  1. Are you telling me that if a kid enrolls in the spring at BA and then changes his mind over the summer, that the parents are responsible for an entire year's tuition? I can understand losing any deposit. That is only fair, since that student may have taken a spot that could have gone to another potential student. If there is a waiting list, then the spot could probably be filled. Is the full tuition due in the spring before the student enrolls? (I would think it would be difficult to collect that bill if the student never enrolled in the school. Since I have never seen a BA contract, I am in the dark on that one.) Would the school be understanding if a financial hardship caused the decision? I would hope so. "Look at the submitted documents in this case and you will see that Riverdale sends a very similar letter to the one BA sent before the school year begins. What's the difference? You tell me!" Isn't is different for a public school to invite students in a "natural feeder school" to participate than for a private school to invite students from other schools? I don't know enough about Rutherford County's zoning, so I am just wondering on this one. If Riverdale does indeed send out similiar letters, are they to students at natural feeder schools who will be going to Riverdale regardless? There would be no problem if an 8th grader in the Brentwood Academy Middle School participated in BA's spring practice. They are in a natural feeder school. If an 8th grader at JT Moore, Franklin Middle, or Bass Middle... was invited to participate, that would be a stretch. While a student at those schools is free to go to BA, he is not in a natural feeder situation-even if he had applied and been accepted. He still wasn't "enrolled" at the school in the spring. If anyone can clear up the Riverdale parallel, please do so. Stan Trott seems certain that Riverdale doesn't invite 8th graders. Is there any link to the documents that were introduced in court?
  2. [ Look at Friday night's GC game as a blue print to beat DL. However, GC was successful because they had already played DL once. GC defended the wing-t much better this time around. There is also a good chance that DL overlooked GC, because they had beaten them 28-3 in the first meeting. You will have to play hard till the last second ticks away. Good luck....you will need it. I can assure you that the DL team didn't overlook Giles County. They knew they would have their hands full and they did. Giles played a fantastic game. They could have easily been up 21-0 at the half. The DL defense figured a way to keep them out of the endzone and kept them in the game. Look for Giles to be a great team for years to come. They have great coaches and a team that really believes in themselves.
  3. Doesn't Greenbrier play a full b-team schedule on Monday nights and freshman schedule on Thursday nights? If that is true, then that means there are another 40 to 50 of those 90 on the sidelines getting a lot of experience each week.
  4. In the words of my high school football coach, "A wounded Tiger is a deadly Tiger." With the talent that MC has, Lipscomb better not be overlooking this game. Last year, Hightower put almost 200 yds on the Mustangs-a lot of it in the first quarter. I hope the Mustangs come to play.
  5. Amen to all of the above. Greenbrier has one of the best coaching staffs around! You just can't please some people. In the 1980's, I sat in the stands in Gallatin one night and listened to 2 parents in front of me grip the whole night about how poor Gallatin was coached, how they played the wrong players and how the administation needed to do something about the head coach. He kept saying, "I just hate it for the kids. They deserve better." Gallatin was 12-0 and playing in the third round of the playoffs while the men were complaining that night. Greenbrier will be back up again in the near future-maybe even by the end of the week.
  6. coach d; If you really want to be a coach, then follow your dream. When I was in high school, I wanted to be a teacher and coach. A few of my teachers told me that I could do better and discouraged me. My coaches encouraged me to follow my dream. I started college and was a business major for 2 days before I switched to education. After 24 years of teaching and coaching, I have had many friends who work in the business world come up to me and say that they would love to be on the sidelines coaching on Friday Night and if they could do it all again, they would have gone into education. (I have yet to tell one of them that I would love to have been in last week's audit with them and if I had it to do over, I would get an accounting major-not that there is anything wrong with that.) I made up my mind long ago to never discourage a student who wanted to teach. About 10 minutes ago, a former student walked into my classroom wearing a shirt and tie. He was on campus to observe another teacher because he is now at MTSU as an education major. I never would have guessed he would teach, but more power to him. You won't get rich teaching, but the fringe benefits can be "eternal". Good luck!
  7. I played in West Tn in the 70's. I was a USA Today All American and was recruited by several schools. We were undefeated in the regular season, but got cheated by bad refs in the playoffs. Not making it to the title game cost me a chance to play in college, so I opted to go to a small school and play intramural football where my social club won the campus wide championship my senior year. Since no NFL team drafted me and no one offered enough to me as a free agent, I entered the working world and gave up playing football. A lot has happened in the last 30 years. I have gone from being a small lineman, to being an All American and our actual 5-5 record is now undefeated and we made the playoffs. Give me 30 more years and I will probably recall that we won the State Championship, I got a full ride to Notre Dame and won the Heisman and played in the Super Bowl for Tom Laundry as a Dallas Cowboy. The longer you are out of school, the better you get. (I still don't know why there weren't any colleges interested in a 185 lb tackle.) Seriously, after my last game my senior year, I drove my dad's car to the top of the drive overlooking Ripley High School's Tiny Knee Stadium, sat on the hood, looked over the field and cried like a baby because I knew I would never play again. The men who molded my life will always be dear to me. High School football is about memories and relationships. I played for great men like Grant Shipley, Daryl Walker, Maurice Kelly, Ike Taylor, Rick Rodriguez, Steve Carmack and Herb Cummings who gave me much more than I could ever repay. Football is the greatest "TEAM SPORT" that man has invented and I am grateful that I had the chance to be a very small part of it.
  8. Don't count Goodpasture out. Physically, they are big, strong and athletic on the line. I'm sure some would think, "just look at last year's Blue Cross Bowl. Alcoa blew out Goodpasture." That was last year. Alcoa fans should remember that in 2003, they lost big to Lipscomb in the semi-finals and then came back with a team that was a year older the next year and beat Lipscomb by several touchdowns. Goodpasture returns a lot of starters from last year. It would be fun to see a rematch of last year's 2A title game. Alcoa may very well repeat as champs-the Maryville score means that they are still very good-but a rematch would be a much better game than last year.
  9. Thanks for helping me on the names. Y'all ran a wishbone from a 2 split end formation. It was a tough offense to defend. You had the triple option threat with hard nosed backs and Ables had the talent to catch a deep pass at any point. I loved watching that offense. The next season, Lipscomb came to Dunlap. If I remember right, you had an assistant coach parachute into the game with the game ball. He landed on the 50, took off his chute and then went to the sidelines and put on the headphones. The Indians were fired up at that point. Lipscomb hit 2 big plays early and then hung on with a goalline stand late in the game to win a very close game. Dunlap is a beautiful place and the football team's are always going to play tough.
  10. I have only seen Sequatchie County play a few times over the years, but you had a player in the late 80's who was as tough as nails. I think his last name was Broome. Y'all came up and played Lipscomb in 1987 and beat them by several touchdowns. This player suffered a broken jaw during the game. While his jaw was hanging limp and the Lipscomb doctor and trainers from both teams were looking at him, he kept asking when he could get back in the game. According to the Lipscomb team doctor, he was operated on overnight and then joined his teammates for a day at Opryland on Saturday. That kid was tough. Coach Fulkerson had a very good, hard-hitting team that year. While I don't remember names, there should be several kids from that group who should get consideration. I think they had one young man on that team who played at the Air Force Academy.

  13. Great post Peter. Coach Mac would show his wrath on any of the players if they were in this thread. They are smart enough not to be posting here. His first goal for the team is to show class-win or lose. Unfortunately, he has no control over ex-players who are missing a few letters from the AWHPC (attitude, work, hustle, pride and class) that was preached to them daily and he has no control over former students who were never on the team. A few bad apples are rotting the barrel and the reputation Coach Mac has worked for. Shame on you guys! As for the notion that Lipscomb is elitist. The vast majority are not. Look at the coaching staff. Coach Mac is from Huntingdon, Coach Morris is from Searcy, AR, Coach Taylor is from Ripley, Coach Tillman is from Guntersville, AL, Coach Weber is from Ohio and Coach Blair is from Michigan. Most of these men were educated at public high schools (only Coach Stewart went to Lipscomb. His mom made unbelievable sacrifices for him to do that. He didn't have a silver spoon in his mouth. It was probably a plastic fork.) and learned their work ethic and football knowledge from some great public school coaches like Paul Ward, Grant Shipley, Daryl Walker, John Tucker... These are small town guys who owe a lot to the public schools where they were educated. They are trying to instill the same things in their kids that their coaches instilled in them. They can all identify with the pride in the Livingston community because these men grew up in similiar towns and went to similiar schools. If you get a chance, look at their hands during the tv broadcast. You won't see any state championship rings on their fingers. It's not what they are about. I know they were given rings, but they don't wear them. I know some of you ex-Lipscomb guys are trying to be comedians. A few of you have gone past being Jerry Seinfield and sound more like T.O. or Randy Moss. I'm really glad the season is almost over so this stuff will stop. I hope some of you will mature before next August. When the game ends Saturday, here is what will happen. If Lipscomb wins, the coaches and players will walk across the field, shake hands and congratulate LA on a great season. If Lipscomb loses, the coaches and players will walk across the field, shake hands and congratulate LA on a great season. I would expect that Livingston will do the same. The game will be played on the field by many young men who have worked hard. It won't matter how much money their families earn, what kind of truck or car they drive, where their parents work and what part of town they live in. That won't matter for 48 minutes on Saturday afternoon. May the best team win.
  14. You can get a roster out of the TSSAA playoff program. There should be a box in the ticket booth.
  15. The original question is "will this game decide the state???" After taking a second look at the brackets, I found that the winner will not get the gold ball after the game. They will only earn the right to play the Covington/Crockett County winner in the semis. They won't award a gold ball to the winner of the next game either. There will still be a game to be played versus a team from the East. The state probably won't be decided until about 2:15 to 2:30 CST on Dec. 3. I just hope the scoreboard has recovered from the 2A match up. Alcoa could burn out several light bulbs.
  16. This thread reads more like a Terrell Owen or Dennis Rodman press conference than a cross country discussion. This kind of trash talking and bragging doesn't belong in high school sports. It belongs in professional "wrestlin". I've got a pretty good idea that Coach Presnell would be embarrassed and disappointed by what some Etown people have posted. He has always been a first class guy. I don't know FRA's xxtry coach that well, but I do know that Coach Tucker would be angry if any of his distance runners participated in this trash. Coach Tucker is a humble man who would hate this lack of class. I always thought if you did it on the track (or xxtry course), there was no need to talk about it. I guess that the negative influences of a few loud mouth pro athletes has crossed over into cross country. I always thought distance runners were a higher class bunch of athletes. I guess this proves that there are a few bad apples in even the most honorable of sports.
  17. The TSSAA website has it 39-36 with Giles County winning. If that is true, it is a shocker.
  18. Here are my top 5 2a teams. 1. Alcoa 2. Alcoa JV 3. Alcoa Middle School 4. Alcoa junior pro 5. Goodpasture, Milan, Huntingdon (tie)
  19. Great idea! These schools eliminated private schools and a magnet school from the tournament. That can't happen unless they have some unfair advantage. With West TN girls taking 2 of 3, then West Tennessee took 5 of 6 championships. It just isn't fair that schools from 2/3 of the state only won 1/6 of the titles. Something must be done to level the playing field. A 1.9 sounds about right. On the AA broadcast, one of the commentators said that basketball was king in West Tennessee just as football is king in places like Gallatin and Lincoln County. I will agree that basketball is big in West Tennessee, but I would put up Milan, Covington or Huntingdon on a fall Friday night with any town in the state.
  20. There is a Powell Construction Company crane and a truck load of steel beams in the picninc area behind stadium this morning. The foreman said the steel was left over from the TDOT project at I-40 and White Bridge Road. Bo Wilkerson had requested that the supports to the press box be tripled. Only half of the steel will be used at Lipscomb. Mr. Wilkerson had instructed them to head to Dover this afternoon to reinforce the Stewart County pressbox for some activity there next Friday night. I asked who was paying for all of this and he said the total bill was being paid by someone named "Big Tex".
  21. Knute Rockne-All American for all of us "old timers" was a great film. Yes it's corny, but hearing the late great Ronald Reagan say "go out and win one for the gipper" and hearing Coach Rockne testify before congress about why America needs football are great moments in the film that make it worth watching. Greatest football book of all time: TOUCHDOWN FOR TOMMY. It is the only book that Lipscomb Middle School coach Kevin Temple ever read from cover to cover.
  22. "Look up, don't look down. When you look down, all you see is your feet." Kent Scott-1982 Peabody Coach Kent Scott made this profound statement many years ago. A man who thinks that deeply is destined to be a great coach. Congratulations on a great win Coach Scott. I am happy for you and all of the Golden Tide players and fans.
  23. Lipscomb was scheduled to scrimmage Wilson Central on this Friday. Wilson Central called today and cancelled. Lipscomb needs to find a scrimmage for Friday. If any mid-state teams need a scrimmage, please call Coach Glenn McCadams at 279-6407.
