  1. If I'm wrong, I'll blame my daughter as she said he posted on his Instagram. From what I understand, Logan Ashton from Buford, Ga and Stanford is transferring to UTC with 3 years of eligibility remaining. Logan was a 2 time Georgia State champ and 2 time runner up. If my memory serves me correctly, both his losses in the finals were to 4-timer Caden McCrary who is now wrestling at North Carolina. He was a NCAA qualifier this year...won his pigtail and then lost to #1 seed Suriano of Michigan and then 3-1 to #16 seed Hildebrandt of Penn State. 2. That is cool.....hard to believe it's been 18 years since my son trained at Arturo's TWC.....
  3. Maybe drag that Cal Poly coach back.....
  4. Dang....if more than 1 could score.....Collins Hill would have come in 1st and 2nd back in the day....used to wrestle the JV in the state duals up until the finals....probably could have won with the JV most years. Ah..the good old days....
  5. I can't remember the year it happened, but one of the best duals I can remember was when Bradley was rolling had won state and Parkview was the top dog in Georgia. They had a dual prior to a UTC match and it was awesome. Be cool to do that today with the top teams from Tennessee and tops from Georgia....maybe a Baylor, Cleveland, Camden County, Buford deal. And back when Coach Ramos was still around at Collins Hill they'd roll right into Freestyle after the state tournament. Practices were open to all schools too. One year had a couple of AA's from Iowa run the practices.
  6. I think GA is up to maybe 12 or 13 D1 AA's.......I think last few are Peter Yates (3x), Ryan Millhof, Sean Russell, Chip Ness (2x), and Daniel Bullard. Taylor Lujan, of UNI, most likely would be and AA had the tournament not been cancelled as he was #1/#2 ranked going in. Got a chance with a few spread around the country this year. I don't follow it as closely as I used too.
  7. I complain about Georgia because I live there, assisted with a fairly successful program, and also helped run the state tournaments for several years. When we moved here there were 5 classifications and now there are 7. Georgia has still never produced a NCAA D1 National Champ and I think only had 1 reach the finals....Charlie Heard. My nephew's teammate at Baylor did pretty well....Jordan Leen. I do like the USA Wrestling program that's here for the youth.
  8. Fairly certain Randy Batten, of UTC, was 3 time D2 National Champ (75-78) and competed in the NCAA D1 tournament. I know at least once he was one match from AA.
  9. On the crowning of too many state champions....check out this quote from the GHSA web site: "The 2022 GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championships were held February 10-12 at the Macon Centerplex. Congratulations to the 108 individual state champions in boys & girls divisions and to all the competitors. The team winners were: Camden County (7A), Buford (6A), Cass (5A), West Laurens (4A), Gilmer (3A), Lovett (2A), and Trion (1A)."
  10. NICE!.....unrelated but I thought I'd share here.....on Big10 Network....there are 2 duals every Friday evening. And if you haven't seen the Big Story episode on the Brands brothers it's a must see.
  11. If you want more chances to win a state medal.....move down here to Georgia.....pick one of the 7 classifications. I'd rather have like the old days with 1 classification.....heck even California only has 1.
  12. Wow...hadn't seen some of those user names in a while! I miss Walkenvol.
  13. I could be wrong because I've been out of working the GA state tournament for a while, but I'm pretty sure for at least the larger classifications here the sectional brackets here are 16 man. And I mentioned the hotel because for a team in Gwinnett like Collins Hill or Mountain View their sectional is often in Camden county or down in Valdosta. The driving force here for sectionals was the cost of the venue for state and the smaller brackets mean less days at the venue.
  14. Ok....commenting here because we (GA) moved to sectionals several years ago and from what I've seen there has been no drop in participation. The plus, you can wrestle a 16 man bracket in a day. The minus, you still probably have to get a hotel for wherever your sectional is located. And if you want your kid to participate in a state tournament....come to Georgia.....since I think we have 7 of them. (kidding....don't blast me for that)
  15. His freshman state finals match against Ryan Millhof was epic.
  16. Pretty sure 2020 was his last year of eligibility.
  17. You'd think UNI would include his 28-2 senior year....with him ranked #2 at 184 going into the NCAA that was cancelled. https://www.wrestlestat.com/wrestler/39506/lujan-taylor/profile
  18. Make it a TRI meet......add in Camden County, GA.
  19. BCB....oh man.....I haven't heard that name in while. Hope you're doing well and keeping the pubs open. RMC
  20. https://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/sports/legendary-beloved-gwinnett-wrestling-coach-cliff-ramos-dies-after-long-cancer-battle/article_fe0fe790-0f55-11eb-adfb-df1b4635fb41.html
  21. Some of you might remember this guy.....hope he does well. Collins Hill hires Ryan Millhof, Gwinnett's first NCAA wrestling All-American, as head coach https://www.gwinnettprepsports.com/sports/collins-hill-hires-ryan-millhof-gwinnetts-first-ncaa-wrestling-all-american-as-head-coach/article_589945c0-10c0-5643-afad-0189dfb6ab42.html
  22. One of our local kids was caught up in this.....Nick Stonecheck.
  23. I wanted to say...I don't like the 7 divisions either. It may make sense for some sports, but they don't do it in GA. for lacrosse......so why not use those divisions for wrestling. Then it would be 1A-5A and 6A-7A. I helped run the state tournament here for about 10 years. The reason for the 16 man brackets was to shorten the length of the tournament and reduce cost of places like the Gwinnett Arena. So, now we have sectionals ahead of the state tournament. So you go region, section, state.....top 8 from each section to state. And to keep focus on this thread........I also had a nephew that was a state champ at Baylor. I'm guessing had he not gone to Baylor, he was probably zoned for Soddy Daisy. Odd how Corday was at Buford last year??......where my youngest was....but she was a manager.
  24. Agree.......I wasn't sure if Woodland and Baylor saw each other this year. I remember when my son was a senior at CH......we lost to Blair.....33-30.
  25. Collins Hill had 6 in the state finals and won 5 of them.....check out their new coaching staff.....and I think had 11 medalists......in 7A.
