  1. Baylor and McCallie are probably the longest continuous rivalry. MBA and Ryan have played since Ryan opened, but there were a few years in the period where the TSSAA went from 3 classifications to 5 that MBA played AAAAA and Ryan AAAA, and they didn't play.
  2. I would have loved to have seen this thread 50 years ago, when the NIL consisted of 2 AAA divisions, as well as a decent sized AA and A division. Combined with the fact that there was a lot more interest in high school football, it would have been fascinating.
  3. Prayers for him and his family. I always enjoyed his posts.
  4. I don't have any inside information, but my understanding is that the new APSU coach is charismatic and is doing a good job of selling what the program can grow into. Beyond that, Carlton Flatt remains a respected figure at BA, and is an Austin Peay alum.
  5. I was at the Overton-Rhea Co game that Overton won 3-0. It was as tense a game as I've seen in nearly 50 yrs of football. As the game wore on, you knew that a score would end it. Perhaps not as entertaining to some, but exciting in its own way.
  6. For most of us, it just ceased to be enjoyable. I'm perfectly content to argue football with anybody, but typically every thread ends up as a debate on recruiting, financial aid, and our overall inferiority.
  7. BA is a better team. MBA is always very resourceful, and historically is very difficult to beat. They're well-disciplined and well-prepared, and very composed, even when things aren't going well. MBA needed to play a near-flawless game to win. The roughing the punter penalty brought a drive back from the dead: instead of having the ball near midfield, BA keeps the ball and gets a TD. Along the same line, MBA's fumble on the backwards pass was pretty devastating, even though it only led to 3 points. BA is an excellent team. They don't need your help at all. Still, a really great game.
  8. The only penalty in NFHS rules that comes with an automatic first down is roughing (passer, kicker, snapper). The delay was for snapping the ball before the referee signaled read for play.
  9. They simply don't. Pass interference used to, but that was changed 3-4 years ago. Only automatic first down penalties now are the roughing calls: passer, kicker, snapper.
  10. Not sure if it'll be defense, or a mistake. Right now, the difference (as someone else pointed out) is a roughing the kicker penalty. BA can probably absorb a couple of miscues. I don't think MBA can afford any painful penalties, or any turnovers.
  11. I'm very afraid you're right. In my mind, this is very much like MBA-MUS a few years ago. MBA got a few breaks, and had made a stop, but fumbled the punt. BA is the better team in this one. That doesn't guarantee a win, but it cuts the margin for error to almost nothing
  12. BA's given up 10 points in 2 playoff games...maybe it's just really good offensive teams
  13. And recruiting...we gotta bring that up too.
  14. Crap! Now MBA and BA are each 0-1 in the Imaginary Football League.
  15. Your appraisal of the talent on both teams is very accurate. On paper, BA is a better team (and on turf, they were as well). I don't think it's hopeless for MBA, but they will have to play a near flawless game, and catch BA on something short of their best night. It's a possibility; more than one top flight team has come out too tight or too over-confident to play their best. It still seems an awfully long way to drive to play the neighbors, especially in the middle of the week. And let's hope your family holiday gatherings don't break out in a civil war.
  16. A very cogent and reasonable explanation. Understand, I'd love to Maryville play some of the out of state powers because I think it would enhance the reputation of Tennessee high school football. In the same way, I'd love to see them play MBA, Ensworth, and BA, because I think it would be great football. But what so many people gloss over is the fact that the Maryville football program exists to serve the students of Maryville HS first, and the Maryville community a distant second. And if they can make more money by hosting...well, anybody that'll show up, as opposed to a long trip to split a gate, with lesser income, again, we come back to the question, whom is the Maryville football team supposed to support or benefit? I suspect that the gate from a home game is a significant issue in terms of supporting non-revenue producing sports.
  17. "They invited you to their homecoming. That's what they think of you."
  18. I like to think I would qualify as one of those. Speaking for myself, so many of the posts are not about football, but rather are just tirades against the private schools and ad hominems against those of us who support them. It just reached a point where ti wasn't a lot of fun. Perhaps the biggest loss is the departure of the BA posters, who were, to the best of my recollection, without exception the classiest and most incisive posters on here. They knew football, could discuss it objectively, handled their wins with class and their losses with grace. And there are a lot of classy DI posters (like yourself), but they're not generally the ones we see here.
  19. I love the police. I'm a retired cop. But to use Sara Buxton's term, the "biddies in the beauty shop" are pikers compared to us when it comes to gossip. Trust me on this one. And since the defendant is a juvenile, there's unlikely to be much factual evidence coming out on this for some time.
  20. MBA and Ryan never really were part of the jamboree thing when they started about 40 yrs ago. There were several in the area outside Nashville, and the ones involving the Metro public schools. I suspect that Tommy Owen saw a lot of downside to the prospect, with much less upside than he'd get from a regular practice or scrimmage. Also, hard as it may be to believe, in those days, MBA did not have its own buses, so a jamboree had all of the expense of an away game. Mr Carter was very frugal. So I'm not sure I can answer how Ricky would handle the jamboree, although he's not one to take pointless risks. I know that schedules are being made now, and MBA is having the usual issues with finding opponents. I suspect everyone likes the idea of such a game in theory, but in the real world, there are a number of obstacles. If i recall posts from one of the pointless "X is afraid to play Y" threads, in the old district set-up, between district games, playing the other schools in the the county, and the game with Alcoa, there just weren't any dates. And while my guess is that all the coaches would like the game, they'd also want to place it so that it doesn't jeopardize any part of schedule that counts. Speaking solely for me, I think it'd be great to play Maryville, but not in week 8, just before a game with Ensworth, followed by a trip to Chattanooga. And I'm sure the same issues would apply for y'all. At most I get to see Maryville once a year. Beyond the one defensive player who's signed with UT, I don't know how many college prospects that team has. They didn't strike me as being particularly large or imposing in any way...but what incredible poise, and talk about the whole being so much more than sum of the parts. The final against Ravenwood is one of the few games I could actually watch again. Really a great game.
  21. Bear in mind that I don't know George Quarles beyond the fact that he's obviously a great coach, and he strikes me as classy in the extreme. I would think that in his world there are scrimmages and there are scrimmages. It wouldn't be often that he gets to scrimmage a team that could be as good as his (one of the downsides of being not just the best, but considerable better than everybody else). I suspect he would want to let his best players give their best shot, without changing his practice routine and plans (i.e., this is not something you'd "gameplan" extensively). I assume he'd want to let his starters get a good workout, and then "blood" the rest of his team against top competition. That said, it was also really early in the preseason, and he'd be looking a whole lot more at hustle and desire to play than actual performance. If the kids worked hard and were willing to hit, I'd think he'd be satisfied and consider it a good workout. Of course, we're talking about a preseason scrimmage from before last season, so it's hard to imagine anything much more irrelevant.
