High School Rules

In High School - cut blocking is legal in the tackle box on the line of scrimmage.

.........

I think cut blocking is also illegal if the defender starts outside of the box and runs into it - cant cut him either. I've seen it called and agrued about it and lost the argument.

I don't believe cut blocking is nearly as dangerous as it is made out to be. But it is the rule for now and probably won't be changed back as long as it is preceived as dangerous.

Like CoachT - i never liked allowing the open palm blocking.

Like somebody else - if the defense get back across before the snap no foul should be called. Much more exciting and lets the quick snapper catch them offsides instead of the man in stripes.

Chop Blocking is used when someone doesn't use proper techinique and resorts to throwing their bodies at the defender's kness. Any defensive lineman with any atheltic ability runs right by it anyway, so if you made it legal, your really not helping anything from an O-linemans standpoint, your really just making it easier for the defender to run through blocks.

I couldnt agree with you more. One of the things we are taught on defense is to play with your hand. 9 times out of 10 if you do that, the D-line has no problem steping over/on the O-line's back. The cut block is not as effective against a good defensive line as most people think...

It is effective if you use it right. I'm 235 and have used it well against a 315 lb man. The more effective block is the crab block. If your defender is faster than you, fire off and crawl on your hands. It hurts, but is very useful against quick people.

Another change I would like to see made pertains to the hash marks. I would prefer to see the ball placed in line with the uprights for field goals like the pros do.

Even in college, you see teams trying to draw a penalty to improve the kicking angle. Of course, the penalty is always declined.

Maybe somebody can explain the need for 3 sets of hash marks in a way my feeble mind can accept.

How stupid is seeing a return man stand at the 1 yard line, jump up and try to catch the kickoff before it goes into the end zone so he will have a chance to return a kick. This is not 1960;kickers can kick it into the end zone.

A couple of rules on the high school level that I would like to see changed are the cut block and the ability to come out of the endzone. I think cut blocking should be allowed all over the field like the college rule. Not from behind, but face to face. I believe this would open the game up some. I know the arguement that it will increase injuries, but I disagree.

Secondly, with the number of kickers who can kick the ball into the endzone on the rise, I think the kids should be allowed to return the ball. Same on an interception.

What do you think?

I agree with you, cut blocking down field would be better but only for the offensive lineman who have to cut!! About the return rule i agree with you there too.

    • Wanted to see if all of you would lift up Kyle James family in prayer. Kyle was one of the best wrestlers to ever come out of Soddy Daisy and as some of you know he lost his house a few weeks ago and now his family and friends mourns his passing. Not sure if any of you were around in early 2000’s when Kyle was wrestling at Soddy, but he was a 3 time state champ and a Fargo AA along with going to Colorado to train to make the Olympic team. That goal was never reached due to medical issues, but he was an amazing wrestler and his family is as good as gold. If you were around at that time and have any pictures of Kyle, please go onto Alexy Winesburgh FB page and post. Thanks, Doug Benton
    • My opinion the 8 teams will be-  Greenback, Wartburg, Gordonsville, Jo Byrns, Eagleville, Bruceton, Dresden, and South Fulton. Gordonsviile is probably the favorite but I wont say it will be an easy road. With the right draw any of the 8 could win it.
    • I understand Gibson Co. will be announced tomorrow with a familiar name. Not sure about So. Gibson.
    • A huge addition to the staff today! Former Hardin Valley legend and Richmond College running back Aaron Dykes was announced as the running backs coach. Rushed for over 3,000 yards at HVA, with 35 total touchdowns. I loved watching in Hardin Valley. I can’t believe he’s at Bearden now. I know he was trying to get a HVA job, I don’t know what happened there and how he ended up at Bearden, but I'm glad he’s here and believe he will be teaching art class as well! What a good get for the staff!!
    • Thoughts? Gordonsville won it last year with a sophomore pitcher and returned almost everybody. Can anyone beat them?
