  1. This is a great question. It would definitely have been fun if these two guys coached at big time schools in a state where football is a higher priority, then it is in Tennessee. I don’t think it has a simple answer, though. They are both outstanding football coaches. I think you can truly make an argument for either one. That’s a boring answer, but it’s just my opinion.
  2. Been a crazy couple weeks in Maury County. Columbia Central high school fired their head coach, Jason Hoath, the first day after dead period, and now he’s been officially hired by their crosstown rival Spring Hill high school. That now makes 3 former coaches from Columbia Central that have been hired at Spring Hill the last few days, and reportedly a 4th coach is considering the opportunity to leave Columbia for Spring Hill. When they play at the end of season, this will sure create some extra drama. What is the deal in Maury County? Anybody know the story? 3. Thank you! I know some of the guys I mentioned have already been named but I think those guys can’t be mentioned enough times.
  4. I love it. Never too early for a preseason ranking. Already looking forward to next season. A lot of changes in 5A and 6A should make for an interesting season to watch play out.
  5. My apologies to Ron King. He is definitely a good coach. That Fairview program is always a tough out and they clearly do a good job getting the most out of their kids at a small school with less kids.
  6. I’m definitely on board with figuring out a better way to police recruiting. It’s a bigger problem then people would probably be willing to admit. This state is so big and has so many schools, that it would be a challenge figuring out how to do it, though.
  7. That’s a good question. I’m sure people don’t like Oakland much right now for the same reasons people don’t like Maryville and Alcoa.
  8. His teams might have had discipline problems at the last school he coached, but that was in another state and circumstances might be completely different at Blackman, for all we know. That is if he even had any major discipline issues at all. Regardless, allow the guy to have time to grow and learn, and he might prove to get better in this area and have a really clean program at Blackman. I’m really intrigued by this guy. I think the key will be allowing him to have a fair amount of time to fully implement his style, culture, attitude, etc. It will be a big change from the previous head coach. As long he proves that they are making strides and slowly improving, Blackman has to allow him to have the time to grow and build the program back up. It won’t get fixed overnight. It paid off for Riverdale. Also, hopefully he gets the chance to completely look the staff over and choose exactly who he wants across the board. He needs to be able to have coaches he knows and can trust working with him and helping build the program back up. Lastly, Blackman needs to understand and accept the fact that Oakland is really far ahead of them right now and just focus on building up your own program. Don’t compare yourself to them or worry about that stuff. At least in the short term, you’re not going to beat them. That’s okay.
  9. I think they’ll be a darn good team this coming season. Freshman teams have been solid to good the last couple years. They should be able to finish second and give Oakland a solid challenge. I think it’s tough to expect them to beat Oakland this year, but a competitive game where they lose by 10-17 would still be a good showing against that program right now. Regardless, Kriesky and his staff have done a fantastic job building that program back up and they are becoming a competitive team again.
  10. This was a fun thread to read through. The old posts and the ones from recent months. The list obviously starts with George Quarles and Gary Rankin for obvious reasons. In my opinion though, this list of coaches can run deep. With all due respect to coach Quarles and coach Rankin, there’s been a lot of great coaches over the years that coached at much smaller schools with less talent, and the win loss record will never tell the full story for how good those coaches are. I still want to be clear, though, and say those two guys are still phenomenal football coaches that should still be ranked one and two no matter what. Other great coaches that come to mind for me: Clint Satterfield - Trousdale County Bobby Sharp - Lewis County Jeff Porter - White House Mac McCurry - Moore County/Marion County/Marshall County/Franklin County Roger Perry - Portland Ron Aydelott - Riverdale/Hillsboro Thomas McDaniel - Oakland/Christian Brothers Jackie Bennett - Page (Short run but very good coach. If other circumstances did not require his early retirement he would have kept things rolling at Page).
  11. I want to start this post by saying if I mention anyone that’s been a head coach, then I apologize. Current ones that come to mind for me: 1. Stephen Jackson at Oakland 2. Brentwood offensive coordinator seems like one heck of a coach. I liked their scheme and plan of attack against Oakland. They did the best they could in that game, in my opinion. 3. Defensive coordinator at Fairview (Don’t know his name, but Fairview always looks well coached defensively when I’ve gotten the chance to see them). 4. Kelly Holcomb OC at Riverdale. 5. Curtis Grah Honorable mention: Alex Melton because his defense at Summit was very impressive this past year at Summit. He just became the head coach at Franklin.
  12. It’s going to be interesting to see how things shake out for this program. The new choice for the head coach brought mixed reviews when he was hired, from what I remember. Year 2 will be a big year for further instilling his coaching style and leadership principles into the program and helping them improve. Hopefully he’s ready for the challenge. I always hope for the best when a hometown guy is the head coach of their school. We need more of that in this state.
  13. I bet Justin Palmer applied for this job and I honestly would not have been surprised if he got it. Blackman might not have wanted to look past the baggage. If Caine Ballard applied for this job then that’s interesting. I assumed he wouldn’t want to get back in the game until his son graduates. Interesting move going with Tygard. Good for him. They definitely just got a coach whose strength is X’s and O’s from what I’ve read. Maybe that’s exactly what Blackman needs to get over the top. We shall see.
  14. I agree with that. 5-10 years ago, Franklin was the place to be. After all the additional schools and big zone changes, Franklin is not as loaded as they used to be. They still get talented kids, but no more then Brentwood, Indy, Centennial, Ravenwood, or Summit now that they are in the region now. This is a tough job. Every week is a challenge. Franklin needs a really strong leader that is going to out X and O people. Best maximize what their best athletes can do. To be clear. I’m not saying the previous staff did not do these things. Donnie Webb is a darn good football coach and ran a great program built on integrity and high class.
  15. I imagine they’ve started digging through applications and started the interview process by now. As a outsider with no real connection or fan hood tied to Blackman, I can’t wait to see who they hire.
  16. This is an interesting job, but they have got to get out of this habit of changing coaches so quickly. The last 2 guys they had only lasted 3 years each but win loss record wise, there was no indication that either coach was in over their head or anything like that. Oakland is really strong year in and year out right now. The region as a whole is really strong. This is a tough job. It’s been up and down historically with who is the best team. Allow someone to coach there awhile and really lead the program. Right now, there’s no shame in making it to the quarterfinals and losing to Oakland. Really interested to see who applies for this one next.
  17. Speaking of Jackson. Do you think he’s ever going to go for a head coaching job, or does he seem like he’s happy and content with what he’s doing now? I do want to include that I don’t fault him either way. He’s in a position where he gets to run the show on defense while Creasy handles offense and that’s a great school to coach at. Plenty of coaches are plenty happy being coordinators and not dealing with that stress that being a head coach adds.
  18. I hope this appeal works out and they settle this thing. A lot of kids at Shelbyville that have worked hard, done the right thing this year, and didn’t have anything to do with that fight. It seems like that’s the wrong punishment to be punishing all those great kids who did nothing wrong. I would think there’s a better way for TSSAA to handle this situation and put the consequences on the right people. Not the kids.
  19. This Friday is going to be a lot of fun. All 3 regions game this week could potentially tell a lot about how things are going to shake out this season. Page vs. Shelbyville has serious seeding implications on the line. Does Page win for the third straight year and give themselves a shot to three peat as region champs? Or does the new coaching staff at Shelbyville push them to a big win and the beginning of a new day in this region. Franklin County vs. Lincoln County is fun too. Brand new coaching staffs, new eras, and fresh starts for both of these programs. This could be the kind of win that allows one of them to jumpstart their season and maybe make a push for the playoffs. This could be just the beginning possibly. Even Columbia vs. Summit could be interesting to watch. Sure Summit is likely to win, but Columbia Central just playing a real competitive game just provides further evidence that they are improved this year.
