50% rule

Let me add this thought.

I've read the ruling that was distributed to the media - which is what has been posted here. And I've read stories from the Tennesseean and the Jackson Sun.

In these readings, AAU teams haven't been touched.

g. Added a 50% rule that applies to basketball, baseball, and softball prior to the season beginning and during the school year. Participation (includes practice) during the school year on a non-school team prior to the season by students that will play the following season on the high school team is limited to 50% of the number of players required to play the game (i.e., 3 in basketball, 5 in baseball and softball).

To me, that means that 50 percent rule applies to the participation during the school year (ie: anytime after the first day of fall sports practice, when the TSSAA school year begins) that occurs before the season (Prior to the 3rd monday in November).

Seems to me as if this rule was limited to stop rec league/ymca leagues in August-October as glorified team camps...

This discussion is a mute point. It now turns into what do we do now that it has passed. The T$$AA has past this and other rules that limit practice time and games per season. Limits the number of players on a summer team, whether they play, or just practice. There is also a longer dead period. This should make all the "lesser commited" players and parents happy. Now everyone can not practice, not work to get better, and still compete with those that "want to". And as a parent, I'm "TICKLED PINK" that the T$$AA has decided to tell me how to raise my kids, and what they can and can't do during their off season. Silly me. I thought that I had the right to make these decision on my own. Personally, I can't wait for the law suit to be filed. I'll pitch in the first donation to the legal fund to have this over turned. Just where do I send the check?

In the summer there is no limit to the number of players on a team. They can play on an AAU team, travel team or whatever. But it has to be a team that isn't coached by their h.s. coach.

There is a 50 percent rule for fall leagues. The 50 percent rule is only in affect during the school year prior to their season ie fall league.

I guess I don't have a kid playing but if a coach gets their team for 15 days during the month of June, and then in July the kids can play on their own AAU teams coached by someone else, I don't see what the big deal is.

I really don't think you understand that most Sub-state AAU games are played in April and the state AAU is played in May.. This does cause a real problem for us parents that love the game of basketball and so do our girls..!!!!!!!!!!

Im not getting the real spirit of the rule either does this mean an independent person can coach 3 or more kids during the summer in bball after the regular school yr is over.

From reading the rules and reading stories by other writers on this ruling, there is no effect on AAU and club teams.

The rule reads: "Participation (includes practice) during the school year on a non-school team prior to the season"

Ronnie Carter went on record to say this wasnt touching AAU teams.

The purpose of this rule seems to aim at schools who use fall recreation/YMCA leagues for their teams to get in glorified team camps/practice sessions.

I really don't think you understand the word "prior." The 50% rule -- as stated in a previous post -- is in place for the time of year PRIOR to the high school season. So coaches can't have a fall league leading up to the season... we all know that leading into a season a lot of our teams have already played 25-50 games.

So your AAU April and May games can still be played with all of your players...

QUOTE(old44 @ Mar 16 2007 - 12:20 PM) 826414211These are pretty much the same rules that have applied in North Carolina high school basketball for years. It hasn't hurt their programs at all. What a lot of programs do over there is attend two or three summer camps. I don't think they have a 50% rule, which brings me to this: how will small areas with only one high school, junior high, etc., allow their kids to play aau ball? I'm not a great fan of aau($$$), which I feel is a glorified rec league, but if kids choose to play, they should be allowed to play on a team of their choice, or at least try out.

AAU is a heckuva rec league! Virtually all college players have one thing in common they all played AAU basketball. Tell you what you put together your best team of non AAU players in your area, send them to just a mid level AAU tourney, I bet your rec team looses by 20 + in every game. You are right there are AAU organizations that have money as major incentive but the majority are playing to provide the opportunity to improve their players bball skills.

QUOTE(bucdaddio @ Mar 22 2007 - 06:20 PM) 826420537Am I understanding correctly that summer league games are okay, but once the school year starts, the rule is in effect?

That is correct..........actually the changes really aren't that bad. Go to the TSSAA website and read the explanation of the new calendar......still lots of time for open gym, etc.

It will basically keep HS coaches from doing anything with their kids in the AAU setting but other than that, I don't think it is that big of a deal.......

    • And that needs to go, Charter ,private ,magnet, city and any school that operates differently than pure public schools should be separated. What really needs to be done is address urban and rural. About all the usual powers have access to several kids from other schools period.
    • Sad deal. Hate it. So the coach that kicked her off is now fired??
    • Slightly off topic from a gender standpoint but just observed several boys volleyball games in the Knoxville area for a short spring season. The guys seemed to have a great time. There were several club players on each team but several football, basketball and tennis players involved. Knoxville Catholic, Maryville, Heritage, Knoxville West maybe William Blount had teams. Thanks to Coach Brent Carter from Knoxville Catholic/K2 for getting it together. I’m sure the coaches involved got several laughs trying to coach guys that really had no idea what they were talking about but pretty athletic and competitive. Catholic’s best basketball player told the coach he had played a lot of 2:3 and 1:3:1 but never a 3:3 LOL Maybe it will catch on with some more schools next year.
