Is region 9-2A really that weak?

*- Denotes a playoff team

Carver's Out of Region Schedule

Briarcrest Christian- Div. II-AA (4-6)

Bolivar- 3A (8-3)*

MUS- Div. II-AA (7-4)*

Evangelical Christian- Div. II-AA (8-4)*

Christian Brothers- Div. II-AA (8-3)*

Clarksdale, MS (8-2)*

Carver plays 5 playoff teams in higher classifications and 4 Div. II-2A teams. I don't think many 2A teams can come close to that out of region schedule. Do you blame them for having under a .500 record. I say they belong.

BTW's Out of Region Schedule

St. George's- Div. II-A (10-0)*

Trezavant- 4A- (4-7)*

Manassas- 1A- (8-3)*

Alcoa- 2A- (10-1)*

Milan- 2A- (9-2)*

Sheffield- 3A- (7-4)*

BTW play's 6 playoff teams including 3 time state champion Alcoa. Do you blame them for having under a .500 record. I say they belong.

Westwood's Out of Region Schedule

Fairley- 4A (8-3)*

Hardin Co.- 4A (7-4)*

Horn Lake, MS- 5A (4-7)

Dyersburg- 3A- (10-1)*

Memphis East- 4A (2-8)

Mitchell 3A- (8-3)*

Westwood plays 4 playoff teams and all the teams are above their classification. Do you blame them for having under a .500 record? I say they belong.

So of the 18 out or region games these 3 teams played.

15 out of 18 were playoff teams.

15 out of 18 were above their classification or a Div. II

Maybe this will give people a better understanding of how these teams made the playoffs with sub .500 records. They play a tough out of region schedule due to their location, and teams not wanting to come play them. You can't penalize them for playing against tougher competition. They win the games they need to get in the playoff just like all the other 2A schools in the state. Their region games are their easier games, while their out of region games are the tough ones. So give this region a break.

many of them have played a tough schedule...but playing great teams and lossing does not mean you are good or bad, just tha tyou had a hard schedule...playing the Titana does not mean they are good just because they lost to a grea tteam...the real test of how good they are will be seen in the playoffs against other 2A regions...so far they hav enot faired very well

Isn't Milan 10-1?

As I see it, Region 9 robbed at least 2 better teams elsewhere in the state an opportunity to make the playoffs.

I have a huge problem with 3-7 teams making it when teams like Adamsville and Humboldt did not make it with better records within a far tougher region.

I am sure there are other teams further east also who did not make it and would have crushed these Region 9 teams.

They have the same criteria as teams all across 2A to make the playoffs. Be in the top 3 of your region and your in. Every team knew the system when they went into it. They do not determine who is in their region. How about USJ, JCS, Trenton, or Humboldt volunteer to go play in that region? It would assure them of a playoff spot but that is not going to happen cause no one wants to go to Memphis and play.

There is no reason you should down these teams, who really don't get to play a competitive football season because they either play teams that are way above their caliber of play or way below. They never get a chance to see where they measure up until the playoffs where it is too late to make any adjustments or make improvements.

My question that has not been answered yet is, Was this new playoff sytem in place BEFORE teams made their schedules for this two year period? I am thinking not, looks playing up hurt this region and other teams this year and probably next year also.

yes this system was in place BEFORE schedules were made. it had to be because region games are scheduled first and then each school fills in its own non region schedule. When these schools made their schedules they knew the rules they were playing by

I'm pretty sure everyone already knew about the new playoff system when they made their 2 year commitments because I remember a discussion of just this subject when Camden sscheduled such a tough non-region schedule. We wouldn't have been talking about it then if the playoff system had not aready been announced. Hopefully the TSSAA will rethink seeding for next season so that teams are not punished for playing tough non-region competition, especially if they are in a region like 5-2A or 8-2A.

    • Wouldn't the easiest move be to move McCall up to HS Principal and have Gulley take over as MS Principal?
    • Bounder, you are correct. And it is so easy today. As a civilian today, I can check my 6th grade grandson’s grades in real time. 46 years ago as a young head coach, I knew who were my weak students and would do a weekly check. A decade and 1/2 later as an administrator, I would ask guidance for attendance, and grade reports as I did my own discipline reports. 5 years later I could run all those reports in a few minutes. today Text one the Secretaries and they can create a red flag report only printing the names with D’s and F’s or attendance and discipline issues. You are not even dealing with a whole team. The only problem with modern technology is someone who might not want to know.
    • No I didn't,  I just know jellico lost a few and should in playoffs tho....but they have alot coming in the next few yrs
    • The buck stops with the head coach, he should have know if any of his players  were not making the required grades. Either he has someone checking weekly before games and reporting to him or he should do it himself.
    • Freedom Prep has discontinued their football program. These are the teams that were on their schedule in case you are looking for a game:
