Question? Seniority vs Talent

If you have a senoir and a soph, equally talented, you would consider starting the soph. If the soph, has a bad night, as all players will, a senior should be able to calm things. If a senior has a bad night, does a soph in most cases come in during a tough situation and become a calming force among his/her peers, doubtful.

I am being serious now> If a senior can't cut it, and freshman can, play the freshman. But it all depends on who is making the judgement. A parent? they are biased, and probably think their kid is better and that is ok, I am a parent too. But it is the coach's decision, and in most cases they are going to put out there who they TRUST! It may not be the most talented. I think the upperclass people get first look. In the case of Mt. Juliet, as mentioned, he will run off a whole class, if the incoming class is better, but he wins so it is hard to argue against what he does. I am sure he makes mistakes sometimes on assessing talent, but he gets it right most of the time, and it does not hurt to have Aleshia Clark fall into your lap once in a while. When parents ask this question though, I get very skeptical. /roflolk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflolk:" border="0" alt="roflolk.gif" />

Interesting topic. One thing that has not been discussed is team chemistry. Upperclassmen can take offense to having teammates lose playing time to freshmen. Upperclassmen may take some serious ribbing from their peers not on the team. This is a delicate balance a coach must manage. The coaches are still dealing with teenagers, who emotions can change in a heartbeat. Coaches need to understand the maturity of their upperclassmen, and the upperclassmen's abiltiy to accept the freshmen. In the end talent should win out, and the upperclassmen know the score having endured hours of practice that only the coaches and players see. It is the upperclassmen's responsibility to lead, not feel deserving of play time because of seniority.

Well you think Lebron james's coach said he's just a freshman, sophmore, etc If you are a coach you don't have 4 years to make your mark like players do. You play the best team you can put on the floor. if you have 5 seniors coming back and 6 freshmen that beat them at camp etc. Seems the Seniors shoulda worked harder as freshmen tough luck. Play the best 5 you can put on the floor.

Unfortunatly most coaches are PE major or the rare few are really teachers. they are not Psychiatrists or otherwise they are coaches the biggest problem in high school sports is parents..
