Maryville vs. Alcoa

Thanks for the info Tom and 23. I didn't know that Alcoa had added another all-star player. That certainly could come in to play.

 

I'm really excited about seeing Ryan Tallent play. He's been my favorite player for awhile. I love the way he gets going down the sideline and then puts his shoulder into the tackler. I hope the O line for the Rebels can open some holes for him. Sounds like it will be a classic matchup with him meeting those great linebackers when he does get past the line.

 

And I'm glad that Hunt is pretty agile since it sounds like a pretty scary set of DE's out there chasing him. I trust that GQ will come up with something to keep them from having our QB for lunch.

 

sounds like another one for the history books! i'm so pumped...can't we just all go down to the field and do the game now? We can play it again next Friday night if everyone's not satisfied with the outcome.....

im really excited to see all these alcoa fans getting pumped up for the game, that makes the expression on their face even better than the one they had last year when we beat them.

Maryville will win. Maryville is always head and shoulders better than Alcoa(4A). When Alcoa won in 2000, Maryville had their 3rd string QB, four turnovers, and still only lost by seven.

Alcoa's tought, but this is Maryville and they are one of the top three or four teams in the state. I don't see Alcoa winning this one, but it should be a good game. Alcoa also has a great tradition, but I find it hard to pick against Maryville. Shoot, they might give Riverdale a run for their money this year.

Did anybody on this thread ever play for either team? Even when both schools were in the same class and district Maryville was able to field two full squads (offensive and defensive) while just about every Alcoa player pulled double duty so your remark about the Alcoa "theory" getting old doesn't really fly. Whenever Alcoa is competitive through a full game (where the 1st team for both teams play most of the game) that's an accomplishment...when Alcoa wins that's a feat! I played on the first two championship teams (3 if you count our bowl win at Clinton before the clinic bowl system) My cousin carl played at MHS and my nephew plays for them now...not to mention my relatives on Alcoa's team now. The players know the pressure and intensity of this rivalry...when comes to the state we cheer for the county!

are there any takers on how many people Alcoa is planning on facilitating for this game? I've heard from other people that this game gets into the thousands...is that true? Is Alcoa capable of accomodating that many people at their school?

I don't know how many years back you are going but before Tim Hammontree became head coach in 93 Maryville had many players playing both ways also. No I did not play football at Maryville but I did attend there and have been going to the games for over 40 years. Maryville being such a bigger school enrollment wise is what we hear each year when we beat Alcoa, which basically puts us in a "lose lose" situation. When we were in the same district years back obviously the enrollments were comparable. Somone who played under Ted Wilson and Don Story can post on this for verification but I am pretty sure Maryville did not fully two platoon until the early to mid nineties, and your assertion that they did back in the day both teams were in the same district is inaccurate. They may have had some one way players but not "two full squads (offensive and defensive)".

In '76, MHS had these two way players. Spradlin, Loope, McCord, Maples, Casteel, Arnold, and Nelson. Maryville may had more overall players, but most starters played both offense and defense.

 

Alcoa's D-line in '76 made Maryville's O-line look like midgets. DeHart, Rhino, and Mark Love were huge for their day. When Chuck Anderson, Maryville's 150 lb. center lined up against DeHart it looked like a total mismatch.

Please there is a difference between a team that has stars that play both ways and have legit backups and a team that is 1 deep at key positions...Maryville has always fielded larger teams. And the size disparity is so exaggerated, besides DeHart had to pound with a juiced up Spradlin up the middle all night...
