Hunters Lane -v.s- Brentwood

Just a quick question...

 

IF the weather turns out to be bad, wouldn't that favor the Brentwood team?

 

Two reasons...

 

While Brentwood is very balanced on offense, it seems that HL wouldn't be able to get out and run around Bwood is the field conditions were wet and sloppy.

 

Second, HL only threw 3 passes versus Hendersonville last week and i think this leads to a disadvantage if they get down early or can't capitalize on the ground...

BHS should win this one if they stick to their gameplan. Now that they realize they are a running team and have coach Daniels duct taped to the bench, they might be able to do just that. Good D should keep HL offence off the field.

Let's not forget the Franklin playoff game a few years ago at Hunters Lane when Franklin came back to win in the second half. It was wet, cold and muddy!

First off, Congratulations to HL for their first playoff win. Victory is sweeter when you beat an old nemisis. Good luck to you as you travel further down a road you're experiencing for the first time.

 

IMO, HL wore down the Bruin defense in the second half. Bruins did a great job for 3 1/2 quarters of negating HL's speed, but as the fourth quarter rolled on, you could see the visitors becoming a step slower. 80% of HL's plays were to the outside, which put pressure on the LB's to get to the edge. HL also opened it up more than usual. They run a great offensive scheme to take advantage of their speed. The backs are small, and do a fabulous job of keeping patient until a seam opens up. However, your kicking game will be your Achille's heel.

 

Bruins took a 7-0 lead into half, after a 28 yard field goal was ruled no good as time expired. HL has incredibly short uprights, and from my angle, the kick was so high that the referees got disoriented. This point will come back to haunt BHS forever, as things happened at the end which turned the game around.

 

BHS kept the ball on the ground, but with a visibly slower Alex Holling, QB Matt Hayes made the most noise running. Hayes could not connect in the passing game for most of the game.

 

HLHS took the lead for the first time 20-14 at the 2:16 mark of the 4th Q. Bruins then opened things up as they moved down the field, finally culminating into a fourth down and five with (we think) 5 seconds left on the clock.

 

A point needs to be made here: the clock operator was either a victim of terrible equipment or is absolutely incompetent. I first noticed that he ran the clock during one series when HL got a first down. He never stopped it once, even while they were moving the chains. Nearly 30 seconds ran off. It happened other times against HL on incomplete passes. The referee would signal stop the clock, and it would run for 3-4 seconds. On the Bruins final drive, the clock would click down to, for example, 1:20 seconds on a stoppage of play. Then it would (before the ball snap) click off to 1:19. Then 1:18. All before the referee would signal for the clock to be started. On BHS's last possession, the clock (during a dead ball injury timeout) would go 5.0- then 4.9, then 4.8! The coaches were screaming and 5.0 would be put back on the clock. Then the referee turned his back and it would go to 4.9, 4.8. The side judge saw this and again called time out. Put to 5.0-then to 4.7 it would go. This could've been devestating had the game turned out a little differently.

 

Bruins score with no time? left and line for the XP. The snap was high, but Loudermilk launches the ball straight up and through- but again, the short goal posts disorient the referree and he signals no good. The ball was neither tipped, shanked, blocked; the kicker crushed it. The whole sideline jumped up knowing it was good- but inexplicably it goes the other way

 

With now overtime, the Bruins are shell shocked. They lose the toss, go on Offense, new kicker inserted and hit the FG. HL gets the ball, and three plays later are in the endzone- and the victory.

 

Again, congrats to HL and all of Region 5 for their impressive victories.

To BHS, and the Eleven Seniors: this hurts, but that final drive is what you need to remember. Greater season then you would have thought you'd have back after your freshman year. To the young Bruins, remember this feeling and make it motivate you going forward.

Congratulations to HL on a great win. Of all the teams I've watched walk off the field after a game, I don't remember a team more emotionly distraught than the 2004 Warriors that lost that heartbreaker to Brentwood in round 1. So it was nice to see them get the win. Unfortunately the 2nd most dispondent team I've witnessed was the bunch of Bruins that walked out last night.

 

Have to agree with FTT2 on the kicking. The first thing I thought when they waved off the first field goal was that the uprights seemed unusually short. The players on the field thought they made it but the stripe-shirted guys who have the best view in the house disagreed and thats all that matters. The Bruins had 5 chances to score in the kicking game during regulation and only converted 2. Remember that its the kicking GAME and not the kicker, as it takes a snap, a spot, a kick and competent blocking to have a successful try. No excuses, just an observation.

 

Great game Warriors and good luck the rest of the way. Remember the last 2 teams that beat Brentwood in the playoffs (R'wood and Franklin) made it to Murfreesboro and one of them came away with the gold ball.

Thanks papabear. Brentwood has a fine young team and will be a force next season.

Did anyone else notice how Brentwood's coach came to the middle of the field to check on injured players from Hunters Lane? That showed a lot of class. He must be a fine gentleman.
