Metal Cleats in High School

I have heard that TSSAA is allowing the use of metal cleats in softball this year. Will this cause alot of unnecessary injuries? Does the good outweigh the bad? I believe there will be more injuries as the result of sliding into the bases and getting the cleats caught in the ground and injuring an ankle or knee outweigh the benefits of getting more traction. How do you feel?

Why? Were the 'other kinds' of shoes not gettin' it done? I've never heard a complaint from the players or a recommendation for metal from anyone. Must be another Title IX thang. /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Actually it is a new National Federation rule this year. The TSSAA abides by all national federation rules. Personally I don't like it.

I know this isn't about metal cleats but i have a question & need help. My daughter is playing High School ball this year & I'm not sure what the regulation is for bats & balls. Is there a TSSAA link I can go that will give me an approved equipment/bat list?? Any help would be appreciated!

I'm pretty sure high school follows ASA requirements for equipment. You can find information on ASA approved equipment on their site.

Thank you! Her friends told her that they didn't think she could use her double wall bats. As long as they are ASA approved it should be alright. Correct?

Check with your coach. I think they still use the K-master ball.

Try these links to the National Federation of High State School Associations. The tssaa uses their rules unless amended.

This one has the rule changes for 2008.

The asa site is:

There is a non-approved bat list on that site.

This is commonly called HIGHJACKING a thread. Start another one if you're not talking about metal spikes.

Those sites talk about metal cleats too. /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Frankly...I don't see how they have kept girls from wearing metal cleats all of this time when boys were wearing them. The only injury I have seen from wearing them was last year in a college game...one of our players broke her ankle when her cleat caught on home plate. I don't think that would have happened with rubber cleats. I really don't think it's a big deal.

It might not be a big deal to you , but it probably is to the girl who broke her ankle.

    • No reasonable lawyer would take up this case. I am not a lawyer, but I know school law in and out.  Similar situations just like this play out thousands of times each year across the country, even at the college level (i.e. Ole Miss)  The Plaintiff's never win...ever.  If I am wrong, please provide a legal precedent for me. I will be waiting.  https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/39431892/judge-drops-ole-miss-player-lawsuit-lane-kiffin
    • Yes Justin Cruse was named head coach
    • It used to be, I think it still is, a change of 20% +/- gives reason to reclassify. Schools can choose to play up classifications but not down. Here is the mid cycle reclassification info on TSSAA.org When Memphis East changed from a regular public school to an "all-optional" school in 2017 the would've dropped to A but chose to stay in AAA in basketball (baseball, and softball) Penny was still coaching there and with the players they had they would've beaten A teams by 40 and slept walked to the championship. Other Memphis schools stayed in their classifications (mostly in basketball) until the next reclassification cycle. Of course this is the same time that a 4th class was added basketball.
