WOW! WC77. You make it sound like this kid was a great lineman. I know this kid and he may be a great student and great mannered kid, BUT he is no football player. I don`t care how big you are, you have to be able to play the game and have some mean about you. I don`t think his dad was that upset about it. As far as the line coach, he is a good coach that cares about the kids. Their was other linemen that quit this year to, was it all his fault?

I helped with the youth program from 97 until 04 and owls1987 is pretty much on in his observations. I think the youth league should be teaching these kids the basics and fundamentals of the game and let them have fun and start molding them into fundamentally sound football players. I might have been one of the coaches that didn't like the "wing t" idea. I just taught kids the number of the holes and ran a two back set either "I" or split backs and made sure lineman knew how important thier footwork and blocking techiques were and ran plays. I think you should always base your offense on the players you have. If the players are fundamentally sound, they shouldn't have any problems picking up on different offenses @ the middle school and high school level.

We are all in this together and should support these players. We should try to talk with the ones who are not playing anymore and get them back.

What's everyone's take on Britton leaving Franklin Co.?

Nitro14, I agree with you on the wing T but I was willing to add some of his plays to my playbook to expose the kids to a different style. (We did score a few times when we called "waggle 8"!) Something else that may help would be to have coaching clinics for the youth league coaches. Not only to teach the coaches the basic fundamentals, but to also teach how to deal with young kids. There are a few coaches that you hear constantly screaming for these kids to "hit somebody". The problem is, they're not teaching the kids how to hit correctly. I know I'm getting off subject focusing on the youth league but I think we lose too many kids there that could've been a good ball player at the HS level. As for Britton leaving FCHS, I thought he'd get one more year. I think it's the "win now" syndrome. I don't see him coming back to WC though. I did find it interesting to see the post about him going to Cannon Co. as Head Coach. That would put him in the same region as Coach Maynord @ Smith County who also used to coach at Riverdale.

You should remember there are two sides to every story. The coach you referred to is a former UT player that gave much time and needed line coaching for 3 years. He should be appreciated for being very generous with his time. He was asked to coach. He did not seek the position.

There is no need to get into specifics here, but I have talked to the player's dad and been around his family. His dad is very unhappy about him not playing football, but knows any position is earned, not given because he showed up. I hope this one will miss football enough to come back and earn his own way.

Anyone that has played football knows that it takes a lot to motivate players in practice and in games. Coaches sometimes are misunderstood. This is a coach I will stand beside as well as all the other middle school coaches.

Well said! This boys dad is a fine guy and has helped with the youth league and the boy just wasn't motivated. I too, hope that he comes back and is ready to work hard. Coach Harris wouldn't let any player be mistreated and the middle school coaches WERE doing a fine job. Rackley was probably the toughest on the boys, but he knows the game and motivated them to the best of his ability and gave them a big hug when they made an outstanding play. My son played for them and thinks the world of all of them as do I. Football is a tough sport and the coaches should be tough as well.

I think Maynard left Smith Co. after just one season as was named the new Oakland head coach. He might join that staff and be back in the Boro. One things for sure, Steve won't be without a job long. If our administration wants to show people they are committed to improving our football program, they will go after him. That might cause some more "mad ons" but we have got to do what's best for the program and the boys.

Maynord's still the HC and Principal at Smith Co. He's been there about 10 years.

    • Hmmmmmm doe dee doe doe……sounds like they are leaving Geenback faster than the lawnmower will go in fifth gear.  Hmmmm….. you can bet the lawnmower on that.
    • West looked solid...excited to see this young group excel
    • When you have a school that right at 200 kids only half are going to be male and to get 25% of them to come out for football is a very hard task. Take away an 8th grade syatem and your you have another hill to climb up. If 5 kids are actually leaving your not going to have enough for practice. Your only chances for wins would be against the weakest of weak teams. At one time Greenback had kids coming across the wall like the Mexican Border and now their leaving town before sundown. A hugh mistake was made on not hiring Ryan back because of his ties to the community and his ability to bring in the right kids, not run them off. The last coach failed because he wasn't one of community so they go out and do it again. I'm sure Coach Clemmer is a good person because I do know people that do like him but he is caught in the middle of a fan base that will not support him no matter what and it could lead to a disaster if that many kids are leaving the program. The person that caused all of this mess has no business on the school board and needs to stick with hiding in the bushes giving out speeding tickets to out of towners coming through.
    • My outsider looking in perspective is Oliver Springs, Coalfield, Rockwood, and Harriman: fill out the top 4 good teams that beat up on the bottom and will all be in a good place to win in the 1st round with one team maybe making it farther. Midway: funnily enough in the middle an alright team that can beat the teams below them but not the top 4 misses the playoffs but still has a decent record. Oakdale, Greenback, Sunbright: round out the bottom each team has its problems and with a rough region and challenging non-conference records may not be pretty. Oakdale graduated lots of talent and experience, Greenback is in all sorts of internal turmoil with their new coach, and Sunbright small roster tough region not tons of Fb played. (Teams could be rearranged with other teams in their groups but this is how I see them finishing)
    • Kids quitting to focus on one sport could be a worry but multi-sport athletes transferring out would damage more than just football so I think the people who made this decision could find out they are going to get burned in multiple ways.
