  1. Huge game for Gallatin in my opinion. There hasn't been a Wave team start 0-2 since 1966, when that team lost their first four games in Coach Barron's debut year as head coach. This team must cut down on the penalties and special teams mistakes to have any hope of success. It's always been said that a team improves the most between the first and second game, and I'm sure the coaching staff will work very hard this week towards that end. We are planning our dinner stop at the famous Catfish House, our first trip there. All you regulars out there, will 5:30 be early enough to get there and still have plenty of time to make the 7:00 kickoff?
  2. Season opening games are always somewhat a mystery going in, but this year's opening game is that way more than ever before in my opinion. The last two Wave scrimmages were definitely not pretty, but they were obviously up against two of the state's best. While Wilson Central may be improved, I'm sure they are not at the talent level of Riverdale or Ensworth. The Wave played well and held their own in an earlier Blackman scrimmage, and you like their chances of being 1-0 after tomorrow night if they play at that level. All indications point to a close game, so one little thing here or there could go a long way in deciding the outcome. Remember to get there early, there will be a dedication ceremony before the game, renaming the field to Calvin Short Field.
  3. Definitely not a lot of positives in this scrimmage. The defense made a few plays here and there, and the offense mostly looked out of sync the whole afternoon. It was a good clean scrimmage though, much different than this same Tuesday last year!
  4. I had heard before the season that Coach Alexander was interested, but don't know how true that was. He has a son on the team and two more "future Wave" sons, his wife works here at the hospital, and they live here. He was actually an assistant here several years ago. He would definitely be an excellent choice.
  5. As the season progressed this year, I could see this game coming, I just didn't know if it would be round 2 or 3. The Wave's 35-10 dominating win on October 7th over the Commandos was special, but it really means nothing now. I see this game being very different, but the outcome hopefully being the same. I think Gallatin is definitely the better team, but they will have to play the entire game at a high level this week, not just the second half, to get this win. Obviously Hendersonville will bring a bunch more than the 10-15 visiting fans we saw last week, and the level of excitement and intensity will be at a much higher level. Let's hope we can ride that level of excitement into a quarterfinal matchup against another Sumner County team! I did some looking back, and this will be the 11th time (at least back through the 1950's) that the Wave has played a team twice in the same season. Only two times (Springfield in 1977 and Jackson Central-Merry in 1989) have the Wave won both games. Let's make Friday night number three!
  6. Whatever the handbook says, if you watch the "seeding the teams in quadrants" video on the T$$AA website, it makes it very clear that district winners and runner-ups will be seeded higher than the other teams in the quads. Antioch has already clinched its district championship, so it will be seeded higher than all the other teams who didn't win their district. The only way Gallatin wins their district is if they win out and Mt. Juliet loses out. The 1st is a definite possibility, but the 2nd definitely won't happen. Unless Columbia gets bumped back over to Quad 3, Antioch will be the #1 seed in the quad. Like it or not, you can blame the Brentwood-Franklin situation from last year that caused this new wrinkle to be put in this year.
  7. I believe Gallatin will take care of business in a hurry, and you will see a lot of players getting playing time in the second half. How early in the second half remains to be seen, with the Wave coming off an open week they will need to use this game to get warmed up for Beech and hopefully a long playoff run. I don't see a repeat of last year's game that was relatively close throughout. Smith is a tremendous athlete and I hope to see him play defense, return punts or kickoffs, and even play offense at another position, but I'm not sure we'll see him return to QB. Carnes has played extremely well and seems to have established himself in the QB position. Hopefully we'll see Smith's talents utilized in a number of other positions on the field. Go Big Green, let's get these next two games, finish at 9-1, then let the playoff seeding fall where it falls.
  8. There would have to be 8 5A teams qualify from districts 13-16 for Henry County not to be put in Quad 4. As of last week, there were only 5, and there is no way 3 more will qualify. Henry County is easily the furthest west team from middle Tenneseee, so they will be heading west along with however many Clarksville schools qualify and are needed to make 8 teams.
  9. Looks like a perfect night weather-wise for a great football game. What a night it should be! Go Big Green!
  10. 7:00 kickoff. We plan on getting there early. Go Wave!
  11. Glad you saw it the same as me, "Bear". No doubt next Friday night will be a dandy. Better get there early!
  12. Everything else aside, someone please explain what they saw on Brentwood's last offensive play that was a bad call. The ball is coming toward the receiver, goes over his head, and we hit him a split second after it goes past him. As a defender, you have to hit and hopefully tackle the receiver if he catches it. The Brentwood receiver missed it, and he took a lick because he might have caught it. If you watch much football at all, you see this same thing all the time. Where's the bad call? I saw a great football game between two very good teams, and I think both coaching staffs did a great job. The Wave made the plays they needed to win the game, period. All the junk aside, it's great to be 6-0!
  13. Kickoff has been moved to 7:30 to help accomodate Brentwood's transportation issues. Hopefully everybody will come on early like it's really at 7 and get in before kickoff. A lot of fans showed up all at the same time about 6:45 last Friday night and missed a good bit of the 1st half. Homecoming is a fun week but brings with it its share of distractions. Gallatin will have to start this game better than last Friday night, or it could be a long night. No doubt if the Wave play like they can though, they could make it a long night for the Bruins. I look for them to remember what happened last year, stay focused this week, and take care of business Friday night. Go Big Green!
  14. I have seen many Wave games since I was a little guy back in the mid 70's (in fact, most of them!), and I would have to say this one ranks right up there with the best of the best, exspecially in regular season games. It had a little bit of everything! This team not only is very talented, but also appears to be very hungry and plays with a great deal of heart, guts and determination, ingredients that are all necessary for a team to contend for a state championship. Hopefully we continue rolling towards that this Friday!
  15. If I have understood everything correctly, the suspensions are over. Everybody should be back, except of course for Tremaine.
  16. It is actually set for 6:30 at the Wave Yard with the freshmen first.
  17. The Smyrna scrimmage is on Tuesday, August 9th at Gallatin's practice field. The Riverdale scrimmage is actually a jamboree type event with the Freshman, Varsity and JV all playing halves. It is scheduled for August 12th, 6:30 at the Waveyard.
  18. My picks: 1. Gallatin 2. Mt Juliet 3. Beech 4. Station Camp 5. Hendersonville 6. Lebanon 7. Wilson Central 8. Portland The Wave should have one of their best teams in a good while and could make a deep playoff run. Mt Juliet and Beech both will be good and contend for the title. Station Camp will be improved while Hendersonville looks to be down from last year. Pretty much status quo it looks like for Lebanon, Wilson Central and Portland. Season starts in a little over 7 weeks, it should be an exciting one!
  19. Some interesting news: Gallatin has hired a new offensive coordinator. He is Mark Williams, who was in the same position at Smyrna. He was an assistant at Gallatin for 3 years back in the early 2000's, and will no doubt bring some excitement to the Green Wave. Looks like an excellent hire!
  20. Gallatin at Lebanon on January 11th postponed, not sure if makeup date has been set yet.
  21. Gallatin: Aug 19 at Wilson Central Aug 26 Springfield Sept 2 at Lebanon Sept 9 at Oakland Sept 16 Station Camp Sept 23 Brentwood Sept 30 at Mt Juliet Oct 7 Hendersonville Oct 14 Open Oct 21 at Portland Oct 28 Beech
  22. The tenth game has been set. Gallatin is at Oakland in Week 3.
