Shot clock in Tennessee HS basketball

Recommended Posts

I've pondered this idea for a while, and I've come to the conclusion that I think it should happen. My biggest reason is the inconsistencies among officials about the five second rule. I couldn't tell you how many times just this past season that I've seen a player being closely guarded dribble around for ten seconds or more before the the ref even starts the count. This would also do away with playing keep away for a quarter or more and force teams to actually play basketball.

I think a 40 second clock would be doable. Opinions?

QUOTE(tigerman @ Mar 11 2007 - 08:17 AM) 826407900[/snapback]I haven't figured out the five second call all season.

You just never know when the ref is going to start counting

or not.

I think a shot clock would be good....and 40 might be a good

starting place.

They aren't cheap though.

Please don't quote me, but if there is separation ( ans I can't remeber how much ) but the five second count resets itself. It may be 2 or 3 feet, I can't remember. Good refs know this. The caliber of refs are not good at all anymore evrywhere! i think a shot clock is a wonderful idea - our community is thinking about putting in our rec leagues for the children!

The only way it will ever happen is if the schools vote it in and buy clocks for every gym that HS basketball is played in. So no it will never happen.

Didn't say it would happen, just said it'd be a good idea. Those gals going on to play college ball will have to make the adjustment anyway and it takes some getting used to.

Don't think many will play much as freshmen......so I guess they'll have time to adjust.

At high school level? No

1. You already have the 5 second closely guarded rule; Which seems to work fine in West TN. The Refs may count different from game to game, but seem to keep it fair within each game.

2. Scorers have enough trouble keeping up with the alternate possession arrow.

3. Allows more options for coaches to develop a style of play that matches their level of talent

    • Never in my life have I seen a team in a scrimmage against their own defense look so lost and confused. The defense didn’t look much better, the coaching staff can’t keep their anger together, not only with the players but also with their other coaches. I feel awful for those players. None of them look like they wanted or should’ve been out there, but for the grown men on the sidelines acting like fools, it's just embarrassing to the Farragut name and reputation. I now see why they chose not to live stream this on their YouTube channel.
    • We could sure use some math teachers country wide. Ever go into a store or restaurant and the bill comes to $9.97 and you give them a ten dollar bill and 2 pennies because you wanted a nickle back and then the meltdown starts and the next thing two more people have to come and help figure it out and the place comes to a complete halt. I see this everyday and it's a sad representation of all these schools allowing these kids out the door to get shortchanged the rest of their life.
    • I like the Pirates chances. I’ll be there as soon as work allows.
    • Stars, I heard we were searching far and wide for some math teachers. Any chance their kids bench press or 40 times are getting checked? LOL I’ve heard good things from 825.
    • I think it was expected. “Bad” luck I guess to get a couple difference maker QBs in the same class. I thought the decision was made a little early myself, but they were struggling offensively last year.  I assume the running quarterback alco had last year would be a senior this fall, and the transfer would start the following two years in addition to getting a ton of playing time this year. Maybe he waits two yrs, but I doubt it. The kid is good. So is the one who stayed.
