Maryville was not an athletically superior team. But what they did have was intense concentration and focus. To win that many games straight takes a tremendous amount of dicipline. That focus (or the lack of) is what cost THS the loss to Volunteer. It's what cost South the loss to G'ville. Their athletic abilities notwithstanding. A loss to either of these teams before week 10 will be due to a lack of focus. It's one thing to get up for one big game, but yet another to do it week after week. Once again we must elevate our game another notch to compete at the next level. And sustain that intensity for the duration. That takes leadership. The '08 MLC will be won by leadership.

Not to mention coaching.

It's difficult for me to place North, Unicoi Co. and Central higher up on the list.

Comp, have seen the 2009-12 classification proposal on TSSAA's website? I think each plan has its highs and lows. Should be interesting for schools like Unicoi, Johnson Co., Elizabethton, and North. I imagine North and Elizabethton would probably appeal if the 4 Classification plan goes through.

So much talk about how strong THS will be. I personaly do not think they will be that great. Think about their offense. They got smacked around by a very average Volunteer team in the playoffs. If Volunteer can stop Shepherd, then you know South can. South has just as good, if not better, athletes than THS. THS also took a big hit on defense to graduation. The Rebs will have an outstanding backfield this year. Mark it down right now South wins their fourth conference crown. THS will battle Betsy, Johnson County, and East for the remaining spots. I do give the Vikes the edge for 2nd place. I also look for Central to be improved.

Good Luck to All

I really dont have a dog in this hunt but I took notice of your description of Volunteer's team last year as "average". They got out of the gates very slow last year (which seems to be a theme of theirs lately) but after that I would put them up against of your teams in the mountain conference.

That's about the dumbest thing you would ever do lol You could hang with Unicoi or Sullivan Central for a little bit but I would put my money on THS, SS, Eliz, and J County Over 4 quarters of play any day. The Tennessee High game was a fluke and i bet if you played them 10 more times after that game it wound not be close.

I think Volunteer was a lot better than Sullivan Central and Unicoi last year. I'm not quite sure what you mean by Eliz.......they did not have any quality wins last year.

Historically 'Betsy is just shy of a powerhouse in NET. Five years have gone by since they were a player. In '07 they had a Jeckyl and Hyde team with very low morale but talent laden nontheless. They bring back much of that team. They gave South fits until the chips were down then the morale thing took over. '08 will be a different story. Their backfield is top shelf.

Fluke my BUTT! The best prepared team won that game plain and simple. I would love to have those two same teams go up against each other 10 more times I think it would disprove your fluke theory. I never said we would win all the games I just said I would have put them up against anyone in your conference at that point in the season. Then you reference Eliz on here? I would take your money on that bet all day long on as many quarters as you wanted to bet.

    • Congratulations to Huntingdon and Station Camp. Lots of good softball in Tennessee. Alcoa been media favorite last two seasons.
    • Im more of a Basketball follower than football and like I said we play what we have, there is no going and recruiting or even talking kids into transferring…..and to rebut about Memphis teams in finals I’ve watched Memphis East and Penny Hardaway with the enrollment of a single A team play up and dominate any and all challengers for years! They aren’t the only ones either Mike Miller and son at Germantown put together that super team a couple years ago that ran through the rest of the state! Other teams from Memphis or Chatt or Nash or any large populated area pop up and are relevant out of nowhere every year because they get an influx of talent be it from a new coach or AAU affiliations it happens in football also just like any other sport! I hope these two schools that close join together and get to play the team you support, then you may see it differently! I find it funny some of you think recruiting and resources don’t matter . The county schools get very little funding also but you don’t want to get me started on that part!
    • In a total classless move, Coach Simmons once again shows his true colors. Waits till the day after school is out to let everyone know he is leaving. Fails up to a community college job after a lackluster 2 year span at GH. And do not tell me about the state run that saved a sub .500 season and plenty of whippings by Cookeville and Lebanon.  Looks like the girls job at GH is cursed. Terrible MS program/coaches feeding what is turning out to be a joke of a HS team.
