Average number of matches?

In my opinion this is way too many. I myself as a coach have gotten caught up in the scheduling frenzy. No wonder so many wrestlers go through burn out. 20 years ago, if we wrestled all the way through post season tournaments we averaged 30 matches. College was the same. Only the coaches can restrain themselves and decide what is best for their individual teams. I would like to see a minimum of 30 days of practice prior to any scrimmages or preseason matches. A maximum of tri meets through the week, no quads (I scheduled 3 myself). The TSSAA set the number of competition dates to 20 for a reason. We have all found the loop holes to get more matches for the kids.

During my coaching tenure we did not roll out the mats for less than two matches. My wrestlers would average between 40 - 45 matches each. The best season we had, several of my wrestlers went over 50 matches. That season we had no injuries that caused anyone to not be able to compete and no one missed a match because of sickness. Mat time is one of the most important factors in having a successful team.

i generally averaged around 35 to 40 matches a year. i was alwasy wanting more matches though. mat time is what the sport is all about. who wants to practice for 6 months and only have 30 matches? in reality, wrestlers get burned out from over practicing and not enough competition. college or high school level.

Mat time is a very important pasrt of the sport. The wrestler getting 50 or more matches is gaining experience, experience that will help him as a wrestler. On the other hand i do believe wrestling the same kids from your area/ region might burn someone out because of the lack of new challenges. A good wrestler prevents himself from burning out by going ino the practice room looking to get better not just going through the motions!

-keep the matches coming

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
