D-I or D-II, Which one is harder to place in

Michael Gaut has been to the state wrestling tournament the last three years.

To make it back for a fourth time, the Catholic High School senior will have to do something he didn't have to do in previous years: qualify.

That's the price Catholic wrestlers are having to pay for switching from Division II to Division I, but that's OK with Gaut.

Gaut, who wrestles in the 189-pound weight class, will get his chance starting today in the Region 2 tournament, which features 24 teams, at Alcoa High School.

"Every other year we've just gone without having to wrestle for it," said Gaut, who is 36-10 this season. "It means a lot more now. You have to quality for it, and you have to beat extra people to go there.

"It's a harder tournament now."

Catholic went 18-9 during its regular season, and coach Don Beardsley is pleased with the results of the division switch.

"It's kind of nice to be back in Division I, especially after being in that region with McCallie and Baylor," Beardsley said. "When a young team goes up against those teams, it's like hitting your head against a brick wall."

How many Catholic wrestlers should advance from the region?

"Realistically," Beardsley said, "maybe four - and that's from a team with three seniors, one junior and the rest freshman and sophomores."

Only one made it!

Of Catholic's 14 varsity wrestlers, 103-pounder Binh Hoang has the best chance at advancing. The sophomore is 34-7 and the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

Michael O'Hearn (145), a senior, is 24-12, and senior Eamon Hosey (140) is 28-16.

"The Division I tournament," Hoang said, "is probably harder to place at, because there are more kids. Division II, I guess it would be easier to place at least sixth.

"But winning Division II would probably be harder."

Beardsley summed it up this way:

"It's a lot easier to medal (place in the top six) in Division II, but it's a lot harder to win Division II."

For Gaut, just getting to the tournament would be a feat in itself.

"I really want to qualify," he said. "I don't want my senior year to be the only year that I haven't gone to state. That's just something to work for."

He didn't make it.

!

I think the young men from KCHS said what we have been debating for years.

The wrestler you are basing this argument on went 1-2 all three years at Div II state. He never placed and was never going to. There are a lot of DI wrestlers who qualify from weak regions who are 1 and done and will never place at state. So, what exactly is your argument and who are you having this argument with? If all you are saying is that it is harder to qualify for state at DI, well DUH. If you are implying that the DII wrestlers who place at state would not even qualify for the DI tournament, then you need to master something other than your blaster.

How do you get that I'm implying anything. What di my topic say. Read before U wright. B)

I agree the in the top 2 spots in DII that the young men are usually some of the best in the state. Nevertheless, looking at the D-II brackets makes you laugh. Most of the kids know every wrestler and usually know who the top 2 kids are going to be.

My point was to show a kid who qualified for state 3 years straight under D-II and under D-1 he had to earn it.

I'm just a dreamer who would love to go back to pre-split.

The D-II IS LIKE OUR OLD DISTRICT TOURNEYS EXCEPT WE HAD TO WRESTLE MORE MATCHES.

I know ND will do well in the D-1 Tourney and would love to see their thoughts at the end of the Tourney.

IMO-To win D-1 wgt class it's a war, to win D-II you wrestle one real match.

I hated Stats in School but here U go:

In D-II B)

16 teams

U have up to a 54% chance to place. (112 which has at least 3 of the top kids in the state)

D-I B)

127 wrestling programs with a chance to send kids to state B)

8% Chance to place in state.

1.58% chance of making it to the finals.

Just a wee bit tougher :thumb:

Since you did bring it up, BA was 1-0 against d1 opponents last year. They beat the 5A state champions if I'm not mistaking. just a thought

Guess what the Irish didn't

Do they face each other this year?

    • Y’all boys can’t spell discipline. Probably lead the state in personal fouls last year. Being halfway disciplined in 1 game against Smith County in 3rd round doesn’t dismiss the rest of the season. “Shoulda” won the state championship but those mouths got the best of you yet again. Marion already had a lot more retuning than y’all this year. Adding these 2 D1 kids will 100% make a major impact. Marion will stand on business this year. They haven’t forgotten. I’m just keeping it real
    • MC upgraded with 2 studs. If they can’t get it done this year with a generational speed talent in Pickett then I’m not sure they ever will. Huge favorite in the East currently.    Multiple offers from FCS calls for gold.
    • no they will be tough for sure
    • Marion just jumped ER as the favorites in the East. Two big time transfers for y’all kinfolks. Bullseye has been set now. I said it the last two years it is time and both times y’all let me down. Can’t say you’re short on talent this year or that you’re young. Time to put up or shut up. Surely y’all can get over the hump this year. I’m just keeping it real
    • Should have won by 30 last year if we played discipline at the very least. May have got 2 dogs up front but remember we have the best DL in the state on our team. Also added a 6’6” 320lb O lineman.
