Hose Job on Warrior Hill last night

There is not a school that hasn't had a problem with the clock operator at one time or another. A lot schools are known for their "homer" operators. If someone wasn't a "homer" bet they wouldn't be running the clock for long. Not saying anyone would do it on purpose but has anyone heard of a "visitor" operator. Not me. People make mistakes. Opertors are people, refs are people (well most of them), coaches are people and the players are people. All of these are important factors that determine the outcome of a game. Not one but all. In the HV game, what about the missed foul shots by Elizabethton, the missed lay-ups, the poor defense. All this comes into play. Not one single event determines the final score but the combination of many. Put the blame on where it belongs, the people.

I was there watching with my eye on the clock as well as the player. I honestly believe he got it off. There was no two dribble. There was no turn, pause and shoot.

Yes, the clock keeping was bad, plain bad at spots during the game. Did it have an effect in the final outcome? In my humble, honest opinion - NO. I actually think there should have been two more seconds on the clock based on mistakes made earlier in the game. There will always be that out, and I hate to be a butt about this, but this grand theft stuff about Friday has got to stop! I heard whining and moaning about it today from people who kept arguing the two-dribble thing. Even when I mentioned today -- check out the video!

Will any of us ever see a shot like that again? Probably not. Was it legit? Yes it was. Am I saying that it was legit because I'm caught up in the moment and blind to seeing just him making that shot? He** no. If it were a player from the orange team making the shot and the gripes coming from the maroon side, I'd say the same thing.

I just hate it that Jake Hodge hits this awesome shot. The shot of his life. And instead of celebrating what he did, there's the dribble case. I knew Friday night that he did not dribble that ball. Anybody who truly watched him Friday night knew he did not dribble that ball. Seeing video evidence Saturday, my view was confirmed.

With that said. I was relieved to get on here and read some of you saying that people should look at other stuff with reference to the outcome of the game. The free throws, defense, etc.

I just don't think folks should diminish what a kid did. In the offseason, if we're not happy with clock operaters - And trust me there are more than a handful people should look at - lets write columns, let's petition the TSSAA to have officials doing that job. We have these officials that ref JV games. Why can't one of them stay to do one game and have the other ref do the other game, or one do both?

You know acdc is right. The kid, Jake Hodge, made an outstanding play which should not be diminished. He won the game with a sportscenter type shot.

The clock operator issue has been brewing on warrior hill for quite some time, as a number of people on here have confirmed. Who knows how much time should have been on the clock?

Nobody. It was that screwy all night long, all the way up to the end. I personally do not think HV got its TO called before the clock went to 0.0. But the officials ruled they had and put 0.6 on the clock and Jake Hodge made the most of it. Great job by that young man. I still cannot understand why EHS didnt have someone on the ball on the throw in. Seemed they were all standing around, afraid to foul. Oh well, its been a disappointing year for the EHS boys team, and the ending to this game cements that fact even further.

Speaking of "hose jobs".... Did anyone see the Lady Vols game against Rutgers last night? I was embarrassed as a Vol fan by what went on in that game. Rutgers played their tail off and with time running out, the Lady Vols missed a shot, got the offensive rebound, missed the put back, and then got the rebound. At this moment, the Clock clearly paused on .2 seconds at which time a Rutgers player fouled the rebounder then the clock restarted and time ran out. If their was no pause of the clock, the foul was clearly after time should of already expired. The Ref's reviewed the footage and determined there was still .2 seconds on the clock when the foul occured.... NO DUH, the clock had stopped!!! I am the biggest diehard UT fan around, but I felt terrible for the Rutgers players because they had that game stolen from them by a pathetic time keeper and a worse officiating crew.

I agreed Rutgers got hosed !!!

However, I don't know if there is any rule in place that would allow them (officials) to fix the timing issue. They have no timing device to determine the amount of time that expired. They must have definite knowledge that the time expired. I think that a case book play is needed for this situation where the clock stops when it should not and a video monitor is available for the officials. The officials need a timer (on the monitor) that is external from the game clock that continues to run. This would allow them to fix this play.

My two cents - Tennessee committed hwy robery !!

I did a little more reading and apparently the SEC and other major conferences equip the Ref.'s with some type of remote device which automatically stops the clock at the sound of a whistle. That appears to be the excuse being used. The only problem I have with this is that is you watch the video, the Ref under the goal clearly signals the foul after the clock has delayed then restarted. Anyway, doubt that anything will be done, but I don't like to ever see my team get a victory they did not earn.

The officials have a device that is connected to the whistle that tracks the air being blown out, not the sound of the whistle. Keeps the device from picking up whistles in the stands. If you watch early college games, you'll see the clock stop often, as the officials are not to speed on being in shape and the huffing and puffing will set it off.

Hats off for a great shot at the end of the game. That one play did not beat the Cyclones. There is a saying that a road team must beat the home team by 20 to win by 2. In my years of playing and coaching, I have seen a lot of situations. There have been officials who have sons or nephews playing in the same game they call, or refs played ball for the school in which they are calling. Things are going to happen that are out of your control. I do agree that during tourney time, there needs to be an official keeping the clock and official book. JV and Frosh seasons are over now and it would do the younger guys good to see some action and get paid. But to say that someone got hosed? A team should not be in position to have that happen. When it does happen.....you have to go back and look at the whole game and see what a team DID NOT capitalize on and put themselves in that position. It's like trying to say that an individual player cost a team the game. You win and lose as a team. Why do you think that the NFL has instant replay, and sometimes still does not get the right call. We are human and humans are going to make mistakes, to the dismay of some. High school sports is the last "raw" entertainment game without technology and replays. If you want devices to control the game, then be prepared to spend about $45-$60 bucks to see these games (that's what it costs to see the LadyVols) to help pay for the added technology. This is the time of year where everyday 10-20% of teams across the state are calling it a season, and this game was not the only game that had it's share of controversy, and I assure you that this thread will not be the only one talking about how a team or school got hosed. At the end of the day, a lot of hard work and LUCK goes into a State Champion!!! GOD BLESS and good luck to all!!!!!

That makes sense. I'm glad I'm not responsible for running up and down the floor with one of those whistles in my mouth. It'd take about 6 hours to play a game..... /roflolk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflolk:" border="0" alt="roflolk.gif" />

Yeah, me too, Cascade. I think I can get us a deal on a couple of pairs of roller-skates. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
