  1. Del .... I'll post here since your thread about the program has now been closed. I have a 3A program here beside my laptop (I went to the Marshall Co-Lexington game), and there it is: "Warriors" What's really funny is that the correct nickname is listed with the roster, but "Warriors" is listed in the Booster Club ad that includes the team photo. That's just wrong. ..... Anyway, maybe next Coacht will close that stupid threat about Rocky Top being the most overrated fight song, since it has turned into a "bash UT" thread by something calling itself "stayNskool"
  2. WOW!!! You should open one of those Dionne Warwick places! You hit the nail squarely on the head as Milan won. By a field goal. In OT. .... Must've been a great game. Hey, Galilee. .... I would have loved the opportunity to meet you later on in the playoffs. We had a spirited debate on a post earlier in the year, and I think we both hit on some common ground and made each other think seriously about some things. .... Maybe sometime I could go to Memphis and take a tour of Mitchell's new school. ..... I was in Memphis two years ago to see Union City lose to Mitchell in the second round. That's 0-2 all-time for us against you guys at state.
  3. Well, I was there tonight with my nephew, and we saw a very good game. Both teams were athletic. Later on, listening to one of the radio postgame shows on the way home, we heard the Lexington had some starters out with injuries. .... Both teams put together big scoring drives early in the game, and it looked like it was gonna be a shootout, and it was to an extent with a 31-20 MC win. .... Lex. had its chances. Down 28-20 in the fourth, Lex made a big defensive stand and started moving the ball on offense, but an interception midway through the period killed their chances. Lex could just never get the ball back. MC made a HUGE 3rd-and-9 conversion with a big pass play to keep the drive alive and eventually milked most of the clock and finished it off with a field goal. .... I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Lexington. It was my first game there since the 1988 playoffs when Lex. was Class AA. It was a good game between two good teams, wearing sharp uniforms, which, after all, was the most important thing.
  4. Well, I really hate to say it b/c I've got good friends at these places, but all three teams in Obion County had subpar seasons. First year since 1990 that at least one team didn't make the playoffs. Obion Central was coming off a first-ever playoff win the year before with high hopes but finished 2-8 and was the opponent when Gibson County broke a 38-game losing streak. South Fulton started 4-0 and was ranked in Class 1A but then lost its last six games. Union City was expected to rebound somewhat from a 2-8 season the year before but instead finished 3-7 and blew a playoff chance with a loss to Dresden in Week 10. .... Here's hoping my three favorite teams make this season the exception rather than the rule, beginning with offseason winter workouts, carrying over to spring practice and then going all the way through the 2005 campaign. ...... A quick side note: Anyone who has the chance next season, go check out SF's fancy new stadium. It's very nice. One thing is definitely NOT a disappointment about Obion County football: All three schools rank among the best in Tennessee in terms of facilities. Three FANTASTIC stadiums.
  5. Well, I knew Murray would be getting a new coach next year, but I thought the frontrunner was a Mayfield assistant (can't remember his name) So, it will be interesting if Murray upgrades its schedule on par with a very tough Mayfield sked. Having Liberty on it this year was a good step, but I don't really think Fisher knew what he was getting into when he made that call a couple of years ago, or he would have tried to get Trinity instead. (Sorry, Trinity fans. I apologize for dissing ya.) I would love to see Murray and Union City play. ..... My bro and I have talked about this a little. We have mentioned the idea of a Graves County-Obion County one-day, two-game shootout every year with Union City playing Mayfield and Obion Central playing Graves County with the games used as season-openers each year and alternating between Mayfield, UC and OC fields (Mfield and GC currently share). But, I think an Obion County-Calloway County deal would be good, too, with UC playing Murray and OC playing Calloway. Every year at Murray State University's Stewart Stadium. ..... What was this thread about again?!??
  6. While some people might be surprised by an FA win, considering it was a No. 3 beating a No. 2, I really wasn't. .... LC is much better this year than recent years, but still might be a year or two away from being a deep playoff contender. I'm looking forward to watching that program get back to where it once was b/c in the 1970s, 1980s and even the early 1990s, that was one fine program. .... FA has a very tough option game and some good talent. Ya know, lst year, Reg. 7-1A won all four of its playoff matchups with 8-1A. The 7-1A region is just a little stronger from top to bottom right now. That should change in due time. .... Oh, and just a quick note to "lakecountyfalconfan" who is sure to post on this thread: Believe me when I say that I'm not disrespecting Lake County. I have a lot of respect for that program. I'm just looking at the situation from, shall we say, a less opinionated perspective.
  7. As will be the case throughout the state next week, we've got some really good second-round matchups in West Tennessee. I'm torn between going to Martin to see Westview vs. Milan or heading to Brownsville to see Haywood vs. Ridgeway. So, fans of those teams, give me reasons why I should go to see your games this week. Thanks in advance for the info. ..... Also, any other fans who wanna try to convince me to head out somewhere else, feel free to chime in.
  8. Well, I hope Tenn. High and Maryville make it to the semifinals, b/c I'm planning on being there with my brother and his two sons. We're gonna catch the M'ville-Tenn game on Friday night and the UT-UK football game on Sat. Which will be more competitive??? .... As far as Melrose, they're tough to beat in Orange Mound. BTW: Check out Melrose's gold shoes some of the players wear. As I understand it, you have to be able to run 4.6 or better in the 40 to get a pair. Some linemen wear them. Athletic? You dang right! .... Looking forward to the 4A StateTitle game (I'll be there, too!)
  9. I wish all Tenn. schools would play football. Anybody up for petitioning the TSSAA to start a 7- or 8-man league for the state's smaller schools?
  10. I've heard a variation on the coach and the official. The coach was a prominent head coach in West Tenn. in the 1970s and got so mad at an official that he just let the poor zebra have it. After walking off about three unsportsmanlike penalties, the ref turns to the coach as said, "I can walk as long as you can talk." The coach then shut up. As far as announcers, in this NW corner of our great state, a TV guy regularly has players crossing the 50, the 55 and the 60 before finally catching himself. He also calls some penalties as "technical fouls."
  11. This is always a fun district, regular season and postseason. Remember last year: OC beat UC for one of its five(?) wins. Size is UC's biggest concern, but they'll run you out of the gym if you let'em. Westview is ATHLETIC (caught a bit of their opening practice), and all the teams will be competitive. .... It'll be fun again.
  12. Gleason's new gym does look nice. On a business trip a few weeks ago, I stopped in to take a look. Its good and big, much like South Fulton's. .... I like the old-style feel of Lake County's. .... Greenfield's has that same feeling, but it's way too cramped. They have enough room outside to knock down a wall or two and really expand for more floor space, locker rooms, offices, etc. See how easy that is?? Just knock down some walls.
  13. Union City used to have a student section known as the Do-Rights. Very loud. Very proud. Hope that tradition comes back someday.
  14. That'll be a great scrimmage. What a regular season all-day event that would make, right?!? .... Some of the best basketball talent in the country can always be found in the Bluff City.
  15. Substate game. 1990. A sophomore named Stanley Caldwell hits a tip-in at the buzzer to give Union City the win and a trip to the AA state tournament. Led by Caldwell, who would be named the tournament MVP, UC goes on to win its first-ever state title. UC would go on to win again in 1992 and 1997. That tip-in started UC's run as the AA Team of the 1990s.
  16. I agree with FBGirl ... It's all about money .... Get ready for an open playoffs in the near future, where every team in the state gets in (every basketball team gets to play in the district tournaments, right??). Then, you could get rid of strict regions, enforce a loose version of region play (based on miles traveled) and then seed the teams based on record. .... Oh yeah. The T$$AA will get 30 percent rght off the top of all gate money collected.
  17. Well, from the NW corner of Tennessee, I'm already making plans to travel east over the T-giving holidays to catch the Tennessee-Maryville semifinal game on Friday night, get a little shut-eye and then come back for the Vols-KittyCats on Sat. night. .... So, don't y'all disappoint me by getting upset in an early round. ... Then again, I could just go watch Alcoa.
  18. With all due respect to Camden, and with a shout-out to the great job done there this season, I have to cast my 2A vote for DON COADY of Martin Westview. He took a team that was 1-9 last year and lost its first two games this season to an 8-2 record and championship of Region 7-2A. .... By the way, Kevin Ward was a Coady assistant. So, technically, Coady is 17-3 so far this season.
  19. Well, if I wanna go watch a playoff game next week, I'll have to leave the Obion County limits to do it. For the first time since 1990 (I'm pretty sure), none of Obion County's three teams are in the playoffs. Union City was the county's last hope and looked in good shape with a 14-0 lead in the first half only to lose 27-14 to Dresden. .... So, I might have to cross into Weakley County, Gibson County, Dyer County or Lake County. Or, maybe down to Madison or Crockett. Or, perhaps cross the state line into Kentucky. Maybe I'll go east of the Tennessee. Or, maybe I'll just stay home. Id there TV on Friday nights.
  20. Semifinals easy. After that, it'll be fun to watch.
  21. Ok, I'm not trying to burst your bubble b/c Liberty should be very proud of its big win tonight. .... but, a couple of facts: Murray was ranked No. 2 in their own district with its only loss coming to that district champion. Murray's only loss was to Mayfield, a traditional Ky. power but just 2-5 when they played each other. ... I was at that game. Believe me, Murray wasn't too impressive. .... Tonight, I went to see Paducah Tilghman vs. Hopkinsville, and niether team was very impressive even though both are supposed to be strong 4A programs ..... Ky. football, for the most part, does not compare with Tn. football ..... But, again, I'm not trying to take anything away from Liberty. It was a big win, and Liberty people should be very proud.
  22. OK, its time for someone to close this thread since you people absolutely refuse to stay on topic.
  23. Union City M.S. will play American Way at Memphis on Saturday afternoon for the West Sectional title. ..... All I have to say is this: Drop To Class 1A + Colton Speed = Future State Title(s) for UCHS. thumb
  24. When did this stop being a H.S. football site about a college fight song used at high school games and start being a Hate UT thread?? Just curious. .... If you don't like UT, fine, but take it to the SEC Rivals boards and keep it off of here. .... BACK TO THE FRIGGIN' TOPIC -- Yes, it is an overused and possibly over-rated fight song, for high schools. Maybe that's because virtually every state band -- from the big, national competition bands to the little pee-shooter bands with 40 kids -- try to play it. As far as I'm concerned, the only place for Rocky Top to be played is at a UT game by the Pride of the Southland Band. Now, about those lyrics .....
