"Just making sure you guys were awake and aware of us Middle Tennesseans. LOL

Yes, we are aware of Sheila Frost, Marcus Haislip, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and the KKK, among other tidbits of Giles County history. Over here in the hills, we have plenty of time to think while we're sittin' on the porch pettin' Old Blue, whittlin' and chewing tobaccy.

Other than those snippits of unsightly American history Alcoa has made the trip to Middle Tennessee five straight years and returned with gold, so yes we are very aware. :D

MLREB it was a good post, however you did lose credibility with the 40% tuition players post. :thumb:

Like I said earlier 72....prove me wrong.

MLREB since you made the ridiculous claim the burden of proof falls on you buddy, but I do recall making a statement in an earlier post (different thread) that I don't have to rely on an ex-Alcoa teacher who happens to be a Maryville fan for information about the Tornadoes. I have plenty of family in and around the program for that and since that is the case, the percentage of tuition students is nowhere close to 40%. Now you prove me wrong Mr. ex

The percentage of tuition students at Alcoa last year was 31%. The percentage of tuition students playing on the football team is 40% + or - 3%. No 72...it is not ridiculous.

[i know that I have been away for awhile, but is Richie Kreme anything like Krispie Kreme?

Richy Kreme has been the place to go for three generations of overweight Blount Countians. It is located in Eagleton Village right across Broadway from the Eagleton Little League complex and as far as I know, has been in that location since it opened in 1948. See http://www.yelp.com/biz/richy-kreme-donuts-maryville. People who have eaten Richy Kreme and Krispy Kreme brands swear by Richy Kreme.

According to Wikipedia, the first shop using the name Krispy Kreme was opened on Charlotte Pike in Nashville in 1933. Its recipes had been bought from Joseph LeBeouf, a Lake Charles, Louisiana gentleman who later ran a doughnut shop in Paducah, Kentucky.

So, the Krispy Kreme name preceded Richy Kreme by at least 15 years. I would assume Krispy Kreme has never sued Richy Kreme for use of a similar name. Richy Kreme also used to have an attached drive-in restaurant, where they served the usual hamburgers, etc. I remember their Shrimp Basket, which included fried shrimp, french fries, a large soft drink, and a doughnut for one low price.

Very interesting tidbits Chauncey thanks for the info 8-) I just remember as a kid traveling with my family how everybody would zero in on Krispy Kreme especially when the fresh doughnuts sign was on.

I believe after watching the game that 1. Alcoa is a heckuva ball team with size, and awesome speed, and 2. Loudon is better than alot of folks give them credit for. It was a battle up front for 4 quarters, and the secondary was in position and made break ups when they needed to. This was a great ballgame, and could've been 14-7, or maybe even 21-14.

My hat is off to Alcoa, as well as to the Redskins. Both teams deserve respect after last nights battle.

Good luck to both teams.

Thanks, so it was an epic battle of the top 2 teams in the classification. :thumb:

I guess this question was answered last night.....

Alcoa is a lot better than what it showed last night. The line looked slower and didnt really have a lot of enthusiasm. That will deffinatly improve. The defense looked very strong in the shutout. Honestly think that maybe Alcoa overlooked the redskins, that wont happen again this year. The F5 will play a lot better in upcoming weeks.

Not necessarily. Beware of putting too much stock in one game out of a potentially 15 game season. Remember the 2006 Maryville team many thought to be the best in any classification after the state playoffs. Its first playoff game with Brainerd ended 30-26. Brainerd was 4-6 going in to the game and had lost 77-8 to Red Bank earlier in the season. That game would have been meaningful if Brainerd had been able to pull it out and eliminate Maryville from the playoffs, but otherwise, it is pretty much meaningless.

One game does not define the whole season. We'll have to wait until the playoffs are over to make an educated guess about the relative strengths of the teams in the various classifications. That said, lest you think I'm a wild eyed apologist for this year's Alcoa team, see this excerpt from one of my earlier posts.

There are teams in Tennessee that can beat Alcoa. They may be in D.II, but they are still capable of beating Alcoa. MUS, MBA, Ensworth, Brentwood Acad. (maybe).... I understand that those schools are much bigger, but I still don't think Alcoa is THE best team in the state. They are definately in the top 3-5 for sure!

I suspect you are right, but again, we'll never know for sure who would win if these teams actually played each other. Plus, Division II teams are not the only teams to consider. You have to include all the potentially outstanding Division I 6A teams in the midstate. Several different schools from the Nashville Metro/Murfreesboro/Smyrna area have won 5A championships in the past 15 years. Those schools plus some others which have not yet won a championship are capable of having a powerhouse in a given year. Quite a few of these teams are capable of beating Alcoa in a head-to-head matchup. The large school powerhouses generally have superior talent and size in their offensive and defensive lines and lots of depth. These are the characteristics of teams that have given Alcoa trouble in the past. It is my opinion that Maryville's superiority over Alcoa in line play and depth has been the most important factor in their domination of the rivalry since 1970.

Are any of you watching the Farragut vs Catholic game? I'm not saying that Alcoa would lose to either team, but, I wouldn't give them a certain win either. Both would be a good game.

Funny how MREB tells us that Maryville can play with the big boys, yet when it finally happens, Maryville is going into 2 down years, and will not compete for state titles. Welcome to the real world!

HUH? If you don't think Maryville Is down this year you haven't been watching . This probably Is Coach Quarles's weakest team right now , but they won't be for long . We'll get to see how your team ( Oak Ridge ) does against our weakest team In a decade later this year ......

i should have known Pep would be the one trying to set me straight-LOL .Read this real slow Pep maybe you'll understand it and get your facts straight for your response post, My team?, no my son plays for the Bobcats, not the wildcats, and the reference to MREB and Maryville was done tongue in cheek, ALL teams go through cycles, even Maryville, is it REALLY any wonder that you spend most of your time on CoachT defending yourself and your posts. Lighten UP for Gods sake!!!

Also, I never said that Alcoa would lose to either team, but, that it would be a good game, and in my opinion both had enough talent on offense to make a real game of it, no matter what happened in a scrimmage.

Wow Catback , I do believe you need to take your own advice and " Lighten up " a little bit !

Speaking of Cycles , I sure did enjoy that 74 game Cycle :thumb: we just got off of ..... hopefully we can get that " Cycle " fired back up ! :thumb:

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
    • I know most Pirate starters were seniors last year. Im not sure how accurate it is but someone said we only have 3 seniors. That Prep team will probably make some noise this coming season too.
