Its amazing, the atmosphere the intinsity, the struggle, the pain, the pride... No other game brings that to the table. People put their bodys on the line for all of the above, and if they come out on top it is the best feeling in the world... Its a mans game, giving up your blood sweat and tears just so you can call yourself a champion... No other sport has that effect.

Well, the forward pass for starters. It was legalized and modernized in the early 1900s when the game's high fatality rate almost led to Teddy Roosevelt shutting down the game. The college game was popular from the get-go and increased its appeal every year because of the pagentry and campus electricity generated. .... The sport is a perfect mix of sheer brutality and detailed strategy. .... It took off with a boom with the mass appeal of television in the 1950s and -- surprising as it might seem -- the old AFL's ability to use television to its ultimate advantage (unlike baseball, which did virtually nothing about the medium as it caused the demise of small-town Minor League teams all across the country). ... The game looks good on TV, which turned millions of people to the game.

Anyway, something like that maybe.

I think football is so popular because it requires almost every aspect of your physical body and your mind. You have to be a great athlete, know what your doing and know that your gonna get roughed up.

Above all else football is a true team sport. In Basketball you can win a championship with just a couple great players. For example in high school if you have a big guy that can play that alone will pretty much guarantee you to the playoffs. In Baseball all you need is a couple good pitchers and your team will likely be pretty good. However in football having a great QB means nothing if your line doesn't block or the receivers drop passes. Everybody has to be on the same page in order to be successful in football.

Best answer by far.

No other sport gives you the gratification that a football championship can give you.

The easiest way to sum it up is that humans crave drama. football is drama at it's highest form. So many plots and sub plots. It has soo many levels.

The two most popular forms of entertainment are drama and comedy. Football has a lot of one and a lil of the other mixed in.

The human struggle...like someone said, the hoard watching the gladiators.

I feel half empty until football season rolls around...at many levels, that's sick :thumb:

I don't care....

People love watching people who motivate them. Football players motivate average people to be more than average. You actually see struggle, sacrifice, determination, heart, character, victory and defeat unfold right in front of your very eyes in a matter of a couple hours. It's true drama. It's honest, it's painful, it's glorious. It can be very pretty and graceful. It can be very ugly and hard to swallow at times. It teaches life lessons that are not covered in anything else. It'll make you cry or laugh. It'll make you happy or sad. It may even cause rejoicing for some. It can make you think about things that are so much more than a game played by kids. It allows you to see what kids are made of and capable of accomplishing. It teaches some about family, others about discipline, and others a work ethic. There is no script, no blue prints and no certainties.

What else can you say all this about?

It is one of the true team sports.

I think you are on it. I think no other sport comes close. Soccer is popular worldwide for the same reason. Having 11 people doing their jobs to make a play work.

But football is better because it incorporates more that just fast runners.

It includes all types of people. From the big heavies, to the fast skill positions to the kickers who usually are not the gladiators mentioned earlier in this thread. It has the bands, the cheerleaders, the dance teams and ultimately the

FANS!!!!!!

Football is the greatest sport on earth by far, not only because of it's shear brutality and roughness... but because of the strategy and smarts that go along with it. In this great sport you can take out all of your aggression on the other team that you absolutely hate, no matter who they are or who's on the team, you don't have to know 'em to hate 'em!!!
