Speaking as a coach who allowed a first time girls squad in my program with a little skepticism. I was pleased with what I found:

The girls came more motivated

The girls worked as hard (harder than most)

The girls were dedicated

the girls deserved the opportunity

It is amazing to me to hear all the negative comments? I allowed a girl squad because I tell my own children that there is nothing that they cannot do as long as they are willing to work for it. If the girls are willing to work for it then they deserve the opportunity. Yes, they are not boys and I do not try to compare them. We talk about what this country is becoming? Where would our country be if everyone quit just because somebody said they couldn't or shouldn't do something.

If the girl is worried about her weight being known that is just self-esteem issues. Sounds like a guy complaining about the singlet or wrestlers being homo-sexual. This is something they immediately get over once they try the sport. I will gladly let my daughter wrestle and hope she wants to. She is only 18 months old and I know she would give other girls heck. I can't wait to see if this is a sport she will enjoy.

I was, and still am, opposed to girls wrestling guys. One, it is counter to my concept of chivalry. Second, it will take away from schools any impetus to have girl's events or larger girl's squads. Third, it grants an unfair advantage to the girls who do wrestle against guys. I will always be opposed to girls wrestling guys.

Jon Renner and I initially threw in with Steve Henry on this for two reasons. First, we wanted to see what we could do if we started from square one in girl's wrestling. At Science Hill our constant uphill battle on the guy's side of the sport is that we are still decades behind the Bradleys and Soddys and Clevelands and Clarksvilles. I'm proud that we have been able to establish a certain level of competitiveness and to maintain it over several years, but we'll always be playing catchup with those guys. Beginning with the girls from day one would let us answer a sort of "what if?" question.

We also got on board because we wanted to get girls out of guy's wrestling. And that will happen eventually, regardless of one self interested administrator's desire to keep that from happening so that he can provide the above mentioned unfair advantage to his one wrestler.

But what I have realized over time is that the best reason for girl's wrestling is this.

How many of us who post on here would agree that wrestling is one of the best things that ever happened to us? Dan Gable is not cliched when he says that after wrestling, everything is easy. I spent ten years in the Army, and only twice was I ever at my physical limit, never at my mental limit. That was all due to the stubborn tenacity I learned from our sport. It has served me on countless occasions. I am happy that I can share these lessons with girls as well as guys.

And I'll tell you this-Janie Goldstein has been one of the most dedicated kids I have ever seen. She has worked hard on her personal fitness and her wrestling development since last year. It was fun to watch her pin her way through the tournament.

Girls should be able to reap the benefits of this sport as well as guys. My coaching career has been enriched as a result of my experience with this.

I'd like to add some perspective with girls wrestling. I think it's a wonderful idea. I have a little 9 yr old girl friend from the east TN area who's spent the last year of her life, fighting for her life against leukemia. She has become very special to me. She has a scrap book of photos of my boys she's taken off the internet from the beginning of the season up through my son's medal ceremony at state. She hasn't been able to watch them because of her illness but she sure keeps up with it on the internet. When I told her the state had their first ever state girls wrestling tournament I can't adequately express her excitement. All she talks about is getting to wrestle at state next year with my other boys. It's goals like state that are helping her to fight the leukemia. As for posting the weight issue, I'll just say this......who cares!!!! I've watched her go from my little pudgy baby, to skin and bones from her chemo treatments. Can't tell you how excited a day it was when she returned from the Dr. and had gained 8 lbs. I'm looking forward to the day to hear the word remission and am looking forward to the day she is wrestling with my boys and best of all.......Wrestling in the State Girls tournament. What a blessing that would/will be!!!!

No, a trillion dollar spending package is what's wrong with the country. High school girl wrestling is just silly.

I have to agree here.

If it is going to happen, this is the correct way to do it. Girl on girl action. Not boy on girl action.

I have zero desire to ever watch a girl on girl match. It just holds not interest to me about who the best girl wrestler might be. It falls into the circus side show category. In other words, there is a place for it and many will want to "see it", but it is not the sport that I know.

Even saying this girl pinned her way to the championship .....does that really mean a lot in regards to skill today? I doubt it. I am sure it means a lot to the girl and congratulations to her, she is the best of the girls this year.

Now if the main motivation is to get the girls out of the guys sport as the coach from SH says, then if this is the manner in which that had to happen, fine. It was a problem and they found a solution. I just wonder if schools will treat it as it's own team and sport. Hire separate coaches (like girls basketball) and practice separate, etc. Or are the coaches expected to take on a whole other team for the same money they currently get for coaching the varsity boys, the JV and staying engaged in the kids club?

What is wrong with America is that everybody wants to be able to belong in every organization, no matter it it makes sense or not. It does not make sense in this case, to me. BUT, at least they are moving towards having their own team and that I could support versus the alternative.

Wrestlersdad.......I passed your post around here and you need to tell her she's got a whole bunch of new friends down here at Collins Hill pulling for her to wrestle too.

She can look us up on: www.collinshillwrestling.com

We'd like to send her a shirt to let her know we're thinking about her if you could tell me where to send that to.

ContryPK, thanks for your response too. She's not my daughter, but a little girl I've grown to love very much watching her battle her illness.

Thank you all!!

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
