  1. Cat and mouse game. One of the intriguing aspects of wrestling. Will there be some surprises Friday? Will showers magically appear at the Palace? Can anyone beat Cleveland or Baylor? Will there ever be a serious discussion about a venue change? Will officials blend in to the matches or determine them? Come on down and check it out!!
  2. Are conspicuously absent from this board and from any website. Shame since at least two of the top overall teams in the state are there. Can someone close to the sport perhaps take over the reigns and take a stab? Or even make some predictions?
  3. Just the facts baby. Just the facts: Early December. Baylor 34, Father Ryan 27. Baylor 8 wins, 10 bonus points ( 3 pins at 126, 195, 285, 1 Major at 170). Forfeited at 106 and 182 Ryan 4 wins, 3 bonus points (pin at 113) and 2 wins by forfeit Both teams may well look quite different tomorrow night, looking toward peaking for States in 2 wks. Both teams work hard, are well coached, and will compete hard. Head over to McCallie for a good show tomorrow. A Double Dual in the 'nooga..... 5:30 Father Ryan vs Baylor. MBA vs McCallie 7 approx. Father Ryan vs McCallie. MBA vs Baylor

HIXSON Congratulations to all the wrestlers on a great tournament. Hopefully in future years the Ryan Invitational can move to late December to make it easier to attract top teams from a wider area and avoid scheduling conflicts with schools and other tournaments. It is a very well run tournament, on time, finals under the spotlight, approx 48 years running.
  5. Keep it clean fellas. Truly no need for the owners of opinions to be declared as idiots. Should someone think that someone else's opinions are idiotic, that's fine. But it doesn't make their owner an idiot. Semantics?.....maybe, but courtesy and decency should prevail. I personally enjoy IMMENSELY the rankings and handicapping that transpires on this board. What I would really like to see, though, is an off the record agreement for the D1 AAA and the D2 dual state champions to wrestle in an "exhibition" match at the end of the state individual tournament. The politics and the logistics will likely never allow it to happen, but who wouldn't have wanted to see Baylor wrestle Cleveland at the end of last year? Or Christian Bros and Cleveland in '13. Everybody keeps their championships.....just one more match for the kids. Or as far as that goes, even include a second exhibition for the individual champs. Much more difficult to pull off. Fantasyland, yes. But why not? it's Christmas!!
  6. Congratulations to Father Ryan for representing TN on their duals title at Moeller this past weekend. All the banter now makes for cheap entertainment, but means very little in the overall scheme of things. Having seen TN wrestling for only five years now, what I like seeing lately is that the stronger teams are actually wrestling each other without regard to public / private. Didn't happen five years ago. Also, while December matches may be tune ups for many, they are certainly significant to these boys wrestling in them. This is a pure, difficult and demanding sport. It demands respect for EVERY match, including those in December. Football, injury, weight control, wrestling up, whatever. Credit due for every score on the board. Period. I will say this.....every high school wrestling fan should get to Cleveland for Saturday's Duals. What a POWERFUL lineup. And as for rankings, they are fun to handicap. But if early performance is any indicator, the lower half of Father Ryan's lineup paired with the upper half of Baylor's.......now THAT'S a murderers row. Best of luck to all teams Saturday... And is it just me or do the Archer kids all (not just the Bullard boys) look like they could be brothers? Like a gaggle of geese one after another after another, one just a bit bigger than the last. Holy dynasty Batman!!

  8. Ok. I will go first. DII only Father Ryan over BA. MBA over St Benedict McCallie over Christian Bros. Baylor over Briarcrest. Semis 730 Friday. Ryan over MBA. Baylor (with 113 and 195 back) over McCallie Final. 7 pm Saturday. Ryan over Baylor. Come on out and enjoy some good wrestling!!
  9. What fun reading all the scrapping this morning! Sure beats cleaning up the garage! Great atmosphere for wrestling last night. And while most of the posts and posters seem to be both knowledgeable and passionate, we could do without some of the personal attacks. The kids work very hard. Coaches work hard. And yes, champstrain, the officials work hard. All of us watch matches with our tinted glasses on. And officials know that most every close call they make is wrong with half the gym. That's just how it is. And yes, sometimes they get it wrong. But much more often they get it right. We all get unlimited looks on every call using whatever digital media we choose, rewinding and forwarding countless replays. Great for fans, but...... The official gets one look in real time. Cut him some slack. The two calls generating all the rage in the 138 and 182 matches can be debated in favor of either side. The fact that the calls were made, not passed on, is evidence that the official was involved, engaged and focused. And Sommers, disregard the personal rants of those few folks hiding behind the anonymity of their board names to disparage all you do to promote educational athletics. I for one appreciate you.
  10. Can someone post a link to the site that will be streaming the Baylor McCallie match?
  11. Can someone post a link to the site that will stream the Baylor/McCallie match Friday night?
  12. Simple solution. ONE TOURNAMENT!! (Wishful thinking I know) Last year we had two boys wrestling tournaments here in Tennessee. Somehow in Division 1, the FINAL score was 78-4. And somehow, in Division II, a team draws a bye and is in the semi finals. That, to me, suggests that there is something grossly inadequate about the process. Taking nothing away from the successes that any teams had over the course of a long season.......there is absolutely somethIng flawed with the system. And the answer from TSSAA? Let's have not two, but THREE tournaments!! Wow. And just for kicks, let's have the same top 4-6 seeds (specifically in Division II) wrestle each other three Saturdays in a row. Crazy. Someone needs to seize control and give us a meaningful and exciting process. Tennessee needs a tournament that will draw FANS and not just parents. The current system does not do that. I understand the reasons behind the separation of public and private (DI and DII) schools for state tournament purposes. And yet the coaches seem to be more and more willing to bridge that abyss, evidenced by Wilson Central's double dual with Father Ryan and Baylor, the Cleveland duals, the McCallie Invitational, etc. If coaches can make it happen, why can't TSSAA? Just a rant from someone who didn't know the sport four years ago. Have become a huge fan.
  13. Pool play yesterday. Goal was five matches for every wrestler. Mostly achieved. Gold, Silver and Bronze bracketed tourney today based on pool results. Head out to Father Ryan for a great day of high school wrestling today. Should be much fun. Finals under the lights scheduled for late this afternoon. Cmon down!!
  14. Schedule for the opening season DII rankings?
  15. Weigh ins at 5. Wrestling at 6 Wilson Central will wrestle Baylor and Ravenwood Father Ryan will wrestle Ravenwood and Wilson Central Per the schedule. Should be some great matches!! Skate on over to Wildcat Drive!
  16. The battle of the two Purple Mist programs is absolutely on for Sunday at 2 pm at Father Ryan. The intent is for it to become a season opening home and home alternating series going forward. Will be great to see two strong programs in this opening week match. Come on out to see the new Patrick Simpson Wrestling Facility at FRHS and see some good grappling. Three mats.....varsity....jv......middle school. Big fun. The purple Bros graduated many but are sure to be solid, and the Purple Irish are looking to avenge their last match from last year's DII state duals. Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
  17. Thanks Hamm for taking on both D1 and DII rankings. It looks as though the DI and DII programs may cross paths a few times this year. Baylor going to Wilson Central and Father Ryan going to Cleveland for dual matches. Father Ryan also will be wrestling Wilson Central / Ravenwood. Should be a fun year with some strong programs to follow. Thanks to Hamm for taking on the challenge!
  18. Suggest calling Bradley and Cleveland AD to confirm who is invited and who has confirmed. Hopefully both will be strong fields!!
  19. How did it ever come about that there are actually FOUR state tournaments? Two for public schools and two for private schools based on size. Ok fine. But a state tournament with only seven teams? That's what this year's Division II was. And a Division II "invitational" ? Wow. The fact that ANY team, not just this year's Wilson Central squad, can get to a state championship match and look like an inferior opponent is an indictment of the tournament, not a team. The fact that a team could conceivably draw a bye, win two matches and be declared a state champion is a dilution of the concept of state champion (possible in both DII tourneys). Perhaps it is not reasonable to have a single state champion in Tennessee as is the case in many states, but what wrestling fan wouldn't love to have seen a Christian Brothers vs. Cleveland match this year? Or a Father Ryan vs. Wilson Central match? Wrestling in Tennessee is getting stronger year by year, and as it grows, there are certainly going to be growing pains. We need a better state tournament, with better lighting, better promotion and better administration. Not a criticism but an observation. Tennessee Wrestling can be special. We have dedicated coaches and wrestlers. They deserve a state tournament worthy of their season-long efforts.
  20. My fearless predictions for tonight's Baylor / CBHS semifinal 106 Murphy fall over whomever replaces Tidswell. Bay 6 113 Oliver major over Canada Bay 6-4 120 Santi the senior over Powell in a close one. CBHS 7-6 126 Gray major over Standefer. CBHS 11-6 132 Brunner fall over Croom. Bay 12-11 138 Holloway over Whittman. Bay 15-11 145 Parish over Sutherland 2OT. Bay 15-14 152 Baker fall over whomever. Garron? CBHS 20-15 160 Popp over Hataway. CBHS 20-18 170 Walthall over phenom Parker. Sr experience. CBHS 23-18 182 Clements over Edwards in a real battle CBHS 23-21 195 McGolgan over Norred. CBHS 26-21 220 Brandon over Schmissrtr. CBHS 29-21 285 Armstrong over Thomas. CBHS 32-21 Senior laden Brothers just too much for a young Baylor team. Unless Baylor gets bonus points from top guys, but a few Baylor kids need a couple more weeks to shake off the mat rust. Should be a great match! Winner looks to face the IRISH in what could be an all purple final !
  21. SRETSO SPORTS DII PREDICTIONS: Quarterfinals Father Ryan over Brentwood Academy McCallie over St Benedict Christian Bros over MBA Baylor bye SEMIFINALS Father Ryan over McCallie---closer than many think Christian Brothers over Baylor---also closer than many think FINALS----- Father Ryan over Christian Brothers in a classic, intense match. Be there!!!
  22. DII Dec 17 identical to Dec 10? Not even one change?
  23. Simply put. These wrestlers and their parents, friends and fans deserve better. Referees did yeoman's work in managing both the action on the mat AND off. They took it upon themselves to keep action moving on mats, going so far as to announce matches themselves in the glaring absence of tournament workers. The concept of this tourney is exceptional. A high level LOCAL tourney for middle Tennessee schools designed to attract all the top teams for a great day of competition. The only people who lived up to their responsibilities were the wrestlers and the officials. As a family member and supporter of one of the varsity wrestlers, and having attended dozens of these multi-school tourneys over the past few years, I can honestly say that the TWO most poorly run were this year's and last year's "Grand Championships". I hope we can find a replacement on the schedule for next year.
  24. 27 years as an official. After reading and re-reading this thread I see one glaring error. CONSISTENCY. For good officials it truly is our only goal. To CONSISTENTLY apply the rules while doing our best to insure the safety of all participants. To make the calls CONSISTENTLY from the first whistle to the last. To tighten or loosen the application of rules during a contest is the single, and really the ONLY, legitimate complaint that a participant, coach or fan can have. And simply put, the 160# DII finals match was NOT CONSISTENTLY OFFICIATED. Period. To pass on making a call (or calls) early does NOT make it ok to make that call later. Similar plays require similar calls. Time, score and situation are magnified over the course of a contest. Therefore, if a rule interpretation is applied early, that same rule interpretation must be applied later. After reading the majority of the posts in this thread, it is very obvious that WHATEVER side of this fence one sits, the fact that rules were not applied consistently turned out having a decisive impact on this match. And while a legitimate argument can be made that a takedown determined the outcome, an equally legitimate argument can be made that the winning takedown never should have happened. My congratulations to both kids, who fought their hearts out. Truth be told---they both went to sleep Saturday night as champions.
