  1. Gibson County over CPA (if CPA had been drawn in the other bracket, I think they could have made the Championship Game). South Greene over Polk County (South Greene's experience and guard play should get them through) Westview over Lewis County (could be over really early; Lewis doesn't match-up well inside, and they don't really have anyone capable of shutting down Rechis) McMinn Central over Greeneville (should be the closest game of the first round and could go either way)
  2. I agree with GC. I think Jackson County will probably cruise to the final. The winner of the Wayne County/Moore County game should be the other team in the championship. I feel like Wayne County's size will give Moore County problems, much as it did last year in the Region 6A Semifinal game against Moore County that Wayne County dominated. Jackson County/Wayne County final with two of the state's top coaches in Brown and Byrd going at it. But, they play the games for a reason....good luck to all the teams.
  3. This should be a close game. Summertown is playing about as well right now as they have played all year long. Willard was quoted as saying that they were a "uniquely tough" bunch, and I have to agree. While some of the guards have major attitudes that can rub even neutral spectators the wrong way, it is those feisty attitudes that tend to drive them and their teammates in tough situations. With that being said, Moore County has a little more experience than Summertown, and I think Vann will be the best player on the court at all times. The inside game of Moore County should overpower Summertown, as I don't see Graham being mobile enough to contain Vann or Raby, and with Grooms's tendency to get in foul trouble, she could be in trouble early on in the game. The guard play is fairly even, and one should expect a lot turnovers by both teams considering the hard-nosed, in-your-face defense that both teams tend to play at times. If this game was able to be held at Moore County High School, I would go with them by 6 - 10. But since it is at Motlow, I think it will be very close with either team winning by no more than 5 points. Good luck to both teams.
  4. Could this finally be the year that Chandler gets his Scotts Hill girls to the 'Boro? I don't know of another coach that has been beaten in Sub-State as many times as he has (Bradford and Gleason have beaten him double-digit times in this game). Chandler is a good coach; hopefully, this will be the year for him and Scotts Hill to get over the Sub-State hump.
  5. Region 6A All-Tournament Team Kelsey Risner (So.) - Wayne County Carly Daniel (Jr.) - Wayne County Samantha Bell (Jr.) - Wayne County Jordan Risner (Sr.) - Wayne County Bobbi Dodson (Sr.) - Santa Fe Alycia Simmons (Jr.) - Perry County Brooke Warren (Sr.) - Perry County Courtney Grooms (So.) - Summertown Sommer Smith (So.) - Summertown Morgan Long (Fr.) - Summertown Sara Nelms (Sr.) - Cornersville Haley Fagan (Jr.) - Cornersville
  6. Well I think both games could go either way. The only thing I question is how you seem to think Prince is the only one to stop on Waverly. We have three girls who have hit over 35 threes for the year, two who have hit over 45 and several more who have contributed as well. Almost everyone in the lineup has the ability to step out and hit the three and the Tigerettes are fast and play great defense. Second, I don't see how you say that Waverly isn't as deep. Coach Rawlings plays 10 girls most of the time and not much drop off when any come in. I think they are deeper than any team I've seen all year. So if someone wants to think stopping Prince is the key, go ahead, because the others will make you pay dearly. Prince makes Waverly go; any one that has seen them play can tell you that. She is the leading scorer, she tells the girls where to go and what to do, and I would venture to say that she leads the team in assists, steals, and potentially top 2 or 3 in rebounds. There have been times in those games where the other players have stood around waiting for her to make something happen (and most of the time she did). If Waverly doesn't have Prince, then they would struggle with pressure defenses and have no real go-to player. Containing her is one of the main keys to defeating Waverly. As far as depth, just because Rawlings plays 10 girls, doesn't mean they are deep. In fact, in the games I saw Waverly this season (all of which were close games), she only played seven, maybe eight girls, but it definitely was not ten, and the ones she brought in were no where near the skill level of starters like Prince, Dyer, Bell, and Jones, so there is a drop-off. Waverly has to have Prince, and probably Dyer, on the floor at all times to win this game, and any games following this one assuming they move on. I will say they are probably the hottest team in the region right now considering their winning streak (all by double-digits I believe). As solid as Waverly is this year, next year they could be a scary good AA team. I hope Waverly pulls it out tomorrow night, but it won't be easy.
  7. Region 8A Semifinals 15A #1 Scotts Hill vs. 15A #3 Madison Academic - 6:00 PM 15A #2 Middleton vs. 15A #4 Adamsville - 7:30 PM Scotts Hill/Madison Academic could be a very interesting game. Patterson is always tough to beat in elimination games.
  8. Region 6A Semifinals 12A #2 Summertown vs. 12A #4 Perry County - 6:00 PM 12A #1 Wayne County vs. 11A #2 Santa Fe - 7:30 PM Good luck to all the teams. Regardless of who wins, the teams going to sub-state out of this region will be tough opponents for Region 5A.
  9. The post about this being fairly "unpredictable" is absolutely correct. In the Lewis County/Waverly game, you have two teams that rely heavily on their guard play. Waverly lives and dies by the 3-pointer, and if they are on from there, then Lewis County will be in trouble. Waverly cannot rely on Prince to do everything for them, and Lewis County has some length at a couple of the guard spots, especially with Crowell, that could make things tough on Prince if Helton decides to go man on Waverly. Contrastly, Lewis County has a better inside game than Waverly, and they have considerably more depth. I think Hinson at the point guard spot will have to have a huge game for them, or at the very least get the ball to the girls who are hot, whether it is Crowell or Helton or both. I don't think both coaches are about average, so I don't see either of them doing anything on their end that really affects this game. I think this game will simply come down to which team has the most players step-up and make the most plays. Looking at the teams and individual players, Lewis County has a slight edge, but I am hoping Waverly wins. The Hickman County/Camden Central game is even more unpredictable. Hickman County is a very balanced team with the outside game of Condor and Hutchinson to match the inside game of Wright. They have all of the necessary pieces, outside of another strong post-player to go with Wright. If she gets in foul trouble, then Hickman County could have a huge problem. Camden Central has three big time players as well in Brandenburg, Bannister, and Capps. Camden has a size advantage over Hickman County in most of the positions on the floor, but Hickman is slightly faster. Brandenburg will be a lot for Hickman to handle with her inside/outside game, and Capps is a pretty difficult matchup for Condor or any of the other Hickman County guards on the perimeter. I expect Hickman will press early to try to force Camden into some live ball turnovers. The game may very well come down to how well Camden handles Hickman County's pressure. This game could go either way.
  10. You are correct, "upset" probably wasn't the correct word for the Gleason/Greenfield game. I think most people, including myself, suspected that there would be an All-District 14A final in the Region 7A Championship game. That is where I probably pulled the word "upset" from. Gleason doesn't upset anyone as in tournament time, you almost always have to consider them the favorite; if anything is an upset, it is when they get beat by other teams.
  11. sportslover, I agree completely! You have the Gibson trio that includes AA Ms. Basketball finalist Heather Butler, Perica Glenn from Milan who is a great player, Jasmine James from Millington who is the absolute real deal and is a Ms. Basketball finalist in AAA, the girl from Ohio and from what I'm hearing on her is that she's Amber Rechis all over again, Beth Hawn from Forrest who is a class A Ms. Basketball finalist and many other great players coming in. You also got to remember that Weatherly will most likely be back next year as well as maybe Labrica Ward and a couple of this years players. Things are about to get real exciting for UT-Martin women's basketball! Congrats to Coach McMillan and the team on doing what they have done thus far! Sorry I got on a soap box on UT-Martin on a 13AA thread, however it does consist of 13AA players. UTM basketball is going to be very exciting to watch over the next few years. I think you can pretty much guarantee that Weatherly, Lyles, Ward, and Cupples will all be back and on full scholarship. Wright, could be, but that depends on how many scholarships he has (15, I believe). It will be interesting to see how he works it all out, but regardless of who he keeps, they will be very good next year under him as coach.
  12. I've even said that I thought Fussell is going to win Ms. Basketball this year. Not in this post, but I've told people around here that I thought she would. She was a finalist last year and people are going to see that she's signed with Texas and see her average PPG. From what I gathered in the CPA game is that she CAN shoot the lights out if open. However, when CPA was face guarding her she just stood around and didn't try to get open which of course her team set very few screens for her except when she did have the ball. She DID stand right in front of half court several times waiting for an outlet pass to go down for an open layup, sometimes it worked sometimes not. It wasn't everytime, but I sure saw it alot I do know that. She could handle the ball well in the open floor and broke CPA's press on her own several times. I never once shot down the fact that she's going to Kennesaw St. If you noticed, robpride, I put what college that all 3 girls signed with in my very first sentence of each one. If you think I was shooting her down for saying they just became a D1 University, I did not mean nothing negative in that. There's several D2's that are as good as D1's. Sorry we 3 people don't see eye to eye on this, but I really don't think Mills is as good as Butler or Fussell and I'll venture out to say that Rechis from Westview is a better overall player than her. Call it biased if you'd like, it's just the way I see it. I don't think anyone is debating that Fussell is the best player (that much is obvious), and I never said or implied that you didn't think Fussell was going to win it. What is being debated is the fact that you gave an "unbiased" opinion, but somehow managed to be extremely critical of Mills (after only seeing her play one game in your lifetime), while speaking highly of Fussell but managed to point out her weakness from behind the arc, and then lastly spoke highly of Butler but has nothing critical to say of her at all. When you are able to find weaknesses in the other two's games (one of which you've only seen play one time and not all those weaknesses are factual), yet you do not find weaknesses in Butler who is from Gibson County, then the post is not "unbiased". That is the only issue I had.
  13. I figured that either Lake County or Greenfield would be upset. However, I really didn't see both of them going down. I thought Greenfield would be extremely nervous considering this group hasn't been in this situation, and they are having to play Gleason in an elimination game, and everyone knows how tough that is to do. I am sure that Greenfield would have probably wanted to play just about anyone other than Gleason in that game. I really thought Lake County would win their game considering the run last year to Murfreesboro, and the large amount of experience they gathered from that run. However, Humboldt is a team that strikes me as scared of nothing. I could tell that about them in camp games this summer and at Westview before the season began, which is the only times I have seem this year. They have great athleticism, they hit the boards hard, and when they want to, they can pressure you on the defensive end relentlessly. The Region 7A Championship Game is a match-up between two teams that play on two completely different ends of the basketball spectrum in terms of basketball philosophy and strategy. Gleason is fundamentally sound, patient, and deliberate team on both ends of the floor. They will do all of the little things to win. They will run their offensive sets for 3:00 - 4:00 minutes at a time trying to lull the defense (and sometimes the crowd) to sleep. They will not beat themselves. Contrastly, Humboldt is an athletic, speedy, and aggressive team on both ends of the floor. They like to push the tempo on both ends of the floor. They will be faster than Gleason, and able to out-jump them at most positions. They will attempt to push the tempo of the game, because the faster the tempo, the better off Humboldt will be. However, Gleason always plays at their speed, and very few teams have been able to get them to change that. Under Frazier (and lets face it, that is who is still coaching them), they are in my mind, the absolute best team over the years in Tennessee at controlling the speed of the game, and keeping it at a level that they are comfortable playing in. This will be a very interesting game. I think the winner of this game will definitely be heading to Murfreesboro. Good luck to both teams.
  14. That game will be anything but boring. Good luck to both Westview and Obion County.
  15. First, let me start off saying that ALL three girls nominated for the Class AA Miss Basketball are worthy of the nomination. Secondly, I have seen all three girls play numerous times. I first saw Mills as a 10 year old in AAU, Butler as a 7th grader at Medina Middle, and Fussell as a 12 or 13 year old, and have watched them all play more times than I can count up until now. There is no doubt that Fussell is the best overall player, and she will probably win the award (and deservedly so). However, no one should be taking cheap shots at another nominee just because you are trying to support your favorite. You can support your player without doing that. GCPioneer, your post was about as far from "unbiased" as it could get. Somehow you managed to find things wrong with Fussell (shooting is suspect from long range) and Mills's games, but you didn't say a single thing about what could be improved in Butler's game (you might as well have said she is the perfect player). I am not saying that you are incorrect in some of the things that you said about Fussell and Mills, but if you are going to be "unbiased" then don't talk about the weaknesses of Fussell and Mills without throwing in at least one on Butler (I'm sure her game is not perfect). Somehow after watching Mills play only one game, you came to the conclusion that she doesn't play defense, doesn't shoot correctly, doesn't rebound, and is overall a lazy player. You got all of that from one game? I have never known Mills to not play defense, shoot from the hip, or be lazy by standing at half court, and I don't think I have seen her do any of those three things in the 40+ times I have saw her over her basketball playing career. The only thing I can somewhat agree on is that she doesn't always rebound consistently, but at 5-4, she is not going to dominate the glass. I am not trying to get on you GCPioneer, I think you know that. Just the next time you are going to post something "unbiased," take off the 13AA rose colored glasses first.
  16. In terms of Class A, AA, and AAA, the ballots are spot on for this year. I would have chosen these young ladies as well, assuming, of course, that I was able to nominate ( ). Congrats to all the nominees; you are all well-deserving of the honor.

  21. The rule came about when fans traveled long distances to tournament games but could not get in because it was sold out. And it was mainly the small Class A schools whose tournament games were sold out. It is usually those small town teams that will bring the most people with them, because of the community support they receive. This is why the seating capacity is not a problem for AA and AAA (for the most part), because RARELY will you find one of those games even close to being sold-out (more students and larger school, but less community support and fans). So, I can see both sides of the argument. However, when you are traveling two hours to a sub-state game, one would hope that they actually have enough room for everyone to come in and actually watch the game. If you gym isn't big enough, you need to find one that is, so that you can accommodate both teams and their fans.
  22. I don't have the actual bracket, and I may never be able to find it considering it's Memphis-based Class A teams (and they don't post information), but here are the final standings for the district (as best as I can find), and what the bracket should look like: District 16A - Girls Season Finish 1.
