Shane Pinkelton, 39 year-old father of former standout player Jestin Pinkelton and stepfather of current standout player Treavor Thaxton, passed away this afternoon unexpectedly. Please keep the family of this great guy, husband, father and unselfish supporter of the Greenbrier athletic program in your prayers. Much of our community is in shock.

This is terrible to hear. Will keep his family and the entire Greenbrier football family in my thoughts and prayers tonight.

When I first read this, I thought surely not. It doesn't seem possible. But sadly, I find it's true.

I didn't know Shane personally, but I could pick him out in the crowd. He was Jestin's biggest supporter, and was very proud of Treavor too. It was written all over him. Even though I had never introduced myself to him, he stood next to me at the stadium at the Springfield scrimmage and struck up a conversation with my grandchild. It just seemed the kind of guy he was, to never ignore a child. It is Greenbrier's loss that this geniunely nice guy has been taken far too soon. My prayers go out to all of his family and friends.

It is truly unbelievable that Shane Pinkelton has passed away. I had wondered why his website had not been updated after the DeKalb game, and then realized I didn't see him at that game. He was a great source of information and and details on his website. http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=gbbobcats

Shane's enthusiasm for Greenbrier Football was priceless to watch, but his role as a leader, a father and a true man among men will be what stands out in my mind. He honestly cared about the kids around him, and helping them have drive and determination to get up and finish the game, with all they had.

Shane has his finished this game of life admirably. He helped better young men through coaching them in sports and giving them words of inspiration they will never forget.

Thank you, Shane, for what you've given us in Greenbrier and to our kids. You will not be forgotten.

I'm sorry for leaving Easton out. There's also a stepdaughter, too, I think, but I don't know her name.

GBCat2, I waited and waited on you to post the initial announcement, but thought it would be better to go ahead last night and let people know. Our phone rang off the hook yesterday with people calling us to tell us about this terribly sad loss. I always try to be sensitive to the children and really wrestled with even putting this topic on. But, to me, prayer is about the only thing people can offer during a time like this and I knew people would respond to this. I can't imagine. God is good, though, and will see them through if they'll just lean on Him. It still breaks my heart.

He was a behind-the-scenes kind of guy and will be sorely missed.

God bless...and thanks for posting.

5Sport, it's one of those things that takes a little time for the mind to wrap around. You are right, he was behind the scenes, but a difference maker. I am really hoping there will be a scholarship fund with his name on it somewhere in the future for Bobcat players. His name deserves to be remembered because God took a good one. It sure puts a different perspective on what's important. Right now, the only thing that will make a difference is prayer.

    • Never said I thought it was a smart decision. I'm scratching my head at it too.
    • If he wanted to play QB he should have either went to Heritage or William Blount and had a real good chance there. In stead he'll be exactly what he was going to be at Maryville. They already know who their QB is going to be in 2025 and it ain't going to be him.
    • Easier said than done. The man who ran for 250+ yards and 3TDs is gonna be back….and a lot bigger.
    • plus it removes the pressure around winning.
    • You are correct.   The teacher's pay scale is virtually the same in Knox County, now, as it is at Oak Ridge.   The coaching supplements are still higher at Oak Ridge, from what I was told, but not a huge difference.   Plus, Rusty is going from a position coach to an OC position, which is what he was at South Doyle and where his comfort zone is.  And from a special education teaching slot to a PE teaching slot.  There is a lot of positivity in that move without even considering the coaching aspect.   Anybody who sees something negative here is just looking for negativity to begin with.  But some live in that world.   Really good hire for Brent.  He now has two experienced and quality coordinators and can concentrate on being a head football coach.
