Late hit rule?

What is the rule on a late hit on a QB after a pass is off? Last night against Westview, our QB was getting pounded into the ground by late hits. I saw one of the Westview players take 3-4 steps after the ball was away from the QB and still leveled the QB. The ref told our coaches that after a pass is off, a QB is live play for 1 second. Is this correct or was the ref wrong?

Not sure on the rule, but the kid that kept tackling the qb to the ground late in the game was Freshman Colton Nanney. I watched all of those and I can tell you that the Ref in the white hat watched each one cause I was wondering if he was going to throw a flag.

I would also be very upset if I were that qb. Nobody picked up those guys that were pounding him in the padding of 3 inch grass. A qb unprotected is a qb that will not be playing very long. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

I agree. The OLine was not pass blocking well AT ALL. The late hit I was referring too was early in the game. It was right before halftime or right after the half. It was on one of our touchdown's, I believe. The DE knew the ball was gone and just kept coming and then leveled him. However, the official said the QB is live play for 1 second, lol...

I wish we had those refs back in 1997 in the state championship game against Tyner....One of our players hit the Tyner QB right as the ball left his hands, the pass was incomplete and it was 4th down...The ref watched the ball fall to the ground and then threw the flag....Tyner got a first down and went on to score the game-winning TD with a little over a minute to play and won 13-10....Still think of that call everytime I see a roughing the passer penalty...

P & G - that would stink for lack of a better word. A huge game decided by a poor judgement.....

id say the rule is pretty up in the air. my oppinion is if you have to take MORE than ONE step you should pull off, 1 step is fine. but if you can take more than 1 step then you have time to get out of the way. unless the qb is running the option and is pitching it, then you punish the qb!

Personally, I think the qb is part of the field of play. If he does not want to get hit, then he should sit the bench. There are 11 people on offense and 11 on defense, sometimes depending on if the Refs are playing as well ... so statistically the qb has to get hit sometimes. 1 step or 4 steps ... he is on the field and has to take some hits. /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

fg1, those refs were clueless last night in different parts of the game. They were bad against us as well as against ya'll. I'll tell you something else that I was told by a reliable resource that was pretty funny. There was around 2:05 left in the game and we were yelling for a time out. Of course, we didn't get the time out until 1:50 left on the clock although they did move it back to 2:00. The point in me saying that is the fact that the one ref told our coaches that he was not in position to be able to hear a time out but yet he was half way in between our sideline and where the play was occurring, lol. What did he expect, us to let the clock run out and not worry about calling a time out? There was also some pass interference calls against Westview that were REALLY iffy but there was some that were legit.

I have been to a few games this year. Last nights game was for the most part ... there were only two Refs calling 76% of the penalties last night. The Ref you are referring to was one of them. It's not the Ref's fault though. Refs are out there to make the calls that they see. Last night, apparently, there were players making poor decisions just in those certain parts of the field. The teams have to ignore the Refs and play their game better. /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Well, as I remember the qb last night was hit in his chest a great majority of the time. I will check when I watch the replay on Channel 11 tonight.
