Wow, Karns gets beat by one again, the kids played thier butts off tonight and come up short. I know all us Karns faithful will say we played great and got beat on a last sec play which is true but when are we going to really say it like it is our coaches just can't win the close one and I not saying it wihout proof look at the last two years been in some games and find ourselves on the short end, lets all get excited about the close games we lose and continue supporting a coaching staff that just can't get it done under pressure. We are 0-2 with loses against teams that are in rebulding years what is going to happen when we have to play the teams that are not in the rebuilding faze. lets toot our horns on the close ones and keep that same direction of short comings when the kids deserve better.

What a game... Shame that someone had to lose.............

First I want to say to the Karns faithful.. Your team played great... Your Coaches coached great.. They came in with their game plan and it worked.... Don't get down on the coaches or players... Coach Reeves is a good coach and a good man.. I respected him when he was here and I still respect him now..

Your players played hard from start to finish.. Keep the faith... Things have a way of evening out....

The Govs endured several losses last year in the same manner... We had several breaks in this game go our way.. If we hadn't things could have turned out different.. Both teams played well enough to win.. Both teams made enough mistakes to lose... This time we came out on top... We were due to win one of these.. We lost a bunch of these last year... Good luck the rest of the way....

Thanks Poole for your kind words. Even though it was yet another loss, it was probably the most exciting game I've ever seen Karns play. I had a young (11 yr old) football player ride home with me after the game and I told him I thought there were at least two things he could learn from the game:

1) Don't ever lay down and quit. After giving up those two 3rd qtr scores Karns could have easily thrown in the towel. But they didn't. They fought back like I've never seen them do before. Then they forced the fumble and mounted an impressive drive right down the field to take the lead.

2) As Yogi Berra once profoundly noted - It aint over til it's over. In a close game (or even a semi-close game) you just can't ever let up until the clock runs out.

Mr Jammin:

I'm not certain what your agenda is but if you're actually a supporter of the team I don't see CoachT as the right place to openly criticize the team. I've seen the Karns coaches make what I thought were a number of mistakes over the past years. And I've seen Karns lose a number of close games in the 4th qtr due to poor conditioning and/or lack of focus (See 2 above). But I don't think last night's loss was because of coaching errors or lack of effort. I thought the offensive game plan was excellent and was executed well. The defense was fairly porous against the run but look at how Alcoa chewed up Maryville. Let's face it, the Govs had some real running talent. As far as the timeout called by Karns at the end before the last conversion, I don't really see it as a coaching error. I admire the Gov guys for appealing to their coach to go for two. As far as the Hail Mary, the Karns Coach calmly reminded his players after the game, "we teach you to knock the ball down immediately in those types of end of game passing situations". It's your God-given right to criticize the coaches or the program any time you want to. But at this point in time I ask you to consider what's best for the kids. I don't see this team as yet another group of Karns losers - and even if I did I wouldn't say it here. In fact I think they'll rise up, overcome this latest disappointment, and show some people what they're made of despite the step up in the competition level in region play that's about to occur. It's pretty obvious that you have issues with the coaching staff. If so, why don't you express them to the athletic director and/or Principal Davis, or even go talk to our school board representative. I believe coaching positions at schools are typically reviewed after the season. After the public embarrassment Karns suffered under the former head coach and the lesser tumult recently caused by the former freshman coach, I honestly don't see any value in starting a public debate about the current coaching staff. Please think about it before posting any more such blatantly negative comments. Thank you for listening.

Excellent Post!!!

I wanted to say something about that post but didn't think it was my place....

As I stated earlier... Coach Reeves is a good coach and a good man... The players played hard and never quit... That shows the character of both the players and staff....

Good Luck Karns

I agree, I have nothing but respect for coach Reeves. He taught me the ins and outs of American Government while he was at WB. Everyone that was on the team while Reeves was here spoke very highly of him as a coach. As for Karns and last night, I thought they executed their offense to perfection. I am not real sure why they ever ran the ball - we could not stop the pass. I think that the Karns QB is outstanding, he made some wonderful passes. Good luck to the Beavers for the remainder of the season. Any word on the player that got hurt?

Does anyone know the schedule for replaying the game on BCS-TV? I would love to watch it again.

Agenda, is this big tuna and any other one that wants to know we have the been the whipping post for many schools over the years and year after year we continue that tradition its not just the coaching staff its the things in general that we the Karns community seem to accept I agree the boys played as about as good as they could have to come up short and we will accept that as a good thing and go and continue doing the same things, I don't have an agenda but, I will say I agree with the majority of the people setting in the stands its time to find a coaching staff that can turn this program into something rather than a losing team year in an year out so when you ask my agenda its real simple, I will post the things that I see and the things I believe and just as you guys can post how great things are and your support for whoever maybe coaching the beavs I can dis agree and post about what ever I wish. I assure you that I want Karns to win more than anything and if this staff could do it I would be the first to say great job but it has been two years aoing on three now and we are 3 and 18 with games looking allot the same week in week out, so my question to you is what are you willing to accept much of the same or change.

Interesting discussion. This is just an opinion but I see two issues here:

1) What will be best for the program from here to season end?

2) What will be best for the program after this season ends?

Re: nbr 1 - I can't see how it will help the program and especially the kids (who in my mind should be the highest priority) to start beating the coach bashing drum again at this point. If someone feels differently could you please explain?

Re: nbr 2 - Is it still too early to tell? What if Karns wins 5? What if they make the playoffs? Even if a coaching change looks like a viable option, will this decision be made based on CoachT posts and/or "popular opinion"? Do you remember seeing many of the Karns faithful on TV and in the papers blasting Dr Davis and singing the praises of former Coach Fulkerson? Who ended up leaving and who remains today? What message did that public display send to the rest of East Tennesseans as they watched the soap opera day after day - most probably that Karns is filled with a bunch of ignorant rednecks who don't know their behind from a hole in the ground. So ranting on CoachT is certainly an option, but is it really what the community, the school, and the football program needs? I suggest you bide your time, see what the rest of the season brings, then make your points to the people who make the decisions if/when you still think they need to be made.

The loss Friday was anything but a coaching loss. Bad luck. I was once taught a great lesson in the coaching arena:

Winning and Losing are imposters...in other words, for 59 minutes and 42 seconds it was a well-played game for both schools (minus some poor defense). Okay...the Governors caught a 60 yard Hail Mary and got a 2 pt conversion for the win. Now, in my opinion, had the normal play occurred, Karns would have won and all of the talk from the Karns faithful would be what a great comeback they made and all of the WB faithful would have been talking about their defensive issues. So how does 1 miraculous play change the other 99.99% of the game. Tell it like it is...both teams moved the ball with ease against the other's defense. Blount just got the break late...and we're still minus on the break board for the last 3 years.

Karns has a fine team and so does WB.

seems that a few of you want to voice your opion bout how great of a coaching staff we have at karns, so i want to voice mine. I played 4 years at karns 2 with the reeves program and i can tell you from a players experince it was terible last year before our homecoming game the great head coach allowed his dc to tell us we were the worst f---in players in the state of tennessee and that is fact. you people that want to talk bout how great this staff is you dont know cause your not on the sidelines or at practice. there is allot of rumors that float around but this staff is TERRIBLE. would love to see us get a new staff that cares about the kids and not thier so called success at other schools heard that at least 100 times, and ya coach newberry is one of the worst. the seniors from last year will be posying more input get some balls davis and get a coach.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
