Union City Vs. Lake County

Okay so for those of you that seen the game.....has UC improved since earlier this season or was LC off.??

Only heard the very end of this game on my home back from the Obion Central debacle at Westview but heard it was 73-70 Lake County in OT....

 

I do know that UC outscored the Falcons 27-12 in the third qtr to enter the 4th qtr up by 6.....UC had a chance to win the game in regulation but Ryne Simpson hit on only two of the three free throws he attempted with about 3 seconds left....

 

UC was down one with the ball with about 40 secs left in OT but took what Sisco said on his postgame show an "ill-advised" shot....UC also had the ball after LC hit two free throws down three with a chance to tie but also missed that shot....

 

UC shot 12 for 25 or 27 from the free throw line..That will not win you many close games...

 

Sisco said he thought his kids competed for the full 36 minutes and that is all he could ask from his team...He said that a few of them played through cramps and was pleased with their overall effort....He said this should prove to his team that if they work hard for four qtrs they can play with anyone in the district....

 

 

 

I'm pretty sure I heard that Carlos Young had either 22 or 24 for the Falcons....

 

We're not into moral victories around here but this game has to be a big step forward in the progression of this team...

Union City sure shot enough of them...Union City was holding Rafael and Carlos to keep them from driving with no calls..Rafael got his nose busted on one play and had to leave the game for about 4 minutes with no call...If Lake Co shot 15 free throws..I bet they missed 10 of them..And Avery being taken out of the game by a couple touch fouls..At least at Humboldt ..the officials let them play..If Union City can't win at home with 3 baskets taken off the board by charging calls..Avery just playing for a half..Union City shooting about 80 percent in the 3rd quarter..That was their best chance..Lake co is at least 10 to 15 points better ....8 nights out of ten this year..Sisco cried tonight and made about 3 calls in front of the Union City bench.He pointed one time..like a first down in football..that it was Union City's ball and it was obvious..Coach Whitby questioned the call but Sisco had already made the call.!Worst officiated game I've seen in any game this year !But the guard and Simpson and Marshall did play very well..Simpson is smart..Takes charges and sometimes flops and still gets the calls

I don't know if they've improved..But they did shoot really well in the 3rd quarter..Not sure if that was a one game shooting performance or not..As for Lake Co being off..Union City dictated the way the game was played..Slowed it down..Had all the calls..Not hard to be off when Russel Avery fouled out and only played a half and he was blocking shots..Patrick Robertson played with 4 foulls as well as Rafael for all the 4th quarter.!

Taking those charges are a sign of good coaching.....Also it shows that a player isn't afraid of contact....Whitby used to be a master at it at OC....He had kids at OC that people kept stats on for taking charges....As far as officiating, any game can't compare to the garbage that happened at Lake County last season....That was the only game in my time on CoachT that has ever prompted me to really get on a set of three "officials"....I used to cry about officials all the time back in the day...I came to the realization that none of them are very good and you aren't going to get many calls when you hit the road.....I also came to the realization that officials don't win or lose games....Many things happen during the game that have more impact on the final score...Good teams overcome the refs....LC overcame the calls, so there ya go...

 

You must not have seen Whitby back when he was healthy....He cried and whined as well as any coach on the planet..He would get the refs to call anything...Again, that's a sign of gamesmanship and a sign of a smart coach....

 

The fact is, and you may not like it is this.....Lake County is probably 12-15 points better than this Union City team this season...LC only won by three in OT and could have very easily gotten beat...You mentioned earlier that LC started messing around when they built their lead on UC...That's nothing more than a lack of discipline....Championship caliber teams don't do that...You won't see Union City do that...If a UC player loses his mind and does showboat he will find himself sitting right beside Sisco before Shane's foot hits the floor when he does one of those famous foot stomps....

 

Just remember, UC will more than likely be one of the four teams in that loser-go-home regional semi-final round...They may lose when they go to Humboldt and Lake County later on in the regular season(I have them going 14-4 in the district)but right now the Sisco's are looking for improvement....They are trying to get the team ready for the tournaments....I wouldn't want to be that team opposite the Tornadoes in the region semi-final.....

 

On a different subject....

 

Did you hear about the fight that broke out at Fulton City last night??...It happened right after the game started..Two players were going for a rebound and got tangled up and started fighting...A woman came out of the stands and hit one of the Fulton City players on the jaw...That prompted a group of about 50 fans to come out on the floor and start fighting...I guess every cop in Fulton and Fulton County had to be called in to stop the riot....People got arrested....Police had to escort the Fulton County bus back to their school...A mess, for sure.....

I heard Sisco say on the radio that Union City played hard ..That they did..Said that they should have won..Really this game should never have gone to overtime but since it did because of stupid plays by Lake Co..then yes..maybe they should have..Lake Co started off and had about a 15 point lead..Then just like always..Lake Co thinks they are circus performers..trying to shoot triple pumps and I'm just waiting to see if someone shoots it through their legs..Very poor shot selection..Lake Co led by 9 points at the half and Russell Avery had two fouls..Lake Co had about 3 baskets wiped off after they scored because of charging calls..Someone from Lake Co has to realize that Simpson is going to take a charge..Stop and pass the ball off for a layup or shoot a little two footer..But give Union City credit..at the start of the 3rd quarter Union City came down and hit about 5 shots in a row..Russel Avery picked up his third foul on a charge that probably shouldn't have been called..He saw Simpson..went around ,although they did brush each other and Avery was called for the charge..Union City came down the floor and Avery was called for his 4th foul..Union City hit about 3 more shots and took the lead ,I believe 42-36 and Avery went to the bench with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter with his fourth foul..Union City was on fire..Seemed like they hit about 9 of their first 10 shots..And several was from deep..Lake Co kept battling and came back and tied and took the lead..Lake Co played the last 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter with Avery on the bench..Simpson went down in the 3rd quarter..Looked like he may have hurt his knee..I believe he came back later in the 3rd quarter and came out again for some of the 4th quarter..Anyway..Lake Co had a 1 point lead with about 6 minutes to go in the game..Coach Whitby put Avery back in..The first trip down the floor,about 10 seconds later..Simpson faked a shot..drove to the basket and Avery was called for his 5th foul...Six minutes left and Avery was on the bench after fouling out..Everyone thought Union City had Lake co on the ropes..Avery had only played a half..Only played about 2 minutes in the 3rd quarter...Lake Co fought hard and this is where it got interesting and I'm not sure if Lake Co has the floor leader to win a big game..or a state tournament game..Lake Co had a 6 point lead with about 1:10 seconds left to play..Lake Co had the ball..Calius Hockett shot a long shot from outside..How dumb is that..To even shoot a shot with a 6 point lead and the ball..Union City comes down and scores and Lake Co is fouled but missed their free throws..Missed about 4 in the last minute..Anyway..Lake Co had a 5 point lead with maybe 20 seconds left to play..Missed a free throw and Union City hit a long 3...Lake Co is inbounding the ball..Just get it in bounds..Instead of just throwing it in..threw it to a player at half court and Union City intercepted the ball and scored to tie it up..Lake Co gets the ball ..is fouled..makes the free throws and has a 2 point lead with about 8 seconds left..Union City throws the ball to Simpson and he shoots a 3 and Dominic Kimble comes from nowhere to block the shot but made body contact and Simpson was shooting 3 free throws with only 3 seconds left..If he makes them all..Union City wins..He made the first..missed the 2nd...made the 3rd and it was over time..The lead changed hands hands several times..Lake Co had a 4 point lead and Marshall hit a long three...Lake Co finally got a 5 point lead with 5 seconds left and Marshall shot a long three that was an airball but Lake co had all their players out close to half court and when his shot was short..fell into a Union City players hand and he scored a layup with 1 second left to make the final score 73-70..B.J. Marshall and Ryne Simpson both played well for Union City..Marshall hit some long three's ..Now..My take on the game..Union City got every call imaginable..but that's part of the game sometimes..Players have to adjust..They have to realize that Simpson wa staking charges..Lake Co has been making free throws ..Tonight they didn't and it like to have cost them..It seems like whenever Lake Co gets a double digit lead on teams..They all want to make super star individual plays..And last..Lake Co has got to realize that when their are only seconds left or a minute left and a 6 point lead and they have the ball..Don't shoot unless it's a lay up..I'm not sure Lake Co has the intellegience to or patience it's going to take to go very far in the tournament..Not that the players aren't smart..Just that they are too trigger happy...Need a good point guard like C.J. Crittondon to take charge and control the game and the players....But..Lake Co hung in..won on the road in a terribe officiated game..The worst I've seen this year in any game..But still got a win with Russell Avery only playing a half!

 

Uh bigster, kids are going to be kids. Someone has to rein them in and get them to play smart. If they are making stupid plays and take shots with a 6 point lead that late in the game they should be sitting on the bench. Who ultimately has the responsibility to see that players understand clock management and when not to throw up shots? You say the point guard, well what if he is not in position to get the ball, I say every player should have that essential fact pounded into their brain until it is second nature. I say again who is ultimately responsible for seeing that players understand that. We both know the answer to that question..............

You are pretty basketball savvy Purple, who would you say is mainly responsible for teaching discipline on a basketball team, the point guard or the coach.

Yea it is true Whitby is one of the best coaches around......but i wonder how long he'll continue to coach.

True, but long do u think TB will coach at HBT? I heard he was thinking about hanging them up. If so who do u think will replace him!

There are many basketball savvy people on coacht, that are much more knowledgeable than I could ever be. My work doesn't allow me to attend all of the Lake County games much less games from other schools around the area. I don't know x's and o's or always know what basketball player has the greater talent because I don't see enough games to make legitimate comparisons. I think I know talent just not who is the best. I do have common sense.

Don't underestimate common sense. I would pose this question to all of you who may be interested in the game of basketball..........who would you say is mainly responsible for teaching discipline on a basketball team, the point guard or the coach.
