patterned after the NCAA D1 World Series and I might add that the SEC also uses this format

I don't like it. Not really a fair way to determine the best teams. A fluke draw

could leave two, three or even the tourney's best four teams in the same

bracket.

That's just one of the quirks in this setup.

SUGGESTIONS?? NO ONE KNOWS REALLY WHO THE BEST TEAMS ARE - I'VE BEEN FOLLOWING HS BASEBALL FOR 20 YRS AND FROM YR TO YR YOU REALLY NEVER KNOW -- THAT'S JUST PART OF IT...

Like the year Riverdale baseball drew the same bracket with Hendersonville, Farragut and Germantown-Houston....

But who is to decide who the best teams are? Riverdale and Ooltewah were both 35-7 entering Spring Fling, both with wins against good competition (Riverdale's wins over Lexington (KY) Catholic, Collierville and Germantown Houston comes to mind)

One of Riverdale's wins was a 10-0 decision over Science Hill. But who knocked Riverdale out last night? Science Hill....

That is what makes baseball the great sport it is. You win a third - You lose a third - and the third in the middle decides what kind of year you have....

I'm not suggesting that we know who the best teams are before the tournament

starts & do some sort of seeding system because as anybody who follows

baseball knows, NOBODY really knows that. That's why we have a

tournament.

But I might be inclined to have a double elimination tourney patterned

after the softball format. That way all eight teams are in the mix. Things

might play out the same regardless, but I think this would be a fairer way.

I know the depth of a pitching staff really comes into play, but it does that

anyway. The solution to that...stay out of the loser's bracket !!

Softball can play many more games in a day than baseball. An eight-team double elimination tournament would require 14 or 15 games. You wouldn't be able to play that many baseball games in four days and have any pitchers available at the end of the week. Remember, baseball has pitching limitations, softball does not.

I believe the NCAA has gone back to the true double-elimination haven't they? They went to a single game for a few years while CBS was televising the event.

NCAA has two four-team double elimination tournaments. The change for TV was that the bracket winners would play best 2-of-3 for the championship.

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
