OSHSman
What does everyone think of the state being held in Memphis next year? Especially considering a Memphis team never makes it to the state tournament.
2Shooter4
Isn't Germantown near Memphis?
AdmiralJK
Obviously, Nashville would have made the most sense. Center of the state, easy travel for any and all schools involved. So that obviously explains why an organization that is beauracratic and government-like in nature would choose the most illogical option. Cubbyhole the entire Spring Fling in the farthest corner of the state for the next 5 years so it's as far away as possible for everyone except those in the Memphis area. A city farther away could not have been chosen for any teams from the East Tn (Johnson City,Kingsport) area, the Knoxville area, the Chattanooga area or the Nashville area. Let's hear it for the almighty dollar over logical, common sense. Maybe after the next 5 years are up TSSAA will actually decide to move it out of state. silverpie
Actually, Johnson City is farther from Nashville by road than Memphis is (281-212). Also, the financial difference betweenn the Memphis/Chattanooga bids and the Nashville/Jackson ones was substantial ($60k a year). And if Chattanooga had had a clue that TSSAA was contemplating an expansion of the state fields in baseball and soccer, they could easily have secured Central High and Camp Jordan to do the same. silverpie
Memphis only has it for one year, plus an option (which both sides must agree to) for two more. It will definitely go up for bid again in no more than three years.
OSHSman
Still, Memphis is very far away for teams from regions 1-8 to travel, fewer fans will be able to travel the 400+ miles to Memphis than to Nashville. What puzzles me is that they hold the football championships and the basketball state tournament in M'Boro (very close to Nashville and the middle of the state), but they stuff spring fling all way down in Memphis. Why don't just have it in M'Boro liek everything else? Also, wouldn't it make more sense to hold the basketball tournament in Memphis seeing how all the Memphis schools dominate that? Memphis schools usually only send a team to the baseball tourney in class AAA and maybe DII, so the 14 other teams will have to travel to the very south westerly corner of the state. That really makes sense. [Edited by OSHSman on 6/6/02 8:27P]
Froggy
This is another decision that makes the TSSAA look and sound "silly" for lack of a better term. It would have been much more logical for the Spring Fling to stay in Chattanooga (where it has been for years), or be held in the CENTER OF THE STATE, Nashville. Were the TSSAA officials looking for a week long trip to Tunica or what?
Bighurt
Unforunately, Murfreesboro did not bid for the Spring Fling. Memphis is a horrible choice but I is all about the MONEY.
Opperman
Why should Nashville/Mufreesboro get the state tournaments without offering a significant financial package? And OSHSman, the Memphis city teams don't make it to the state in baseball, but we've had a suburban team make it every year. The *ONLY* problem with Memphis as the host is that it's in a corner of the state. Chattanooga was in a corner of the state too. I agree that Nashville is the best place to hold the state tournaments...but that doesn't mean the TSSAA should ignore everything else. If Nashville didn't put together a good enough bid, and they didn't, then they shouldn't get it. Period. Memphis put together the best bid and has the best facilities. catsbackr
Apparently, the bid for the baseball portion of the Spring Fling made by Memphis had a few flaws in it. Neither of the two stadiums they quoted will be available for use during the week of Spring Fling. Maybe their bid wasn't quite as good as it first looked! pccoach
everyone is complaining about the travel to memphis but what about the memphis area teams that have had to travel chatt. every year? it has been tough on the west tn. teams with travel for along time. RHSfan
pccoach, Be thankful the Memphis area teams had to travel to Chattanooga EVERY year! By the way, it is a shorter distance from Memphis to Chattanooga than it is from Johnson City to Memphis, but that is water under the bridge!
