  1. I guess the point I am trying to make is that if they are going to combine, they should do it now. Roane County (about 12 times more populated than Clay, granted) has historically strongly opposed any plan that eliminated community schools. Harriman is Harriman City schools for the time being, so that is always a factor, too.
  2. I stand corrected on Fightin' Irish. I have been to south central KY enough to see the Scottish influence: Glasgow, Bowling Green, Scottsville, etc.
  3. I like most of the nicknames you mentioned, btw... except Fightin' Irish. I'm not overly familiar with Clay County history, but I imagine there are few Irish people and even fewer Catholics. I'd definitely stay away from Lions, Tigers, Bobcats, Wildcats, etc.
  4. Read my post in the girls BB thread of same name. That's my take on school consolidation.
  5. Antwan, we don't want York in our region if we can help it! How bout moving Portland west or Cannon Co south?
  6. ELA, I'm an outsider, but I don't like the way this is headed at all. If they are going to combine, combine now. If not, then the new school should be called Celina High. If word were to get out that a new high school for the Kingston district was being built just north of the Clinch River, and it was going to be called Roane Central, but the student body would be the same for the short term, and then word leaked that they were going to close Oliver Springs in 3-5 years and put them in Roane Central, there'd be riots... Whatever the decision is, it needs to be immediate. Poor planning will make everyone mad.
  7. Excellent post, CoachT. We need a lot more coaches from both sides at this discussion!
  8. Sorry sportsguy, I thought this debate centered mostly around football.
  9. Thanks for the info. I always thought it was in Macon Co.
  10. "Most 3A championships were won by urban city or county schools." Not hardly. Marion County is not urban (nor is it the only school in Marion Co.). Neither is Portland or White House or Milan. Melrose is. Austin East is.
  11. Where do the financial-aid privates fit in this plan?
  12. Midway in Roane County isn't going anywhere anytime soon. There was a push for schools consolidation in the late 80's, but it was defeated. The plan that was finally put to the referendum left Midway and Oliver Springs open and combined Roane Co. High (Kingston) and Rockwood. Naturally, this plan got a lot of support from South Roane County and Oliver Springs, but was soundly defeated in the rest of the County. So, RC schools reached a compromise and renovated some of the old buildings and built a new Kingston elementary and others. I don't expect this issue to resurface anytime soon. Harriman is not governed by Roane County schools, for the record, although some local officials keep pushing for Harriman City schools to become part of the Roane County system.
  13. Yeah, but, Maryville Rebs, that game really don't mean much when it comes to playoff implications. Neither does Marion Co. vs. South Pitt, or Kingston vs. Harriman. Oliver Springs vs. Sweetwater and all the northwest region 7-2A rivalries do!
  14. How about Oliver Springs vs. Sweetwater or any team in region 7 vs. any other team in region 7 for the best rivalry in 2A?
  15. So does Loudon-Lenoir City, and Maryville-Alcoa, I'm sure. Rockwood/Harriman/Kingston have all had those elements in the past, too.
  16. I don't like the way this plan shapes up for my YellowJackets. There are very few 3A teams in ET under this plan. Here's what RCHS schedule might look like: 3A games: Loudon Scott Austin East 2 of McMinn Cent, Sequoyah, or Meigs Co. Non-3A Harriman Rockwood Lenoir City Oliver Springs 1 from Wartburg, Tyner, or Sweetwater
  17. ELA, you misread me. I know Celina wouldn't have much trouble finding opponents. However, I can't see teams clammering to play RBS, especially if it's going to hurt their SoS! Why doesn't Celina play LA right now, speaking of rivalries?? If I had to guess, a Celina sched absent of regions would probably see Jackson Co, LA, Watertown, RBS, and who else? Upperman? Monterey? Tompkinsville, KY?
  18. CoachT, I've driven the majority of that drive (not for sports). I go from Kingston to Fayetteville at least once a year, and that takes me from Sparta to Fayetteville. (FTR, I think Sparta being in that region is asinine!)
  19. Be careful just1np, you're beginning to sound like QueenBee.
  20. There aren't any 3A schools near Grundy County right now. It's a long way from GCHS to Howard! It's also a good haul from Sparta to Manchester or Wilson Cent. (or Rhea County if they moved east). [Edited by swamp on 6/29/02 9:39P]
  21. Here we go scout: RBS would play Celina 10 times, b/c nobody else would want to go there. Scott High might be ok: York, Oneida, Sunbright, Wartburg, Jellico, Anderson Co. Who else would want to travel up US 27? Maybe they could sucker Kingston and Livingston Acad into coming up there and playing.... Union County would play Claiborne Co, Rutledge and Gibbs., but I can see them having a real hard time getting opponents. Of course, UCo is not too difficult a trip for the KFL, though, and a likely 'W'. Claiborne Co. would play Union Co., Gibbs, Rutledge, and Powell Valley. A little more of a geographic challenge than UCo. A usual 'W' for UCo, too. Maybe Bell Co, KY and Middlesboro, KY or could get some of the Hawkins Co. or Mo'town schools. A weak North Greene team might also be the answer.... Things to ponder.
