The official high school rules for overtime are 2 complete 10 minute periods no matter how many goals are scored. If still tied, 2 5 minute golden goal periods are played where the first goal wins and ends the game. If still tied, then penalty kicks.

Remember that the clock is stopped by the referee for various reasons which may make the period seem longer. These include goals, misconduct(yellow and red cards), penalty kicks and injuries. thumb

Their was no injuries, yellow cards or any stoppage in the 2nd five minutes in the Madison and Martin game. The official got caught up in the game watching and not paying attention to the watch. Our coach sets his watch by the officials watch and the first 5 minutes of sudden death, he was right on the money with the head official and the side official. Madison had a perfect game plan and it worked except they didn't figure the ref would get caught watching. Simple has that. When Martin scored, they should have been in a shoot-out instead of playing.

Sorry but stoppage did occur during the sudden death period. The Madison goalie was injured and was attended to for a number of minutes.

Unfortunately the referee is the only one who knows how much stoppage time is added. Many people get caught up in watching stadium clocks or setting their own stop watches - only the referee's judgement is used to determine how much time is wasted on substitutions, balls intentionally kicked out, injuries, etc. It's hard to imagine that the ref still wanted to run up and down the field after 110 minutes - believe me no one wants to blow the whistle more than the ref. Of course, no ref wants to go to PK's either. Did he let it run a little long hoping for the golden goal? You make the call.

There is no such thing as stoppage time in high school. The referee stops his watch for specific reasons only and when the time is up, it's up, unlike FIFA and USSF where the watch runs continuously and the referee adds stoppage time for subs, injuries, etc. at his discretion.

PK's begin with a group of 5 from each team, alternate shot. If still tied after all ten kicks, then it is one kick each until one makes and one misses.

Also, not all 5 from each time have to kick for it to end. For instance team A makes their first three kicks, team B misses their first three, it's over since team B cannot win no matter what the 4th and 5th kickers do. :)

"Remember that the clock is stopped by the referee for various reasons which may make the period seem longer. These include goals, misconduct(yellow and red cards), penalty kicks and injuries. " that is your quote from above at an earlier post- i'm afraid you are confusing me with semantics-if the clock is stopped for whatever reason or if a second stop- watch is used to keep track of "stoppage of play" then there is "stoppage time " in high school or extra time no matter what you call it. But I do appreciate the confirmation that it is a five minute golden goal period.

I was told when we played McNairy Central and we almost got into the PK's that it went with 5 shooters from each team, and if tied after those shooters, 5 more came out. Then, if all was still tied after 10 kicks for each team, 5 more came out, and so on. Also, no kicker could be used twice. That way you had to clear your bench as well if it got that far. Then, if it was STILL tied after everyone had kicked once, you start over. I was told this personally by a referee that explained his qualification to me MANY times.

    • We could sure use some math teachers country wide. Ever go into a store or restaurant and the bill comes to $9.97 and you give them a ten dollar bill and 2 pennies because you wanted a nickle back and then the meltdown starts and the next thing two more people have to come and help figure it out and the place comes to a complete halt. I see this everyday and it's a sad representation of all these schools allowing these kids out the door to get shortchanged the rest of their life.
    • I like the Pirates chances. I’ll be there as soon as work allows.
    • Stars, I heard we were searching far and wide for some math teachers. Any chance their kids bench press or 40 times are getting checked? LOL I’ve heard good things from 825.
    • I think it was expected. “Bad” luck I guess to get a couple difference maker QBs in the same class. I thought the decision was made a little early myself, but they were struggling offensively last year.  I assume the running quarterback alco had last year would be a senior this fall, and the transfer would start the following two years in addition to getting a ton of playing time this year. Maybe he waits two yrs, but I doubt it. The kid is good. So is the one who stayed.
    • I'm from Cloudland and we've never played a sectional game.  We need to win tomorrow night to avoid that bus ride.  Us and north greene can play with you guys so I'm expecting good games whoever the matchup is.
