I guess the reason I asked is because if the ump says he called time "before the second pitch" - on the third pitch; then officially only 1 pitch had been thrown.

 

How could the count be 1-1 with only one pitch being thrown? /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blink:" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

1st pitch counts, after the 3rd pitch ump says 2nd pitch voided ,because he called time before that pitch(2nd) was thrown. Yet 3rd pitched counted. heck, I'm confused now, and I was there. LOL /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs

Double steal , batter takes the pitch, never moves (take sign from coach)

Catcher tries to throw to 3rd and hits the batter (who has never moved, feet in box, bat on shoulder)

Umpire makes no call, defensive coach objects strenuously

Umpire calls the batter out, says the batter must make an attempt to get out of the catchers way.

 

Batter is also a catcher, a good catcher steps back to make the throw to third, so if the batter steps "back" he is obstructing the throw. He has been taught to make that play at second, so if he steps "up" he is obstructing the throw to second.

 

So, based on blues call, the best way to get the runner at third is to hit the batter !

If the batter truly failed to move, then the ump was wrong. Under the rules of baseball an offensive player interfers if he commits an act that impedes the defensive player. A swing can therefore be considered interference if the ump deems it done for the purpose of impeding the catcher so the coaches who teach that better be careful. If the batter truly did not move, the ump simply misapplied the rule as I read and interpret it. It's in section 2 of the Rules of Baseball.

If I have a High School game Monday a NCAA Division two game on Tuesday, A NAIA game om Thursday and Division 1 Confrence games on the weekend which was my schedule last week guess which one I heard the most griping and complaining and pure old whining in? That is right the High School game where the stands are full of the hobby coaches, that are summertime Joe Torres, that think they are Gods gift to the game. The actual High School coaches are tickled for competent umpires to be there and they know that they can relax and coach that day but the verbiage coming from the stands is hysterical. So veteran umps tend to stick strictly to a College schedule, and the good young umpires, especially in Metro areas will do the little kid travel ball stuff where the cash is flowing and it is worth their while to put up with the abuse. If you constantly abuse the new umpires the will never become experienced enough to get better. I have done this for over 30 years and I don't think I have ever seen a High School game where an umpire intentionally missed a call to cost someone a game. It is the only job in the world where perfection is expected on day one and improvement is demanded after that. Listen to yourselves sometime, in Football and Basketball there is usually a dressing room to shield officials from the fans. in Baseball it is usually a parking lot where abuse is rampant and I pity the poor official that takes up for himself out there. Umpires are needed you are right but if you want to make the initial $300 investment to become one contact your local assigner and join up with a great group of guys who love a great game, if your not willing to do what it takes then keep paying to yell at us but just know how ignorant of the game that many of you are, and dont even try to become anymore knowledgeable.

I thought I had seen some terrible umpires until last night...Catholic vs Stone Memorial. The umpire was calling balls and strikes before the balls even got to the plate...Reversed 3 calls because he was jumped on by the Catholic fans/coaches...The best one yet..ball hit down first base line, first basemen hits ball with his glove, ball bounces into fair territory, umpire holds his right hand out as if he was calling foul ball...NEVER NEVER NEVER says a word, players clearing bases, batter gets on third. Everybody is in an uproar because he held his hand out motioning it was foul. Every umpire I have every heard makes it clear by yelling if its a foul ball instead of letting everybody run. I have never been so upset...of course batter is winded from running his behind off gets back up to bat and strikes out. It was a really good game but when you have calls like that and they have such an impact on the game its a shame, especially when its kids and its a district game to beat all....

I wonder if the umps in the west part of the state are better than in the east as a group for some reason (experience, background)?? I honestly can't say the ones we've had this year are "bad." There have been some interesting strike zones but as long as they're consistent . . . you really have no gripe. Couple we had in tourney in shelby county were quite good in that they made their calls loud enough that every know-it-all in the stands heard what they're were saying like "batter's out, ball hit him after he left the box." That puts an end to SOME of the "whining" as bbump referred to it.
