Science Hill: What will happen? (off-season thread)

Allow me to disagree, but I can make an argument that East Tennessee football is more dominant than the other parts of the state. In 2006, four (4) of the seven total State Champions came from East Tennessee; while three (3) of the five public State Champions came from East Tennessee...more specifically the Knoxville area. In 2005, two (2) schools won public State Championships, with one border school, Livingston, playing in a Knoxville region, making the unofficial total three (3). In 2004, three (3) State Champions came from East Tennessee. Those records seem to indicate that East Tennessee football is certainly more successful than the two other parts of the state.

While you need not reply with your statement about East Tennessee "as a whole", remember that the winningest program in the entire state (Kingsport) resides in East Tennessee, as well as the last USA Today Player of the Year (Todd Collins, Jefferson County) from Tennessee. East Tennessee has also had more schools ranked for longer on the USA Today Super 25 list since its inception.

Add to all of this the Middle Tennessee bias that has existed since the T$$AA began operations. For further reading on that subject, just check the Mr. Football/Basketball candidates every year.

Great post.

Personally, I think Smith talked his way into the Science Hill job. I think the main reason Smith is getting so much flack is because he came in talking big and loud and full of pride! He kept telling everyone how much he knew about football and what all he was going to do and he quit simply didn't back it up on the field. If he would have came in, kept his head down and said we are going to work hard and do the best we can, it wouldn"t have been so bad. But, when you come in and say, "we should have Sullivan South 40-0 and half time", there's a problem. I agree, Smith is a nice guy but he doesn't belong at Science Hill. Just my opinion on what I saw and heard.

What is the problem with East Tennessee football in general? First Marty Euverard leaves Oakland with a state championship for Jeff County and kids quit and the community blames him for trying to fix the problems. Then Scott Smith leaves a very good Indy. program for Science Hill and people are now pointing fingers at Smith. Have you people ever stoped to think that you would not have hired these men if you didn't have "MAJOR PROBLEMS" with your football programs? While I am not in East Tennessee this sounds like when a coach puts discipline into a program it's ok until my little Johnny gets his tailed chewed for doing something wrong. Get out of Smith's way and allow him to coach the team his way. There may be a reason that as a whole East Tennessee (Maryville and Alcoa are good) high school football is not as strong as other areas of the state.

You don`t know jack about East Tennessee football

Science Hill ended the season with a dissapointing 3-7 record, their worst since a 4-6 campaign 4 years ago. They could've easily been 9-1, 8-2, or 7-3, with Dobyns Bennett and Sullivan South being the only teams who didn't beat them in the last minute. There were flashes of the offensive excitement Coach Smith brought to Johnson City with blowout wins over Elizabethton, Morristown West, and Sevier County. Wins slipped away from the Toppers in the last few minutes of an unheard of 5 games this year. It started with a TD on the last play from scrimmage against Tennessee High, then the season tanked with losses to Knox Bearden, Jefferson County, Campbell County (Jacksboro), Knox Karns, and of course Dobyns Bennett for the 14th time in 13 years. BUT to dwell on the past is pointless, because next season will be here soon enough and the records will all be 0-0 once again.

There are a lot of seniors departing this science hill team: 1 Cory Brown(LB), 2 Tomas Hill(QB), 3 A.J. Hart(DB), 4 Matt Hayes(DB), 7 Javan Joslin(WR/DB), 14 Phillip Denton(WR), 17 Will Henry(DB), 22 Rodney Smith(LB), 29 Randal Greene (WR), 40 Solomon Duanah (TB), 44 Aaron Trent(LB), 50 Corey Hamilton(LB), 55 Nick Robinette(OL), 56 Matt Lipsius(DL), 62 Stu Seiferth(OL), 63 Ben Verzi(OL), 64 Evan Lilly(OL), 70 Charley Zou(OL), 75 Jeff Fields(OL), 80 Ben Wiley(WR), 81 Tucker Anders (LB, Holder), 88 Ryan Arze(FB). 22 kids. Most of them were on the field a good amount this year. 22 Kids is a football team in its self. They will be missed, but there are kids to fill their positions in the underclass and yet another QB controversy is going to be the talk of the town. Most recently, there was the Sharp-Hill, controversy, before that came the Tucker-Hill battle, and before that, Tucker and Robert Frye battled with Justice Joslin slipping in to play QB as Brandon Shoun had broken his hand.

The skill positions will be pretty much wrapped up but there is not a clear-cut QB ready to win the job. Tyler Pritchard played JV this season and brings mobility and toughness to the position but his size is a question. he is a 5'9 160lb athlete who will enter his junior year. Daniel Norris is a southpaw upcoming sophomore who took freshmen and JV snaps this year. He has some height, but isn't very thick. Neither of the players have any attitude or discipline problems. They are both extremely calm in their demeanor on and off the field. There won't be an upperclass QB unless Daniel Sharp returns to the team. The invitation was left open by Coach Smith and the staff.

At running back and wide receiver, There will be a lot of familiar faces on the field. Armando Canepa, who will be a junior, and moses green, who will be a senior, both rushed the ball when Solomon Duanah was off the field catching his breath. Green is a hardnosed, between the tackles runner, while Armando is more of an elusive player. Ashlon Adams is a physical specimen who plays both wide receiver and running back. He also plays basketball. He will be a senior. Isaac Kinley is a tough runner who has speed and power, another basketball player. It's a great mix when his head is in the game. He will double as a defensive back. Corey MacPherson and Greyson Janeway will look to get more PT at wideout, alongside Larry Smith(basketball) and Adams or Kinley. They are all versatile players. Corey started at defensive back against South but played wideout all season and has played quarterback during his career. He and Greyson both play baseball. Wes Forbush is a 6'2 safety and he is in the class of MacPherson and Janeway: they are upcoming juniors.

There are a lot of slots open on the defensive side of the ball and on the offensive line. Who will be playing where on the Topper D and O lines? And who will play linebacker for the Toppers? Expect Jeff Green, Josh Lewis, Logan Honeycutt, and Michael Sholes to get looks at linebacker. Defensive backs will most likely be Kinley, Skylar Dejesus, and Forbush. Bruce Crumley, Will Rentel, and Seth Williams will all be down linemen for the D. Does anyone have any more specifics such as special teams, starters, subs, and coaching information?

To clarify, Kinley is actually not playing basketball this year for undisclosed reasons, neither is (LB) Zach Jordan. Whoever declared TOMAS HILL to be a FRESHMAN has had a bit of exposure to wishful thinking. With 6 senior linemen leaving, who will play on the offensive line for Science Hill? Names that have been recently tossed around include Joel Shrum and Andrew Chaudron but who else has the quality skills? Also, Forbush could be looking at playing QB in spring ball if Tyler Pritchard and Daniel Norris pursue baseball. He has played QB in his career but took his varsity snaps at free safety this season, and as a JV wide receiver. Alot of young talent coming up this year could be the key to success if Coach Smith puts it where it needs to be. As an upcoming 2008 Topper Grad and the beneficiary of 4 years of memorable high school football, I wish the team well and hope that they succeed in their upcoming seasons.

I thought Tomas Hill was a freshman /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

T. HILL was a freshman.......... 4 YEARS AGO.. the only time this current group of departing seniors beat a DB team was when he was under center for a 4-4 freshman squad that featured Solomon Duanah ripping through every team that they played. He single handedly won those games because of the difference in size, speed, and athleticism. Those were the days lol we hardly passed more than 5 times a game. The call in the huddle was "pitch right, Solomon TD" or "Counter Left, Solomon TD"....

If you're wondering about a freshman QB, you're probably thinking of D-NO. Daniel Norris. Being called the prodigy already, but needs more developement. He will come along in a couple years and hopefully do some special things.

You might want to include Bearden in the category of teams that dominated them and not in the category of teams that beat them in the last minute

SH led 7-6 @ the half. Then came the typical SH 2nd half melt-down. Bearden capitalized on miscues and scored 14 points. Then they grinded it out, as not to give the hilltoppers the ball back. That is hardly "Domination". Though they didn't beat the Toppers in the last minute, the Bulldogs didn't run them off the field altogether either. Last year's homecoming disaster where Bearden won 41-13 was more "domination". And the score didn't reflect how bad the game was.
