WOW! I didn't realize that s'town had 4 seniors. Does any of them start? They looked pretty good at the Wayne Co. summer camp. They were really scrappin of course s'town has always been known for their hustle. Who is C'wood playin saturday?

Look for Collinwood, who has won the last two championships, and Summertown to fight for first. Never overlook Wayne Co. and Perry Co. Collinwood has maybe the most balanced scoring starting five in the district. Big question is the play of their bench. The big question for Summertown is scoring. They struggled at times to score many points in camp this summer. They do play pressure defense though. I think Collinwood will be overlooked by many teams because of the loss of Andrews and Daniel. Should be an interesting year as always in 12A.

I agree that it will be an interesting year. Seems like some people have got S'town and C'wood locked in as 1 and 2 in the district(In any order). But you definately cannot count W'boro and Perry Co. out. Wayne Co. was region champions last year. They did suffer a lot from losing 4 seniors; however, Wayne Co. can get into a scoring rhythm at times but they also go into slumps. And Perry Co. has good outside shooters but they didn't have much height. But we will just have to wait a few more weeks and see! It should be a great year. It will be good to see how teams have coped with losing great players. Good luck to every team in 12a! Hopefully one of you can make another state appearance.

For those of you hardcore 12A fans who asked, here you go. I hope you enjoy.

District 12A

For the first time in a long time, there is no clear-cut favorite in District 12A. The big four (Collinwood, Perry County, Summertown, and Wayne County) of course will once again advance to the Region 6A Tournament. However, that is the only thing that is for certain at this point. All four of the top teams have lost the majority of their offense from a year ago, and all of the proven ???stars??? are gone. Returning is a nice mix of mainly young talent that are all eager to make a name for themselves. This season, it is very hard to find a team on paper that stands out from the other three. Each team has certain advantages and disadvantages, but there is no one team that appears to be significantly stronger than the other. Thus, I would be shocked to see anyone go undefeated in district play (in fact, their may be a logjam at the top with a whole mess of teams with 2 or 3 losses). So, below is a rundown of the teams, in alphabetical order (be prepared, it is very long).

Collinwood

??? Last Season ??“ 23??“7 (13??“1); District 12A Champions

??? Key Losses ??“ Abby Andrews, SF (14.8 ppg); Lesley Daniel, SG (17.3 ppg)

??? Key Returners ??“ Trista Rich, C (Sr.); Summer Thompson, F (Jr.); Allie Ward, PG (Jr.)

??? Breakdown - To say that it is strange to talk about the Trojanettes without discussing Abby Andrews and Lesley Daniel is a vast understatement. The loss of those four-year starters for Collinwood will definitely lead to some growing pains throughout the season. Not only will the loss of those two player??™s estimated combined 32 points per game hurt the Trojanettes, but everything that occurred on the offensive and defensive end started and ended with them. This season, the Trojanettes return three starters, with post player Trista Rich being the only player returning that averages double-digits from a year ago. Joining her will be fellow post player Summer Thompson and point guard Allie Ward who are both solid players at their positions. The question mark for Collinwood lies solely in the play of their wings as there does not appear to be any real scoring guards on this team. Look for most of the offense to go through Rich and Thompson in the post, while Ward will try to assume more of a scoring role from the outside. Another huge problem for Collinwood is their lack of depth as they really only go five deep. If any of their starting five get into foul trouble, especially Ward or Rich, then Collinwood will struggle significantly. Despite the huge loss of Andrews and Daniels, look for C-Wood to be in contention for this top spot due mainly to their returning three very capable starters.

??? Strengths ??“ Post Play, Rebounding, Experienced Point Guard

??? Weaknesses ??“ Depth, Scoring from Wing Positions, Outside Shooting, Speed

Frank Hughes

??? Last Season ??“ 8??“18 (5??“9)

??? Key Losses ??“ Haley Pevahouse, PG; Jessica Anderson, PF; Lynze Fraiser, SF

??? Key Returners - None

??? Breakdown ??“ The Lady Lions lose their three top scorers from last season in Pevahouse, Anderson, and Fraiser. Unfortunately for the Lady Lions, there is no one to replace them. The girls from Clifton had no depth last year and with those three graduating, I am not sure that they even have enough girls to have a bench consisting of more than one or two reserve players. It will be a very long year for the Lady Lions as the outlook is very bleak, and I would not be surprised if they did not win a game this year.

??? Strengths ??“ None

??? Weaknesses ??“ Depth, Guard Play, Post Play, Experience, Fundamentals, ect.

Hampshire

??? Last Season ??“ 8??“19 (5??“9)

??? Key Losses ??“ Sarah Boyd, SG (8.7 ppg)

??? Key Returners ??“ Kayla Lemire, PG (5.7 ppg); Lashara Booker, SF (5.4 ppg); Hannah Ledbetter, SG (5.4 ppg); Hannah Boyd, SF (4.3 ppg)

??? Breakdown ??“ The Lady Hawks, for the first time in a long time, pose a semi-serious threat to knocking out one of the perennial top four teams in District 12A. Hampshire, who graduated only two seniors, returns nearly 29 points per game of their offense, making them second among teams in the district in terms of returning offense. Leading the way for Hampshire will be the trio of guards in Kayla Lemire, Lashara Booker, and Hannah Ledbetter. However, Hampshire is still very small and has no real post presence, which will hurt them against most teams in the district who do have a tall, dominant post player. This season, with as much inexperience as there is on the top four teams, Hampshire may be able to exploit that at some point to give at least one team a real scare.

??? Strengths ??“ Experience, Guard Play

??? Weaknesses ??“ Post Play, Height, Coaching, Depth

Mt. Pleasant

??? Last Season ??“ 0??“27 (0??“14)

??? Key Losses ??“ Christin Cathey, C (9 ppg)

??? Key Returners - None

??? Breakdown ??“ The Lady Tigers are currently on the longest losing streak in Class A (I believe), as they have not won a game since November 26, 2005 (77 straight losses). To make matters worse, they lost the only player that had any idea of how to play the game of basketball in Cathey. On the bright side, they did appear to have a group of freshmen, led by Tiara Hughes, which showed some potential and could help lead the Lady Tigers to at least a win over possibly Clifton or Zion Christian this season.

??? Strengths ??“ Speed

??? Weaknesses ??“ Experience, Fundamentals, Coaching, Guard Play, Post Play, Depth, ect.

Perry County

??? Last Season ??“ 19??“11 (10??“4); District 12A 3rd Place

??? Key Losses ??“ Kazaray Dabbs, SF (17 ppg); Courtney Treadwell, SG (8.7 ppg); Becca Leegan, PG (8.3 ppg)

??? Key Returners ??“ Brooke Warren, PG (Jr.); Alycia Simmons, SG (So.)

??? Breakdown ??“ The Lady Vikings join Wayne County in that they lose four seniors from last season. Adding to the complications is that they will have to learn a new system under 1st year head coach Eric Lomax, who replaces David Lee at the helm. Returning for Perry County is 5??™8??? guard Brook Warren who may be the best overall player in 12A. Alongside her is 5??™6??? wing Alycia Simmons who was inserted into the starting line-up for the second-half of the season last year and is possibly the second best overall guard in the district behind Warren. Together, Warren and Simmons make-up the best scoring backcourt in all of 12A as Warren was the leading scoring sophomore and Simmons was the leading scoring freshman in 12A last season. Unfortunately for Perry County, their Achilles??™ Heels continue to be their post play, height, and depth. If Tucker or McCaig can become a consistent scoring threat inside to compliment the play of Perry County??™s guards outside and find at least two players who can give them significant minutes and production off the bench, then the Lady Vikings could find themselves competing for the top two spots in the district. If not, then they will find themselves in that third or fourth spot once again.

??? Strengths ??“ Guard Play, Outside Shooting, Transition Offense

??? Weaknesses ??“ Consistent Post Play, Rebounding, Depth

Summertown

??? Last Season ??“ 18??“13 (9??“5); District 12A 4th Place

??? Key Losses ??“ Haley Lovett, PG (15 ppg); Kayla Clark, SF (10 ppg)

??? Key Returners ??“ Paige Smith, C (Sr.); Sara Dickey, PF (Sr.); Adeanna Adams, SG (Sr.)

??? Breakdown ??“ The Lady Eagles lose two starters from last season, including four-year starter and floor general Haley Lovett as well as all-around purpose player Kayla Clark. However, they do have by far the best incoming freshman class in 12A, led by the 5??™5??? athletic guard/forward Courtney Grooms. Of all the teams in 12A, Summertown may be the most balanced of the group as they return a strong inside game led by 5??™10??? Paige Smith (returning leading scoring) and 5??™8??? Sara Dickey to compliment the solid outside play of Grooms, Adams, and Peterson. However, there are no real big scoring threats at the guard positions for Summertown. In fact, none of their returning guards averaged over 2.9 points per game last season, and when graduating seniors Lovett and Clark were not in the game, the Lady Eagles really struggled to score. Despite their lack of returning guard offense, one can always expect Summertown to bring the ???D,??? which will probably be the staple of their game all season long. If Smith can get some help on the outside from the younger guards, Summertown, could find themselves finishing as high as 2nd, if not even 1st, in the district.

??? Strengths ??“ Defense, Depth, Post Play

??? Weaknesses ??“ Size, No Proven Point Guard/Leader, Half-Court Offense

Wayne County

??? Last Season ??“ 31??“6 (12??“2), District 12A Runner-Up, Region 6A Champion, State Final Four

??? Key Losses ??“ Rachel Melson, SG (13.3 ppg); Julia Myers, PG (11.8 ppg); Tristan Daniel, SF (11.3 ppg); Kristen Potete, C (8 ppg)

??? Key Returners ??“ Jessica Hammonds, PF (Sr.); Carly Daniel, C (So.)

??? Breakdown ??“ The Lady Cats lost more than any other team in District 12A as they lost four key starters and retain really only three players with any type of varsity playing experience. In fact, Waynesboro??™s offense only returns 16.5 points per game, which is the least of any of the perennial top four teams in 12A. Despite their key losses, Wayne County is still the tallest team in the district as they return a strong post duo in 6??™1??? sophomore Carly Daniel and 5??™9??? senior Jessica Hammonds. Look for everything that the Lady Cats do on the offensive end to run through the post. Unfortunately for Coach Byrd, he must first get the ball down the floor, which can potentially be a huge problem as he has one of the slowest, and least experienced backcourts in 12A. This alone does not bode well for the Lady Cats as the other three strong teams in 12A have decent speed at the guard spots and will press full-court most of the game. Outside shooting is also down from last season as senior guard Butler is the only consistent outside shooter, but because she is not good at creating her shot, her production is expected to be minimal. If teams pressure them full court and keep Hammonds and Daniel off of the offensive glass, Wayne County will struggle to score and may find themselves struggling to stay out of fourth place in 12A.

??? Strengths ??“ Post Play, Rebounding, Coaching

??? Weaknesses ??“ Guard Play, Speed, Depth, Experience

Zion Christian

??? Last Season ??“ 4??“18 (2??“12)

??? Key Losses ??“ Mary Heard, PG

??? Key Returners ??“ Madeline Cass, C (Jr.)

??? Breakdown ??“ After graduating four seniors from last season, the Lady Eagles were left with only three returning players. While one suspects that they have found enough girls to form a team, they, like Clifton, are not expected to win many games. The one bright spot is that they have Cass in the post, who has good size (6??™) and is capable if they can get the ball to her. Zion should battle Clifton and Mt. Pleasant for the final three spots in District 12A.

??? Strengths - Size in Post

??? Weaknesses ??“ Depth, Coaching, Guard Play, Post Play, Experience, Fundamentals, ect.

Top Returning Scorers (PPG) in 12A

1. Trista Rich (Sr.), Collinwood ??“ 12.3

2. Brooke Warren (Jr.), Perry County ??“ 11.8

3. Paige Smith (Sr.), Summertown ??“ 11.1

4. Jessica Hammonds (Sr.), Wayne County ??“ 7.2

5. Alycia Simmons (So.), Perry County ??“ 6.1

5. Summer Thompson (Jr.), Collinwood ??“ 6.1

Ptguard12 as always you provide the most accurate and detailed analyst. Wayne Co. will also be starting a freshman in Kelsey Risner. By years end I believe she will provide some added scoring along with her sister Jordan. Both are talented they just need some experience. Samantha Bell, 5-11 sophomore, has also improved alot and should add some bench depth. Should make for an interesting year. Keep us updated as always.

Perry County may be better than we think. If the post players step up. The team will play hard and play as a team or they will find themself on the bench with Coach Lomax.

All I have to say is WOW ptguard12. that was on the money. Can't wait til your annual top 10 for class A.

I believe this district will come down to Collinwood and Perry county. Collinwood lost alot of star power but they still have a lot of talent returning on that starting five. I think ball movement will be better this year than last, which could make us more of a balanced scoring team. Collinwood has a great, proven point guard in ward, though she does not look to score very often. Our depth is a problem, but really we have never been all that deep in the past, so i don't thik that will be a problem. The starting five is very tough, physical, and has some speed, so they will be alright. Perry county does, in my opinion as well, have the two best guards when it comes to putting the ball in the basket. I remember watching them play summertown in the 12a consolation game last year and it was those two players that ptguard12 mentioned that were making the big plays down the stretch. If they have improved beyond where they were last year then watch out cause they have a leg up on everyone else in the district as far as guard play. Perry county was the only team to beat Collinwood last year and I really believe they may be our biggest hurdle this season. Definitely not counting out Summertown and Wayne county as they will be tough as well. Summertown has more depth than everyone else but they had a hard time scoring when their two seniors were not in the game last year. As for Waynesboro, if memory serves me right, this group of girls never beat this group from Colliwnood when they were in middle school, I don't even think it was close, so they should not be too much of a problem. Their post play, and coaching of course, will be good as always, they are always a leg up on the district in those two areas.
