  1. These girls are preparing for college at this time. I haven't heard of any of them playing AAU. I did read somewhere that Ashleigh Newman is playing fastpitch softball for the Shelbyville Eaglettes and doing a great job. I believe all of the Seniors from last year's NIKE team have signed though. That shows how important it is to get exposure during the Spring/Summer months as many of the young ladies who signed would not have been seen by the colleges they signed with had they not been playing over the Spring/Summer. Congrats to all!
  2. It was a lot closer than folks expected. I happened to stop by to see this game and the final score was 5-3 Coffee Co. But the most amazing thing was "Guess who's on 3rd" for Shelbyville? None other than the Midstate Player of the Year in Basketball, Ashleigh Newman. She led Shelbyville that night with 3 singles... 2 of them she hit to the infield and beat them out with her speed! I was told the pitcher for Shelbyville was a Freshman! This team looks pretty good and I was impressed! They might just shake up their district this season as they start to gel.
  3. I'd have to say Ashleigh Newman of Shelbyville was the best all around player in the state but Katrina Beechboard was definitely in the top 3. I believe Newman should have won the AAA Miss Basketball award but Fuller gets more publicity and that's why she was selected. I do believe the other young ladies who won were very deserving of the awards though. Had Fuller played a full season (or even two-thirds) instead of half (18 out of 36 games), she may have deserved this award also. But since Newman carried the team in Fuller's absence and was the state MVP (AAA) for the 2nd year in a row, she deserved the Ms. Basketball award. Top 5 in the State (all around): 1. Ashleigh Newman - Shelbyville 2. Katrina Beechboard - Livingston Academy 3. Alex Fuller - Shelbyville 4. Brooke Johnson - Seymour 5. Marissa Hensley - Jackson County There were several great players in the 2004 class. Good luck to all of them. We'll be watching you play in college!
  4. If Newman is from Shelbyville, then why did she say after signing with Maryland it was good to back home to play? CHS4Life, I believe I said Newman was the only other one who didn't grow up in Shelbyville but her mom did. Her mother also played for Insell. Now, don't you think her mom would know which program would be best for her child--especially since she played for the best herself? Read the whole sentence next time.
  5. This topic is funny. I only know of two girls on Shelbyville's team that are not from Shelbyville or Bedford County this year and that's Almader and Kelley. Everyone else either grew up in Shelbyville or Bedford County as far as I know. The only other one who didn't grow up in Shelbyville was Newman and her mom is from there and played for Insell. So I'd say about 90% are homegrown. Since Newman and Fuller account for more than half of the team's scoring, I can't see why it would be an issue. Any of the other girls on the team could fill in the other 3 positions and they would still beat most teams. I think most people just "beat this dead horse to death"! Shelbyville has an awesome program, coach and players, regardless of the negative comments.
  6. Congratulations to Shelbyville #23 in the country and to Livingston on their regional ranking! Also, to Ashleigh Newman of Shelbyville selected as USA Today's Player of the Week! Congratulations!
  7. I have to laugh at the comment about Newman & Fuller being slow. There isn't a slow starter on Shelbyville's team. All of those thinking LA would beat Shelbyville must be from Livingston. First of all, do you really think Thurman or whoever LA's post is could do anything with Fuller? Not gonna happen! Fuller "schooled" her several times in AAU. Newman and Beechboard are only evenly matched when they play against other teams. Newman is too versatile and has too many moves for Beechboard to hang with her. Beechboard is a good player though and should do well in college. I really do like her style. There is not a better one-two punch in the state than Newman and Fuller, as evidenced by this past weekend. Combine that with the 3-pt shooting of Canon and Almader and the ballhandling of Houston and you've got yourself a team that could beat many college teams. Trust me when I say, no one was going to beat Shelbyville after Christmas because they were willing to leave blood, sweat and tears in every gym they played in so long as they came out with the win! LA would give a valiant effort but Shelbyville has too many weapons and would win by 10-15 pts. I've scouted both teams several times over the last 3 years and that's my scouting report.
  8. AAA: Newman - Shelbyville - MVP Fuller - Shelbyville Cannon - Shelbyville Bullard - Craigmont Mitchell - Craigmont Jackson? - Craigmont Hollifield - Powell Lyons - Greeneville Manuel - Greeneville That's the only names I can remember at this time....Maybe someone else got the other name(s).
  9. I agree with your winners (even though I don't agree with the margin of victory). However, as far as Miss Basketball Finalist go. You can arguably say that all the girls you picked are great candidates and have done a lot for their teams. However, the winners should be as follows: AAA: Ashleigh Newman (or Alex Fuller) - Shelbyville --both of these young ladies have done it all for their teams. They are playing in the State Championship game on Saturday night. This is the epitome accomplishment in high school basketball. While I feel Cait is a great player, her name really came on the scene this year. Fuller and Newman have given it their all for 4 years and have a chance to end their careers with 3 State Championship rings out of those 4 years. I say Newman instead of Fuller only because of Fuller missing half the season but they are both great players and make the players around them better. It is not a 1 man show. AA: Brooke Johnson - Seymour - helped her team get to the semifinals of State Tournament... A: Michelle Snow - Clarkrange - playing in finals of State Tournament Division II: Sarah Baker - Harpeth Hall - played in State Tournament final game These players made their players better around them and took their teams to the State Tournament. Therefore, I believe it should not even be an issue. Those Are Final!
  10. AAA - Ashleigh Newman, Shelbyville AA - Marissa Hensley, Jackson County A - Michelle Snow, Clarkrange Div II -Sarah Baker, Harpeth Hall
  11. It's Dateline that's following them and they've been with this team pretty much all season. They were going to air the special in March or April after the season but from what I hear, they are enjoying the girls so much, they may follow them thru graduation and air it in June or July. This is a special group of young ladies. They excel in the classroom as well as on the court. Even though there are many unfavorable things said about them on this site, they are very well known and liked all across the country. I have friends in Texas and California who keep up with them and try to see them play at least once a year. Say what you will about Shelbyville but there are many college coaches that make several trips year end and year out to that small town just to see their girls play.
  12. AAA: Ashleigh Newman - Shelbyville averaging 19.9 ppg in 22 games - total pts - 437 averaging 9 rebs, 4 steals and 4 assists per game Carried her team in Fuller's absence (13 games); team went 11-2 during that time period and Newman averaged 22ppg during that period....works both ends of the court--offensive and defensive--has signed with Univ of Maryland; ranked All-American; MVP in the state 2003; she will be getting my vote. AA: Laura Hall - for the reasons already mentioned A: still undecided
  13. I'd have to go with: AAA *Ashleigh Newman - Shelbyville (other nominees: Buley - So. Doyle; Clark - MtJ) AA *Laura Hall - Oliver Springs (other nominees: Beechboard - LA; Hensley- Jack Co) A *Mariska Reed-Ezell Harding (other nominees: Cowley- Cascade; Eason -Scott Hill) D-II **Sarah Baker - Harpeth Hall
  14. Shelbyville's Ashleigh Newman - great on offense and defense....
  15. Showtime, don't you think you might be getting a little carried away. You have to be very good, get some breaks, and have a team peak at the right time. At this point Shelbyville has not shown the ability to do any of these. They sure have the ability but they just have not reached that point yet to be that confident in them. I would like to see some cosistency first, with or without Fuller. Apparently, Flemtone hasn't seen Shelbyville play lately. They are coming together and will be peaking at the perfect time--tournament time. Newman has been "unbelieveable" averaging about 21 pts, 9 rebs and 4 steals per game. Snipes has stepped up her game and is averaging about 16 pts per game and will be a perfect compliment to Fuller. Snipes will play the 4 and Fuller the 5. By the way, Fuller returns on Monday. Canon is knocking down the 3 consistently and Houston runs the point like a pro. I'd have to say that Mt Juliet better be glad they played Shelbyville early in the season before the team had come together. It would have been a much different story. Guaranteed!
  16. I'll go with: AAA--Newman-Shelbyville*** --Buley-South Doyle --Fuller-Shelbyville --Broyhill-Sevier Co. AA---Beechboard-Livingston Academy --Hall-Oliver Springs --Hensley-Jackson Co.*** A----??? Div II--??? ***Winners
  17. Say what you want but I bet anyone of you "bashers" would take Sade on your team! I saw her play this past summer with the Nike Team out of Shelbyville. I never saw her lose her temper and Coach Insell had her playing defense. I'm not sure about her high school team but it seemed that the better players playing around her (Fuller, Newman, Hensley, Spann, etc...) made her want to play better defensively and offensively. Maybe she is tired of having to "carry" her high school team. Sometimes it may get tiresome to be the one to have to do it all every game. She didn't have that problem this past summer and she seemed to be happy with that. Keep your head up Sade! You won't have to do it all by yourself when you get to Kentucky either. I'm looking forward to watching you play in college....you are the "real deal"!
  18. 1. Ashleigh Newman--Shelbyville 2. Sade Buley--South Doyle 3. Alex Fuller--Shelbyville 4. Marissa Hensley--Jackson Co. 5. Laura Hall--Oliver Springs 6. Katrina Beechboard--Livingston Academy 7. Tina Broyhill--Sevier Co. 8. Kristen Spann--Lawrence Co. 9. Catie Woods--Lawrence Co. 10. Stephanie Holbrook--Oak Ridge In that order.....
  19. District 8 has to be Ashleigh Newman of Shelbyville -- averaging 21 pts, 7 rebs and 3 steals per game. Lawrence Co--Spann and Woods and Franklin Co--George and Hawkins would get honorable mention also.....
  20. They did go 2-1 at the NIKE Tournament but they were playing the Black Division not the National Division. That is still great to win 2 games there though because almost all the teams there are excellent teams. The teams in the National Division are all Nationally Ranked teams. There are 16 teams in that bracket (including Shelbyville). Shelbyville finished 6th overall in the National brackets. The teams in the Black Division are not ranked nationally. Oak Ridge finished 2nd in the Black Division brackets.
  21. Rumor at the game was that she tore her meniscus...minor injury but she will have to have it scoped sometime in the next week or so...she will be back after Christmas.....Good news for Shelbyville...She was there tonight but didn't play, of course....she did seem in good spirits and is ready to get back out there.
  22. Shelbyville looked great tonight! I was there. Insell took Fuller and Newman out in the 3rd quarter (and they still had 24 and 32 pts, respectively!!!). All of the team contributed to this win. He even played some Freshmen in the 4th qtr and they were scoring. Shelbyville may have found their groove! Also, just a reminder to those who keep asking "What's wrong with Shelbyville". In the 2000-2001 season, Shelbyville lost 5 games before Christmas (if my memory serves me correctly) and still won the State Championship that year. They play as many tough games as possible so they'll be ready for the "Big Dance".
  23. Politics, politics, politics.....Pettus is clearly the best player on the team but to have her start constantly would take points away from other players that Coach Burt wants to "shine". However, when it comes down to the last minute in the game and they need a 3-point shot, Pettus will be the one taking it!
  24. Starting 5: Almader, Canon, Newman, Snipes, Fuller..... They really "have" to start w/Houston at the point....she is pure speed! She is also a playmaker. When she has the ball, you don't know if she's going to drive to the hole or take a jumper. Her speed helps make things happen!
  25. Since no one else will say it, I will.....Insell will not win until he starts playing his "FAB FIVE"--Newman, Fuller, Houston, Bailey and Snipes!!! It's time to stop being "politically correct" and play your best! Shelbyville needs to at least start out with these 5 to get a big lead and then sub in the other ladies. No one can keep up with the speed of these 5. Therefore, no other team could ever get their defense set up against them. "That's my story and I'm sticking to it!" :justwrestle:
