  1. Didn't you guys give Greenback their only loss that year during the regular season? Edit: I remember there was a heck of a game by the Pirates up at Copper Basin that year to get into the playoffs. That was an atmosphere. They had 2 all state QB platooning up there. No SP didn't start playing Greenback in the regular season until 1993. After our initial meeting in the playoffs in 1985 we didn't beat Greenback again until 1993. They owned us in the playoffs for three straight years 90,91 & 92. They had a great QB that i think his last name was Ryan. Yes, that Copper Basin game from 1987 is still talked about. I work with one of running backs for Copper Basin that year and he still doesn't like to be reminded about us scoring 3 td's in about a minute or so to win the game. Also remember the 1987 Whitwell game even though we lost that was an awesome game also.
  2. I take it you were the quarterback in the 1987 football season. I seen you at the Jasper game and was wanting to get over and speak to you but didn't get the chance. We graduated together and played baseball together. It is good to hear from you.
  3. Okay, I am going to post and say it is time for this thread to be closed. I have seen a lot of football in my life and I work with a current high school official who probably works on the best crew in the area and I have been asked before to join in on the fun and become an official. But, I worked in radio for years back in the 90's and broadcasted a lot of high school games across the state. I had rather just watch games now instead of working in them. I will say the officiating left something to be desired and it affected both teams. In the first half there were several "no calls" concerning holding that should have been called and the visitors benefited from those. The home team benefited at the end of the game when there was a issue with the clock. But, really the clock situation would not have affected the outcome in my opinion. This was a good game and ended up being a close game. I said when I seen SP's schedule and knew how good Boyd and Polk were going to be I knew at best SP would be 1-1 in those two games. SP played very well and have showed the state that they can play with 4A, 3A, & 2A teams. SP should go deep in the 1A playoffs and more than likely will be in Cookville. I will say it again it is time for these teams including their fans to move on. By the way, It is time for this thread to be closed.
  4. Okay, I don't post much but I can not resist this one. I have been watching high school football a long time and this one has the potential of being one of the best non-playoff games I have seen. The big question is can the D of Polk stop (not contain) SP's very fast offense. I have seen highlights of Polk and yes you can see them lay some hard hits but remember you have to catch them before you can hit them. Here's SP's question: Can SP's very fast and aggressive D shut down Polk's methodical 4 yards and a cloud of dust (or mud) time consuming offense? It is a no brainer Polk doesn't have the speed or have they seen the kind of speed SP has. If Polk is able to establish drives and control the clock they have a chance. If SP scores quick and gets up by 2 or 3 touchdowns Polk is in for a long night. Both are good teams should go deep in the playoffs so we will see what happens Friday. One last thing, Polk when you go to the playoffs please have a better showing than the area 3A teams have shown the past few years.
  5. This is my first chance to post since the game has been played. But, really I don't post much anyway. This game concerned me all week because I wondered how we would respond in a close game against a team with a good line. Well, I still think we could have responded better than we did in a close game. Conditions were horrible and this game should have been played on Thursday with or without the starting QB. I think Boyd's line isn't hardly as good as advertised but they are good. It was a good game but the circumstances hurt SP and that is just the way it goes sometimes. I could say more but I won't. I don't see SP having any problems the rest of the way especially if everyone is healthy.
  6. I respect what you have been able to do over at central, but in my opinion SP's athletes are different then Centrals...........and you probably know that also if you are true with yourself about things. OP, I am not a bitter person like you, and others may hope the pirates lose every week, but not me. I have supported them when marion was out of the playoffs and I wouldn't waste my 7 bucks if I was hoping for them to lose. Vic knew what he was doing when he scheduled Central and I am sure he didn't think they would be undefeated and ranked in the state. Coach Grider scheduled Central because he is friends with Coach Barger and because Brent Cooper, a former teacher and coach at SP, is the AD. Similar reason why he scheduled Polk (also ranked) and tried to schedule Seq Co. Also Coop is a former pirate wingback from the early 90's. His senior year was Don Grider's last season.
  7. These schools have met only one other time in history in football and that was in 1942. Central won that one 33-6. Of course this is not 1942 but SP should not act as though they have it won before it is played. Vic said himself he didn't know if SP has any business playing a school that large. It is neat though to say they haven't played since 1942. I personally think that SP wins but I am cautious in saying by how much. It should be a very good game. I am not going to be able to make the trip but should be able to listen on the radio.
  8. I still hate that I will miss this game but been planning on the trip to the beach for a while now. Cascade will not be a push over at all but if we play like we are capable of playing we should win. But, the offense will have to produce more than it did this past Friday no matter which offense we run. Our defense is excellent, not perfect, but they are very good right now. Hope SP pulls this one out in what I think will be a hard fought game against two good teams.
  9. Okay, first of all I hate it that I will miss the SP and Cascade game but I will be relaxing on the beach. I will be back for the Signal game though. Alright, Now I want to talk about the Jasper game. This was the first time I had seen SP since last years Trousdale game and it looked very similar. I think I- formation and wing-t is the formations for the talent we have and I sat next to a living legend coach last night who thought the same thing. Use the spread when needed but as a primary offense it is not very good. There were several times last night that SP could have gotten a first down by running a quick trap play up the middle. That living legend that I sat with last night even said that he needs to have a talk with some offensive coaches and he just may do it. SP's defense is very good and appears to be one of the better defenses SP has had in their history. But, we can't afford to get any more key people hurt. These are my opinions and observations and if the offensive problems are not corrected it will be hard to beat Boyd and Signal for sure and possibly Chatt Central and Polk. I would hate for a good defensive team like SP has lose some games that they shouldn't lose. I hope SP wins Friday but I am concerned with the play of the offense.
  10. Thanks. I was hoping that it would be the week 3 open date that we had. I'm not a big fan of week zero but I know to have a 10 game schedule sometimes it has to be used. The schedule I have has the Grace game a home game for SP.
  11. What week is the SP vs. Cascade game next season? I know SP had week three open and didn't have a week zero. Just wondering? Also, who is home first?
  12. Well, I don't say a whole lot and when I do I try to put a lot of thought into it. I have been watching SP since 1976 (the first game I remember South Pittsburg vs. Sequatchie Co.) I have seen a lot of football at the high school level since I was 6 years old. I have had the pleasure of seeing some great games and not so great games and also I have missed some good ones in the last 10 years due to other things going on in life. I will have to say the TC and SP game was a classic probably the best I have seen (that is debateable). I have seen a lot of games from a somewhat neutral perspective since at one time I was a broadcaster. I have seen football from most classifications most of the larger class games being from middle Tennessee. I haven't broadcasted a game in 9 years the last being Sequatchie Co. vs Grundy Co. in 1999 (CHS4Life correct me if I am wrong). The game last Friday was the BEST I have seen I would have liked to one more time had the opportunity to broadcast or do PA for a game as good as that one. Congratulations to TC you have a great team and I knew going in that the game would be decided by a touchdown or less. Both teams played great defense and TC made the plays when they needed them. SP couldn't really get going until the 4th quarter and I thought they scored with too much time left. TC really put together a great drive at the end to eat up clock and eventually score. TC has my support and hopefully we can get together for a couple of regular season games in the future. I think it would make both teams better.
  13. Congrats to the bulldogs they played their hearts out. Yes, SP was very sluggish offensively I think everyone including coaches , players and most definitely the fans took them lightly. There was some things that the casual fan might not have noticed but one of the starting running backs didn't start and Jones didn't play any of fourth quarter. I believe he was pulled right before South Pittsburg's last score. A second teamer scored the last td of the game. There were some bone jarring hits applied by SP's defenders and Clay's players kept coming back. I commend them for that. By the way, the toughest playoff game last year for SP was Trousdale. Hampton scored more points but I think Trousdale would have beat them if they had played one another. With that said it is time for round two and not more about the past or the distant future. One game at a time and attention is on FCS now.
  14. I know there are some games to play. I follow SP and other teams in the Sequatchie valley. I will say that South Pittsburg's defense is better this year than last year. Ask Boyd and Tyner fans. They have enough depth to have a offensive line and a defensive line. None of the lineman go both ways unless it is late in the game (when it has been decided) to give some of the O-lineman some experience on D and only 2 of the starting D-lineman will play O for experience. This is not to stir anything up because each team has to take care of business to get to the semis. You wanted to know some info and this is what I know about SP's defense. They also have very good linebackers one of them is a D-I propect. I don't know much about Trousdale other than the fact last year they were very tough for a 1st round game and they didn't graduate many from last year's team.
  15. Tennessee Temple folded their football program and they couldn't get a game to replace it. They did find out last week that since they couldn't schedule a game it would be a 1-0 forfeit win. There were 3 other teams in our region that got forfeit wins too.
  16. The tailback didn't get injured until the week after. South Pittsburg was without their starting QB and if you remember that QB was a sophmore named Eddie Moore.
  17. Trust me they are right. Whatever else that the TSSAA has is wrong.
  18. Hey Sportman, Do you really think Grace Christian really wants any of SP? I don't think so.
  19. Well, I guess I have kept quiet long enough. I have seen a lot of these battles through the years. South Pittsburg has talent, homefield, last two years and depth going for them. The Warriors have better work ethic (compared to previous years), new excitement and wanting to break SP's streak going for them. I also have heard that the Warriors are stronger and in better shape for the end of the game than in the past couple of years. It definitely should be a great game and I am excited about it being football time again. As far as a prediction goes I think with the speed and depth that SP has (I can remember when it was the warriors who had more speed and depth) they should pull out the win. But, with rivalries you have to know that the best team doesn't always win. Should be a great game with SP winning by the score of : Pirates 30 Warriors 20.
  20. I would say longest throw would be South Pittsburg's QB since he won it last year as a junior. Even though he was a backup last year he definitely had a stronger arm than last year's starter.
  21. It was 1989 in the first round of the playoffs against Midway. Lance Wheaton was their quarterback and yes he was embarrassing us. They were leading 20-0 late in the 2nd quarter. SP scored and got a 2 point conversion to make it 20-8 right before the half. Lance got hurt late in the 2nd quarter and Midway wasn't the same. South Pittsburg scratched back and tied the game. In overtime the Pirates scored on the 1st or 2nd play and Midway fumbled on their first play Pirates win 28-20. I have the game on VHS at home I still cannot believe we won that game just like I can't believe we choked the next week against Oneida.
  22. The 2007 Pirates scored 719 in 15 games this season.
  23. Hello good friend. It would have been nice when we were doing the games to get the opportunity to do a championship game. I know you were able to do it but I never had the chance. There was a certain barber that has a shop in downtown SP told me to tell you hello. How about those Pirates? Pretty good don't you think?
