6A and 5A Champs: Call it now

With Rd. 1 set to kick off tonight, what are you early predictions? I have to say, the two teams that I have watched the most this year are my favorites. Beech is the best team I have watched all season regardless of classification and I think everyone is seriously underestimating Roger Perry and the MJ Bears. The Bears will be on an unstoppable roll after a win over the Pats tonight.

5a - Beech Bucs

6a - Mt. Juliet Golden Bears

In a little over a month, I will respond with my predictions fulfilled.

Don't give me any crap about M'boro schools either. Any of them will be lucky to see the 3rd round.

Would you like a mulligan? :roflol:

Can we give you crap now? Looks like we have a 3/4 chance of advancing to the semifinals once again :hungry: Again, too bad only one of us can. Too bad we have to wait a month for a respnse

Given the craziness of matchups this year, predicitions are a shot in the dark. I was looking at the 6A bracket and noticed it didn't pay to be an odd number seed this year. Only 4 total made it to rd 2. 1-#1 1-#3, 1-#5, 1-#7. Don't follow 5A much at all but I will prediction Henry Co. 6A is full of possibilities. Blackman has had a good run, but playoff inexperience may come back to bite them. I'll go with them from the East on a hunch, and from the West it probably comes down to winner of Brentwood/Franklin, so.... I'll go Brentwood. I don't see how they keep doing it, but Crawford always has them lined up right. Between Brentwood and Blackman, I'll go Brentwood in the rematch. Don't hate, all these are pure speculation.

I think Beech is a very solid team. However, I say if there is ever a year where Henry County should win a state championship, 2009 is the year. We'll see if they can finally get it done after making the semifinals each of the last 3 seasons.

As for 6A, Oakland, Riverdale, Blackman, Franklin, Brentwood are all legitimate contenders for the state championship as well as Maryville no matter what people say. George Quarles is still the head coach. Also, who knows, there might even be a surprise or two out of West TN like Whitehaven or Germantown or White Station.

As for Mount Juliet, they have had a terrific season, but I don't see them beating Oakland in the first round and then Riverdale or Blackman in the quarterfinals AND then a team like Maryville in the semifinals, only to then play a team like Brentwood, Franklin, Germantown, Whitehaven, or White Station in the state championship game. I think that is just probably too much to ask of a program that hasn't been past the 2nd round each of the last 3 seasons.

So, I'll say Oakland wins the 6A state championship even though for some reason I feel like I should being saying Maryville instead. However, the only thing everyone should be able to agree on is whoever wins it all in 6A will likely have had a pretty tough slate of games to play to do it.

Burroball....this hurts me....I thought we had something. I agree with your statement...whoever wins will have a tough road. I'm keeping the 1st weekend in Dec open on my calendar, in case I need to travel to Cookeville. It will be different for sure....change of location and not looking acroos the field at Hillsboro. :D

    • A lot of people don’t realize how valuable JMO was. QB, safety, punter and holder on pat’s. Kid did it all. I fully believe if he was healthy Dburg would have made it to the ship last year.
    • If Dyersburg quarterback who is also starting safety hadn’t got hurt it would of another blowout
    • For perspective the county school I’m associated and graduated from only has 7,600 people in the entire county with a median age of roughly 47. That’s not very many 14-18 year olds to choose from. I think the football team had 25-28 kids or around there.  On the other hand Shelby County has 916,000+ with a median age of 36. This isn’t just about Shelby county, but all the big ones with huge economic advantages!  An urban/rural split would benefit tons of smaller schools that have to compete with counties with 120x the amount of people. Especially the ones who can pick and choose their players from a pool like that!   I also agree with Pujo about charter and magnets and they will eventually be phased into the private divisions because it is obviously an advantage plus all the funding! Add that county schools can’t go recruit outside of their county like charters and magnets!
    • They should be starting next week and go from there.  They never do Spring Practice in April
