Open Zoning for Students

The zoning battle is in the elementary school ranks, with new ones being built almost by the hour. Elementary growth leads to the building of new middle schools. The elementary schools are the ones who are "targeted" as to which high school grows- or doesn't.

The fact is that the school board, as it has been constructed since before any of our time, is going to very pro-Franklin HS. FHS will be protected and will allow to get as big as they want. You have had a number of FHS grads on this board and they feel very strong about their old school.

I was very involved with the open zoning push, as at the time, BHS had gone from 1800 students to being the smallest school in 5-A when Ravenwood opened. It didn't make sense to have one school busting at the seams, and others at 3/4 capacity, and spending more money to build more schools. The only reason they built Ravenwood was because architecturally they couldn't add a second story to BHS. There was a very big backlash among many parents at the time to building another school and splitting up families. But like everything else, time heals a lot of wounds.

Nolensville will have a new high school, as well as south of the county to relieve Indy- which is at capacity right now.

BTW, the top school system in the state has been WillCo- and has been for quite some time. The latest Newsweek rankings has at least three of their HS ranked above Oak Ridge, with the top academic public high school in the state still Brentwood.

Believe it or not I heard that possibly the next new school would be built around the Sneed Rd. aread of WillCo. (between FHS and BHS). I suppose it could have been a wild rumor.

Cannot see that happening. Too close to both schools plus that will probably include Fieldstone Farms and Grassland, which is the heart of Rebel country.
