  1. Here's my opinion Bass... you are right, but half right. Rang was handed a loaded team, but also did a masterful job of motivating and instructing his athletes. I watched them completely dismantle a very, very good Wayne County team with discipline, scheme, and precision on both sides of the ball. The only meaningful score the Wildcats managed was on a long sideline bomb that Rice dropped in the bucket to his receiver in stride with the DB a half step behind, and he just outran him to the end zone. One play. The rest of the game was a beatdown of one of the best three or four 1A teams in the state, and then they went on to Cookeville and blasted Greenback. The only knock I've ever heard on Rang was two years after he was gone when some of the Dresden folks said that the negative behavior that imploded their Lions this past season was tolerated while he was there also... I saw them play three games in his final year there, and on not one play did I see anything of the sort. If Rang is chosen, Trousdale will get a fine coach who can punch up their offense to a level that could get them back to the pinnacle in a hurry. Whether he would stay or not nobody could guess, but in my eyes, TC is a destination, not a step toward one.
  2. I love it RR… when it was public's griping about privates, these same people took the high road with " just strap it up and play". Go back and read some of the infinitesimal details and complex formulas devised to keep away from BA and Ensworth. #justplay
  3. To me, it's just professional courtesy to keep the applicant list out of the public, and to allow the new coach to handle publicizing the hire. It's not just where you go to, it's where you leave from as well, and just about any good coach would want the news to break to their current team eye to eye, and from the horses mouth. Not blaming anyone (least of all the paper... that's what they do), but it's a shame that all those kids who have relationships with their coaches are now playing the waiting game to see if their guy is abandoning them. Not the end of the world, but it could have been avoided.
  4. Maybe you can go watch them jailhouse fellers team on Friday nite Roy, and then go to Griders game Saturday.
  5. Perfectly worded!!! Lots of people take too much offense when fans "gripe" about the officiating. I too have seen plenty of capable officials, and games which were called correctly... the misconception is that the grumbling stems from a dislike of all officials, when in fact the majority of them do a pretty good job. The "problem" is the lack of accountability from the administration for those who are less than adequate.
  6. I'm aware of your history, and how good y'all have been recently. With that, and the fact that Lausanne looks to be "rebuilding", I just stuck to some factual information. Mayfield looks to be getting into a series with the Lynx at the perfect time... in their previous two seasons, even the mighty Cardinals would have had a rough time keeping the game close IMO. Lausanne is a relatively new school, and has risen to power in a hurry, so I'd say that they will "find a way" to fill the roster with players. Wishing you guys well against them, I have to root for a small school against what Lausanne has done... nothing illegal, but the co-op thing, and recruiting from all of Memphis just give too much advantage against small public schools, so good luck against the beast!
  7. I don't expect perfection. I expect an honest effort and professional behavior. Human error will always happen, and sometimes just the judgement of the official comes into play, and I can readily accept that. You're wrong about the money though. I (like your son) wouldn't consider becoming an official, but your son and myself aren't the only two prospective officials out in the world. I'd never consider crawling around on the bottom of the river picking mussels out of the mud, but when the market was good, lots of people did... when the money went away, they found other jobs.
  8. I'll go you one better LOD. I'd say that the vast majority of programs wouldn't come out of a complete audit with lily white fingers, mostly because of your before mentioned ignorance. After an intensive audit of our Ag. program (because of theft by an advisor), we chose to revamp policies and retrain our coaches and school finance dept. in order to comply with current regulations. No "wrongdoing" was suspected, nor any athletic programs audited, but after some eye opening details about some little known LAWS regarding fundraising, affiliated (chartered) booster clubs, and minors actually being in possession of the money came to light, it was clear that the "honor system" is a thing of the past, and that if you error, it needs to be on the side of caution.
  9. OK, you had me worried for the entire top line. Good one though!!!
  10. Raise the pay and hold them accountable. If the money is there, people will be there to take it, that part is simple. The second part would be the hard part... a significant pay increase, with deductions applied from their governing body would be a great start. Some of the calls/behavior within the last week in 14AA would be good examples, but since everyone hasn't witnessed them, a better one would be the non pass interference call in the Saints/Rams game. Allow the coach to protest the call if on tape (I'm assuming that almost everyone films their games), and have it reviewed. Calls grossly missed or non professional behavior could be assigned a deduction in the ref's pay. Just a money would help attract new officials, money could produce a little better effort, and personally, that's all that I'm asking for.
  11. And who raised and handled it. Accounts directly attached to school affiliated programs and those to booster clubs have different regulations... can't be too careful.
  12. In everyone's opinion (with maybe the exception of Ryne Sandburg's family). Banks was special.
  13. Not from UC, so I can't speak on the game between them and the Cardinals. As for Lausanne, they are a private school from Memphis... they have been one of the better teams statewide for the past two seasons, but will graduate their star running back (Eric Gray), so could fall off some this next season.
  14. Yes and no. Around this area, I can tell you the "bad" tendencies of the ref's before the game starts. When you walk into the gym and see who is calling, and know beforehand the type of calls, unprofessional behavior, or in some instances, which team will be favored, there's a problem that could be resolved with some structure. One in particular ( I never do names ) will assert himself as the center of attention in more games than not, and will probably issue more than double the amount of technical fouls than the next high person per year. Another will almost without fail, at some point during the game, completely disengage from the action and argue with some fan(s) for a long period of time, yet rarely ever issues a technical. Others also have "pet" fouls like blocking on a screen... two come to mind, with one calling the contact a blocking foul regardless of position, and ironically, the other will call an offensive foul or push, even if the defender causes contact while moving forward. The structure I spoke of would involve the chain of command. Some of the worst cases of these examples listed have occurred with the official who evaluates the performance of our regions officials in the stands to no avail. I'm not an official, but have called several junior league games in the past... I know how difficult it is to refrain from reacting to the fans, to call only what you see, and to be in position to see the action. I'm not an expert, and have no desire to be one... having said that, I do know the difference between human error and misinterpretation of rules, and professional and non professional behavior. I'm also not a butcher, but I know a good steak when I see one.
  15. That was his quote, I was being more general and not specific to Lipscomb.
  16. Sounds to me as if you understand just fine, especially on the last scenario... there's no such thing as "over the back", with no consequential contact, there's no foul. Block/charge calls are the worst... around here any movement constitutes a "block", even if the defender is giving ground and the ball handler runs directly over them. My biggest gripe is with being consistent. ticky-tac touch fouls for two or three trips, then knock downs on screens and hacks across shooting arms are let go. Also, if one team has significantly more fouls per half and the crowd calls attention to it, seems as if it becomes a priority to "even up" the fouls.
  17. I do agree with the last statement... honor between administrations and coaches isn't as common as it should be anymore, and that's most places. I also agree that Dilfer is completely untested and unproven, but would expect any reasonable person to acknowledge that the potential to rapidly change the culture there with him could maybe be matched by only a GQ, Rankin, or maybe Bowers announcement (other than some other NFL QB with a ring). Whether he can coach or not will be evident soon enough.
  18. So, if you're going to ride the fence I'll ask the question... hypothetically, if you had the power to do the hiring, would you have hired him?
  19. You either are or you're not... all schools are "open zone" until their respective board of control votes otherwise. Any and all exceptions to being totally closed designate you as open zone. BPM knows his stuff!
  20. They only have one or two coachT'ers, and they are classy guys... they won't take to this type of thing either.
  21. The poster said that he had already told "his guys" that he was leaving... if you haven't heard, he's just blowing smoke.
