Sorry about that. That's the score I was given. I had it 37-36, those grapplers from EL can bridge. I was told one of the matches we wresstled and loss was a forfit.

The 160 from Smyrna won.

Yeah, we have some work to do in our heavier weights but they all have potential.

  • 2 weeks later...

Now that we are at the half-way point of the season... How does everyone feel about Region 8? Who are we looking at as the top teams from here... and does it look like we have any state medalers?

IMO the top teams are

Hendersonville

Beech

Mt. Juliet

Springfield

In that order... anyone see it differently?

It depends on who actually shows up?

I will say we are capable of finishing near the top

if not the top. ALL the kids must be wrestling, we must

have a full roster, and they all must be healthy and

uninjured. That's a tall order for our team now!

We have lost to Spring. 2x (I think) by 3 pts?????

Upset Beech

Beat MJ, but that usually happens the first time, they

seem to recover and beat us the second time??

If we can have all the starters for the match (healthy), we

could prevail. Time will tell.

Like I said in previous posts......Region 8 is not a tough

region. We keep sending them to state, but very few

do well.

U know I don't know about our region.

When the Commandos wrestled at Knox Chatolic tourney my grappler beat all (3) his x reg -2 foes. One of them place high at the Bradley Cen tourney.

I been in and around this sport since 1973 wrestling for Neely's Bend Beaver's in middle school and prior to that having uncles on the mats for Father Ryan.

The teams in Region 8 are as good as teams from reg 2 and most other regions.

Now indiv grapplers is another story. There are 3 or 4 commandos that could make some noise in the next 2 years but will have to make the addditional efforts to go to the next level. I'm sure a few other teams have a few.

What a lot of folks don't understand is the commitment that some of these grapplers make to make that next step. When my boys wrestled in Knoxville there was a group of kids traveling to Atlanta every weekend, to get extra mat time against the best kids in the south. Other's spend there summers at the elite camps that our sport offers.

This all takes time and money.

I have not heard of parents doing this in our region and it might happen. I know a few wrestle in the summer at some at the National Tourneys and on State Teams. Again time and money.

Some are blessed with that special gift to be the best without that additional time and money being spent. However that is few and far in between.

With that all being said the State Champs/Finalist and medalist (10) that I saw come out of my older son's school also stayed late to get extra mat time, got up early and ran and did every thing that would give them an edge against the comp.

I see some of that same dedication out of a few of the Commando's and feel that they may make this region proud prior to their graduation.

    • Never said I thought it was a smart decision. I'm scratching my head at it too.
    • If he wanted to play QB he should have either went to Heritage or William Blount and had a real good chance there. In stead he'll be exactly what he was going to be at Maryville. They already know who their QB is going to be in 2025 and it ain't going to be him.
    • Easier said than done. The man who ran for 250+ yards and 3TDs is gonna be back….and a lot bigger.
    • plus it removes the pressure around winning.
    • You are correct.   The teacher's pay scale is virtually the same in Knox County, now, as it is at Oak Ridge.   The coaching supplements are still higher at Oak Ridge, from what I was told, but not a huge difference.   Plus, Rusty is going from a position coach to an OC position, which is what he was at South Doyle and where his comfort zone is.  And from a special education teaching slot to a PE teaching slot.  There is a lot of positivity in that move without even considering the coaching aspect.   Anybody who sees something negative here is just looking for negativity to begin with.  But some live in that world.   Really good hire for Brent.  He now has two experienced and quality coordinators and can concentrate on being a head football coach.
