Spring Hill Football

Well this topic has gotten plenty of attention.

What a difference a year makes. Coach "D" was assistant coach of the year in the region last year and Coach McKnight was a contender for coach of the year. They couldn't have gotten that bad in one year! Could it be the players on the field?

The Spring Hill / Columbia area has plenty of talent. Spring Hill had enough talent at the back positions. IMO, they need lineman and a serious weight program to get them more physical.

Change could be a good thing. I would like to see them go after Cody Finley at Cheatham Co. He has done a great job with little talent the last few years. Another one to think about would be Danny Nowell. I believe he lives in the Spring Hill area now.

I agree wiith the underlined portion of your statement. When things aren't going your way it's really easy to point out the negative and completely forget about all the good things that have happened to this program and these kids. Things have been a lot worse and have improved over the years. Dedication and success is a commitment that has to be made by everyone associated with a program, school(system) and community. I would have to say some of that has been lacking.

In addition, for those of us that want to say SH is laden with talent..... Yes there are some athletic young men, there are also rules and boundaries that everyone must comply with, sometimes that is hard. And fortunately/unfortunately, the last time I checked it takes more than 2 or 3 talented players to make up a complete team. Based on my experience it's the little things that get the big things accomplished.

I keep reading Howard Stone's name on here, why would Spring Hill want a coach who tried really hard to transfer schools 3 weeks before the season started?

He also has some issues and concerns that maybe most in the area forgot about that might be the reason that the admin "won't give" him the head coaching spot

To ALL:

Mcknight is a good coach just not a good head coach. Next year will be interesting because everyone thinks this kid coming up has a big arm.... wish he did. He is accurate and smart but the physical gifts just dont seem to be there, watchout for some kids on that team who have had success at qb on other teams in the past stepping in and playing alot like a kid named hoath who played a little while back.

You're kidding right?---He can unload a football. When the game was out of reach vs DL in his FRESHMAN season you didn't happen to see some of the bombs he was throwing did you? A good group of receivers and he's set. He's got a good arm...I don't know who you're thinking of. Heck, he was the only reason we scored more than 3 points some games this year.

I am very sure that your facts are very wrong. Both Atkins and Hertzog quit at one point (a couple of years apart) for the same reason and it had nothing to do with QB's. Both had disagreements with Cox. I think lots of people did in those years.

I graduated the year before but I was around the school in between going to college that season. I know that his son never quit and was the starting QB for all three years he was at SHHS and then went on to play at West Point. I saw Chris a few weeks back at a SH football game in on leave from Iraq with his brother who is also a coach somewhere. Anyway, your story is off a little IMO.

I can tell you from personal experience you will never find a better teacher or coach than Atkins. He was always good to me and my family. He wrote a letter of recommendation that helped me get into college and I will always be thankful to him. I think some of your remarks are out of line. I know that both Herzog and Atkins have made a name for themselves since leaving SHHS (as has others) as high quality coaches so whatever grudge you may have against them is biased and has nothing to do with their coaching abilities.

I doubt either of them will want to come back to SHHS anyway. I'm sure Maury county does not pay enough for either of them now. We will end up with some young gun who has never been a head coach. Thats what happens when your team is way down. The only school in the county who has a booster program that can afford to bring in coaches who make the big bucks is Columbia Central. They have the resources to pay for whatever is needed.

You are right about needing a good people person. Both of those men were just that. Herzog maybe one of the best defensive minds in the state. I would love to see him come back to SHHS. I think he may have applied at one time for the position but didn't get it.

Like I said before, Cox had his faults. No doubt about that but he did produce a quality product until we moved up to AAAA. We have not had a solid program since those years and thats why the players from that time remember them. Stone was always a good coach too. I would hate to see him leave the school. You may not like it but those of us who played for those men still respect them and would love to see that type of program again. Like others have said repeatedly, the Raiders were feared back then. No one scheduled us for Homecoming back then except for Hickman County and we rocked their world for it!

I hear ya man. I'm guessing that (raiderteach) might just be a Mcknight guy. And if he is I will sum this real quick. Point blank Mcknight will go down as the WORST HEAD COACH IN SHHS history. This is not opinion it is FACT. Does that make him a bad guy NO but as a coach well his intentions may have been good but he just can't hack it (might stink to read Travis but it is true). But how much can you expect from a long snapper at the NAIA level that thinks he knows everything. As far as "D" he is not much better once more someone that thinks he knows everything but this is a guy that played one year of HS football then punched his coach (great role model). We would be blessed if we could get Atkins, Herzog or Cox for that matter. But I'm sure that not one of them is in SHHS's price range. Nuf said I'm out!

More important than his "big arm" is his "Big Heart"! Works harder than anyone else on the team. If a good QB coach had him, could probably go college. I heard he wears a 15 shoe size and he'll grow into it. Also hear he now runs 5.0-40 and is improving on that.

Some of his team mates have started calling him "B" Bow. GO GATORS!

I don't know whether or not they are capable of handling the switch or not--I agree with grizzlies--they didn't!

Fact is they would run the 'I" occasionally and pick up 4-6 yds per play. Then go back to the "spread" and pick up nothing and punt or go for it on 4th down.

No game plan!

It seemed as though the coaches weren't satisfied with 1st downs; they wanted a TD every play and if there Senior QB didn't score it was not a good play.

Offensive football is about 1st downs;.....and the TD's will come.

Sounds to me like you have a personal vendetta against Coach Mcknight and Coach "D".

I just hope they bring somone in from the outside. There is not anyone on the staff that is ready to be a Head Coach.

McKnight is a good guy, but I agree he probably wasn't head coach material yet.

Stone was interim Head Coach in 05 went 0-10, but that year under Stone is probably the reason they were 6-6 the following year and made the playoffs.

Not at all I'm just saying what a LOT of people have been thinking for years now. I never said that Mcknight was or is a bad guy, he is just not a good football coach. Way to many bad calls for way to long thats all. I just hope that the new guy cleans house and takes charge.
