Someone famous said, "players don't care what you know, until they know you CARE!" You having minimal experience doesn't make you a poor candidate for a successful coach just like a person being a superstar doesn't make them a lock for being a good coach. I love this player to death but he didn't do too well as a coach, Magic Johnson.

In 2001 I saw an articlle that showed 71% of men high school coaches played the game at some time but only 47% of girls coaches had played. This same article said some of most successful percentage wise was about the same. The reason according to this article of women percentage being down was several were assistants in other sports such as football, baseball etc. and coached the girls BB.

I am not sure if this is a fact, but I had always been told that former Jackson Northside coach and current Liberty Tech coach Joe Holloway never played basketball. When we say never played I think most refer to high school or higher never playing. He worked as a manager, and was always around the game. I think he has a pretty successful track record as a head coach. If my facts are wrong about his background, someone please correct me.

I'm sure there are several good coaches that never played the game. So as long as you know the game, work hard, (both Coach & Players), do what you think is best for the players and team, treat each player with respect and give them the chance they deserve, and have winning seasons I'm sure the players and community will support you. My opinion even if you played it does not make you a good coach and neither does having a degree.

Well said! There are many players who wouldnt make very good coaching just for the simple fact that they would expect and criticize too much...with that being said, players have to be pushed to realize their true potential.

True. Players have to be pushed to relize their true potential and I don't feel there is enough of that. I feel too many players and teams go through the system never realizing their true potential.
