i have a cousin who wrestles in memphis and he says the referees are pretty good. and about the one family who controls everything, why isn't there a rule to prevent that? it almost sounds like the Gracies in Ultimate Fighting. the Gracies pretty much invented Ultimate Fighting; maybe this family pretty much invented good referreeing. anyway, my cousin told me about this website, and it's totally cool. thanks for the opportunity to write.

thanks,

chad smith

Memphis is very bad! They probably have some good officials in the Memphis area but one family controls everything and they are going to send family members and friends to the big tournaments.

Nashville was good in the past but it's probably been 10-15 years. The good officials retired or decided they had families that need their time more than the officials association and everyone should understand that thought process. Let's take a close look at some of the retired Nashville officials:

Joe Wiggins, Kevin Marchettie (Sewannee wrestler), Tim Garrett (Sewannee wrestler), Ralph Williams (MTSU wrestler), Mike Apple (University of Tennessee wrestler), Brian Goeble (University of Tennessee wrestler), Jim Simpson (MTSU wrestler & semi retired), Brian Dunning (University of Tennessee & semi retired), David Scott (MTSU wrestler), Jim Turbeville, David Buck (MTSU wrestler)

Most if not all of those officials were used to officiate the state tournament so when they retired it was a huge loss of experience.

Middle Tennessee for the most part has had great refs over the years. Worst refing I have seen in years was at the McCallie Middle School Duels.

amen to that....one coach filling in for a ref...kid choked twice..warned twice...third time kid had to drag opponent out of bounds...still no points taken or disqualification

Lucas...i agree with you...for the most part the ref's do a great job...and in 3 seasons in Tenn...i have only seen one ref. who i thought needed to quit...

the name is "flowers" (spelling may be wrong?)

bad does not even begin to describe him...

i know i have put myself out on a limb...but i also bet there are other guys out there who would agree...there have been many coaches who i have heard say...i am done with this guy ever ref another match...

if you don't believe me...just request him one night and you will BELIEVE

Refs are not responsible for assigning themselves to a tournament, or event. as for the kid beign choked 3 times, i didnt see that happen but it sounds pretty bad and some points should of been awarded. But if that's ur only complaint then it is pretty weak when you take into consideration how many matches went on that day.

Tojo, I agree with you, but alot of the Chattanooga area ref's are really starting to show their age. I'm not saying they don't do a good job but just like anyone else who gets older they just slow down a step or two. I hope they're restocking because Mara has retired and Elsea, Williams and maybe a couple others may be looking to join Mara in the near future.

Chatt has been blessed with refs that love the sport, respect the kids and have been there themselves. this year I have seen 4 new refs in this area that are WAY AHEAD of most 1st year refs. Matt Bird, Josh Heffington, Alan Morris and a big guy who I dont know. Heffington ended up doing the Greenville varsity tourney and was great. If we can encourage these 4 to stay with it and get their peers involved then Chatt is still in good shape.

MEMPHIS REF'S ARE VERY BAD!!! THE "GOOD" COACHES KNOW THIS IS SOOO TRUE. they stink AT MAKING STALLING CALLS, THEY ARE TOO LAZY TO GET ON THE MAT TO COUNT BACK POINTS, they stink AT CALLING PINS AND THEY LACK THE KNOWLEDGE OF "AGGRESSIVE" WRESTLING!!!! I THINK ALL MEMPHIS REF'S NEED TO ATTEND A COACHES CLINIC IN MAKING GOOD SOLID CALLS. NOT SLOPPY ONES.

Interesting and dangerous thread....being at the state tournament the last several years, I thought the West TN wrestlers were at a disadvantage with stalling being called much faster than what they see locally. In the past month watching matches on the West side, the referees are calling stalling earlier which is a benefit for our wrestlers and more entertaining for the parents and fans.

An area which continues to need improvement (not just in West TN) is picking up the count on backpoints. It is discouraging to teach wrestlers good tilts and consistently get zero backpoints because the referee has to run around to the kid's heads before making his first hand motion. If the referee sees the shoulders open and he is standing at the wrestlers feet, he needs to begin the count as he walks around for better position. That is certainly what you seen when watching college matches and rewards the top man for wrestling aggressively to turn the bottom wrestler.

Amen!

since they're all sooo incredibly terrible, i'll look forward to seeing you in black & white next season, so you can get out there and show them how its done, if you're not willing, than think a little more before you post something this generalizing about a bad match you may have had.... punk.

last semester in the cleveland duals i ran into a ref that wasn't afraid of encouraging the wrestlers and telling them repeatedly to wrestle aggressively. my initial reaction was to retract from what he was saying, but in the end of the match, he was a great reminder that most of those guys go out there for the absolute love of the game.

Josh Craft is doing a pretty good job for a young guy.

Amen to that, AlphaDog. He's going to be a good one, just like his dad, Mike. We had both Josh and his dad reffing matches at the same event and I had parents asking me who they were because of the good job both were doing. When I told them it was a father-son combo, some of them said, " no disrespect to the dad, who is doing a good job, but we like the young one the best". I told Mike that after the matches were over and he got a kick out of it. The Chattanooga area is fortunate to have both of them.
