bush commutes Libby's prison sentence
coach15 replied to wingman10's topic in Politics, National Issues, & Controversy
Read that the Rep. John Conyers(D) is going to start a committee to investigate the commutation(sp?) of Scooter Libby. Ahhh...are tax dollars at work. I do not know if I agree completely with the commutation or not. But every time Bush takes a deep breath, the Democrats have to investigate. -

USC offers basketball scholarship to 8th-grader
coach15 replied to CoachT's topic in Open Discussion
Here is a great article about the subject of recruiting younger kids. College recruiting getting ridiculous IN THE DAWGHOUSE | ALEX BYINGTON Alex Byington There’s a terrifying trend going on in college basketball, and it has the possibility of corrupting the entire system from the bottom up. No, I’m not talking about the one-and-done route to the NBA. I’m referring to the increasing popularity of college coaches recruiting younger and younger athletes. University of Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie just hauled in his second commitment for the Class of 2010 in K.C. Ross-Miller, a 14-year-old point guard from Dallas. Gillispie’s relationship with Ross-Miller dates back to when the No. 15-rated player in his class, according to Scout.com, was just an eighth-grader and Gillispie was a first-year coach at Texas A&M. That makes the sixth recruit to commit to the Wildcats since Billy G took over just four months ago, a pleasant change for fans who like his aggressive tactics. Among his other commitments are Patrick Patterson and Alex Legion from the 2007 class, DeAndre Liggins from the Class of 2008, G.J. Vilarino from the Class of 2009, and the other sophomore-to-be in 6-foot-8 Dakotah Euton from Ashland, Ky. Although the high number of recruits is encouraging, their decreasing ages are not. Even though the NCAA forbids “direct contact” with potential recruits before the summer of their junior year, the organization allows these kids to attend summer “skill” camps at the colleges that put the “campers” in direct contact with the very coaches they’re not supposed to talking to. But Gillispie isn’t the worst abuser of this NCAA loophole. University of Southern California coach Tim Floyd has sought out and gotten verbal commitments from two eighth-graders over the past two years –– the latest being 14-year-old Ryan Boatright from Aurora, Ill. With two of the top five rated prospects from 2010 already committed, Ohio State coach Thad Matta is also dipping into the kiddie pool for recruits. So, what’s going on? Why are we seeking out these children? “We have a responsibility to get the best players we can find and know what the competition is doing,” Floyd told the Associated Press. Has competitiveness for the “best” kids forced college coaches to scrounge for talent at middle schools? There’s something seriously wrong with that way of thinking. First off, these kids don’t know any better and they’re not old enough or mature enough to understand the complexities associated with such a commitment. To them, it’s all about the hype that comes with associating themselves with a particular big-name school –– the glitz and glamour of the college experience. At a legal level, 14-year-olds aren’t even considered competent enough to be considered responsible for their own actions. So what makes us think that a college commitment that is officially four years away should even be considered any more concrete? We shouldn’t, so why do coaches continue to offer scholarships to kids not even old enough to sit behind the wheel of a moving vehicle? This is becoming a creepy statement about our society’s ever increasing infatuation with winning at all costs, including diluting the fun and enjoyment that should come from games like basketball and other competitive team-sports. Like a good friend of mine said when talking about this disturbing trend, “It’s like taking candy from a baby and then taking away the baby, too.” So, while you think happy thoughts about how bright the Wildcats’ future looks, remember the cost of that future could be a child’s innocence. -
