in the post-season the official clock is not kept by the ref its by the press box

 

so when the clock hits zero game over

 

lauren had 6 seconds to take the free kick plus the closest shelbyville player was 12 to 13 yards away

 

she could hit it but i think she run out gas and forgot where she was and the time

 

columbia had there chances in the 2nd half but shelby lamb did great job in goal

 

 

 

Thanks for the response. It was just a strange way to end the game. It was a hard fought, exciting match though. I thought Columbia really stepped it up in the second half, but you are right, the Shelbyville goalie did have a lot of good stops.

I thought it was a hard fought game. I really thought that Columbia outplayed Shelbyville in the 2nd half. Thanks for the compliments pretaining to the Shelbyville goal keeper. She has had a lot of fun playing this season.

For anyone that was there to see the game, does anyone know the way the rule reads about the way the game ended? Columbia was lining up for a direct kick as the clock wound down. The girl was waiting for the referee to signal that she could kick, the horn sounded on the clock and he blew the whistle for game over without ever letting her kick. Just curious.

 

Did not see game, but am wondering too what is the official protocol (or if there even is one). Games held at Bearden uses the clock as the official time, once it hits 0:00 half/game over, but at other fields such as Farragut or West, final two minutes are kept by the ref. Another format, Oakridge counts up to 45:00, but final two minutes are kept by ref as well (for those of us challenged with simple math, can be complicated /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blink:" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> ).

I was at the game and it looked to me that she just didn't take the shot before time expired. it was a well played, well officiated game. Good luck to both teams.

That raises a question. I've seen many times that a player steps in front of the ball (within the 10 yard zone) but begins to back up (slowly). They are moving away, but perhaps not fast enough for the player with the ball who might want to take a quick restart. Is this wrong or allowed? I always thought it was a good move on their part.

 

I believe the rule states that you must give 10 yards... I think the enforcement of that rule (or interpretation) is up to the ref.

 

The state games have the clock kept on the scoreboard, too. I believe it is up to the host school, and the fact that they must have a clock keeper that knows how and when to start and stop the clock.

Obviously up to the ref. One of my pet peeves (I know there are many) is that when the game is on a "multipurpoe" field that is marked off in five yard increments how there seems to be no recognition that the ball is directly on one of these markings and the official moves the defending wall back precicely between the next two markings. Is 10 yards farther in football than futbol?

The columbia player had time to get the shot off. I think it was amatter of getting to the spot on the field were the kick was going to take place.This was at the end of the game and she had to be really tired. She got the shot off and it went wide right.

She got it off after time had expired. It would have not counted if it had went in.

and also she was in a position where she would have had to kick with her left foot

There were a couple instances where the clock was running when it shouldnt have been like after Brown's injury and after she got off the field when the clock continued for ten seconds or more while the ref was re-doing a drop kick. Not saying the outcome of the game would have changed, but ten+ seconds could had made a slight difference in the ending

Im the clock operator . I WAS TOLD TO STOP THE CLOCK ONLY WHEN THE REF HELD HIS HANDS IN THE AIR AND HAD THEM CROSSED. I WAS TOLD TO RESTART IT ON HIS WHISTLE. YOU NEED TO NO THESE THINGS BEFORE YOU TALK ABOUT THE CLOCK.
